"You seem to forget that I’m the deputy mayor of this city. I can – and will – go to Diablo Desert with an army of my own to annihilate your master and all your bandit friends. All of you will die in that scenario. If you defeat us on the ground, I’ll bomb the shit out of you. There is no way for Wolfe to win."

Yunwu (ユンウー, Yunū) is a human living in South City. She is the deputy mayor. Due to the mayor having a nervous breakdown and taking a vacation in Yunzabit Heights with the Negative Utilitarianism League, she became the acting mayor of South City for several months in Age 747. She is a major character in Chasing Oblivion.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

Yunwu is a very tall woman. Her weight is average. She has black hair, brown eyes, and pale skin. She tends to wear black pantsuits; she does not wear any jewelry and applies minimal make-up. She is not the kind of woman to shave her arms and legs. Her nose is rather large, and her eyes are closely-set.

Personality[]

Yunwu is usually emotionally reserved, acting business-like in almost all of her interactions. She is no-nonsense, yet greedy. Oftentimes when negotiating with clients or potential partners, she will ask of them much more than is reasonable, using her position as the deputy mayor (and, in Chasing Oblivion, the acting mayor) to leverage out extra benefits for herself. She has little stamina for such negotiations, however, being able to only put up with a handful every month. However, Yunwu does not let anyone ever see her weary, impatient, or humiliated. When she is angry or embarrassed, she will use all of her resources to punish those who have wronged her. Due to her position, she has a wide variety of resources and allies available to her in any situation, and her awareness and reaction times are elite.

She is a crafty, treacherous beast. As seen in chapter 6, Chasing Oblivion, she sent poisoned victory cigars to Wolfe and his Wings, hoping to murder the leadership of that bandit gang while she was still allied with them, for she wanted to take over the desert for herself. Her ambition is far-reaching, as seen with her purchase of stakes in several companies, such as Tonji Masamune's saké store, Itteki, and Mazuchiru's sushi bar chain, Katachi Saru.

Her only weakness seems to be towards Ren, her young lover. She allows herself to get emotional when it comes to the girl (allowing Wolfe to use Ren as a bargaining chip) and has a blind spot towards her as well (allowing Ren to poison her without Yunwu realizing it).

History[]

Yunwu became deputy mayor of South City eight years prior to the start of Chasing Oblivion. Little, if anything, of her time in office is known except for the fact that life in South City was better before the mayor ran off to Yunzabit Heights, handing reign of the city over to the less-capable Yunwu.

Chasing Oblivion[]

In chapter 1, Yunwu was introduced as the deputy mayor of South City. Early in the chapter, it was revealed that due to the samurai lord Naigo rampaging through South City at the time, Yunwu needed to be escorted to her various meetings for the day by armed guards. Yunwu reflected that she would have to deal with him at some point. She began her day by meeting with many clients, and agreeing to help many of them with their specific requests. Lord Tonji appeared before Lady Yunwu, the deputy mayor of South City, asking her to assist him in recovering his stolen saké and asking her if she had heard any news about his missing nephew (Junichi). While she had not heard anything about Jun, she promised to recover the saké in a week's time for the price of 25% of the haul. It was later revealed that she already had the saké, but was going to try to negotiate with the man again in a week to get a better price.

Then, Mazuchiru met with Yunwu. He demanded she assassinate a certain very important person who was not named in this chapter. When she expressed uncertainty in agreeing to that request, he threatened to reveal her secrets to the mayor, to which she retorted that if he did, she would reveal details of his Yakuza operations to the public. Nevertheless, she eventually agreed to hire a team to assassinate the unnamed individual, so Mazuchiru left. Then, Yunwu met with Makare, whom she described as a rapturous and delusional swordsman. The details of their meeting were not revealed in this chapter. She went on to meet with many more clients, to the point where her head was spinning, and she could no longer keep track of every deal she had made. Finally, Dr. Gero met with Yunwu in order to discuss if she could help him secure an infinite energy device or not. After some discussion, she decided to help him secure such a device.

Afterwards, she returned to her apartment, where she admired her Great Naine banana plant (though it had yet to fruit after several years). One of Yunwu's attendants told her that Naigo had escaped from the police after a brief skirmish. The attendant also told Yunwu that she had thirteen more clients to meet with. But as exhausted as she was, the deputy mayor had no desire to meet with them, instead giving them the first thirteen guaranteed slots for next month's meetings. Then, a small girl appeared before her named Ren. Ren was sent to Yunwu by Wolfe to relay the information about the Night Snakes' plane being shot down. Realizing this would start a gang war, Yunwu became irate at the young girl and burned the message. Ren then politely revealed that she was a present for Yunwu from Wolfe and would stay with the woman for the foreseeable future. She also revealed that Wolfe had found her running in the desert, although the specifics of her origins were not elaborated upon in any more detail. Afterwards, Yunwu retired to her chambers with the girl. Before going to bed, she forced Ren to perform cunnilingus on her.

In chapter 2, Yunwu and Ren visited Wolfe's hideout to discuss the fallout of the news that the Night Snakes' plane was destroyed. Yunwu offered to supply Wolfe with mercenaries and weapons in case a gang war broke out. Wolfe agreed that he needed to gather up an army for the impending war and promised to get her the money soon. Yunwu then told Wolfe that she would need him to lead an assassination mission on King Furry's Captain of the Guard in the House of the Blue Lotus in South City in three days time. When Wolfe questioned her about this, Yunwu stated that she could not go against Mazuchiru yet, as he could reveal her corruption to the mayor. Yunwu then gave Wolfe a gift - a pink capsule filled with tampered explosives. She further goaded the man into leading the assassination mission himself before instructing Ren to stay with Wolfe. Sad as she was to leave the girl, she thought to herself that she had to do that if she was to succeed in her plan of getting rid of both Mazuchiru and Wolfe. Then, Yunwu left.

In chapter 3, Yunwu attempted to hire Mercenary Tao to assassinate Koicharu Mazuchiru, a yakuza boss. When Tao stated his price was 10 billion zeni, she countered with 10 million. Tao then left, as their prices were too far apart to negotiate. Later, she met with Hasky, buying several military-grade weapons from her. Yunwu felt like she did not get a very good price for the weapons, but needed them bad enough to pay what Hasky wanted for them. Then, she hired Hasky to snipe King Furry's Captain of the Guard in case Wolfe's assassination attempt of the man failed. Then, while meeting with the two, Yunwu revealed that she had brokered an alliance between the samurai Makare and Naigo. She wanted their army to fight in the upcoming bandit war in the Diablo Desert, but they refused. When she stated she had saved them from the police, they just laughed at her and left, threatening her in the process. She later sent Captain Fortier and a detachment of guards after the two, ordering them to kill the samurai. However, Fortier and his men were cut down by Makare and Naigo.

She later met with Mazuchiru inside her tower. Mazuchiru asked Yunwu if King Furry's Captain of the Guard had been killed yet. She told him he had not, but that he would be dying later that day. Then, Yunwu requested the services of 500 of his yakuza soldiers for the upcoming bandit war. He agreed, though he showed some surprise that she had soured on Wolfe. She gave him thirty million zeni (taken from Wolfe's stores) to pay for them. Mazuchiru promised his yakuza would help her take over the Diablo Desert in the near future.

After she returned to her apartment, Yunwu's attendants informed her that Ren had not yet returned. Yunwu grew anxious, for Ren did not usually take her time. She thought about how she had sent Ren to pick up some poison from Thoras, one of Wolfe's bandits whom she had introduced to Wolfe many years ago (and thus trusted more than most bandits) and thought to herself that Ren would be returning soon. Yunwu later thought that Wolfe was leading the assassination attempt against King Furry's Captain of the Guard, due to their previous conversation at his hideout, and took solace in the thought that he would soon be dead. Relaxing in her zen garden, she wondered what the mayor would think of her actions. Later on, Wolfe revealed that he had kept some of the explosives Yunwu had given him and intended to use them to destroy the One-Eyed Jackalope's hideout.

In chapter 4, during the yakuza's sushi party, some discussed replacing the mayor of South City with someone they controlled. One many even offered Yunwu as an alternative, but most of the yakuza responded with distaste upon hearing her name.

Later, the mayor had a video call with Yunwu. He asked her how South City was doing. She replied that it was functioning well in her absence. He then told her that he would be coming home soon, although there had been a few complications at Yunzabit Heights that he would need to take care of first. At the conclusion of their conversation, the mayor asked Yunwu to tell Bobo that he would not be long. Yunwu, naturally, had no idea who Bobo was, but it was clear from this statement that the mayor was high on cocaine.

Later on, Yunwu met with Snead in her tower. At first she tried to interrogate him, but when he told her to either set him free or kill him, she agreed to set him free... for a price. The Lady of South City demanded that Ren be returned to her in three days time. She threatened to not only kill Snead, but all of Wolfe's Wings, including Wolfe, if Ren was not returned to her. Snead promised to return the girl, and so he was allowed to leave. Then Yunwu alerted the policemen waiting outside the room that Silver Snead was to be set free. The policemen were shocked, as Snead had already confessed to bombing the House of the Blue Lotus. She swore to them that his confession had just been a mix up, though.

Later, Yunwu called up Thoras to learn about Ren's condition. The man told her that the girl was stable, but that Wolfe had taken her and his most trusted bandits to a different hideout on account of Thoras' poison being stolen. He also revealed that he had given some of his poison to Ren so that the girl could kill Wolfe, but that the rest had been stolen by an unknown force. Thoras was not one of the bandits allowed to go to the new hideout, however. Yunwu was pleased by this nonetheless, thinking that Ren would have an easy opportunity to poison Wolfe at the new hideout. Then Yunwu told Thoras that her plan was to have Mazuchiru's men crush the Night Snakes, allowing Thoras to become her liaison in the Diablo Desert thereafter. While this made Thoras happy, he expressed concern over trusting the yakuza. Yunwu agreed that they could not be trusted, but there was no other way to move forward with her plan to take over Diablo Desert. Yunwu thought to herself that she would not let Wolfe escape with his life for getting Ren shot.

Afterwards, Yunwu's butler escorted her to the yakuza prisoner she was keeping captive in her tower. She noted that of all her attendants, only her butler was allowed to carry a pistol. The rest of her attendants remained in her apartments, making life as easy as possible for her. She had already taken the prisoner's tongue and tortured him severely. She promised to take his eyes if he lied to her again. Then, she asked if Mazuchiru knew where Wolfe got his money from. The prisoner shook his head. She asked if Mazuchiru thought she was a nuisance. He nodded. She asked if Mazuchiru wanted to become mayor. He nodded. She then asked the prisoner how many yakuza served Mazuchiru. He adamantly told her that it was fewer than one thousand. But after Yunwu revealed that she had had Hasky hack into Mazuchiru's computer, thus learning about his wars against the Red Ribbon Army and his excursions to the southeast. This forced the prisoner to admit that Mazuchiru commanded a force of more than one thousand. He then told her that all of Mazuchiru's yakuza not stationed in South City were currently in Orange Star City.

After she was finished interrogating the prisoner, Yunwu asked her butler to get the exact number of yakuza Mazuchiru had control over from the man, as well as information on where they were hiding in Orange Star City. After he did that, he was to kill the prisoner. She thought to herself that while her butler was a capable man, he was nothing compared to Captain Fortier. She cursed the samurai Makare and Naigo for killing him and his men. Yunwu revealed that she knew Makare was now in Orange Star City. She wanted to nuke the entire city to make sure he was killed.

Later, when Yunwu was waiting for Doctor Gero, she thought to herself how she had been teaching Ren poetry and read one of the girl's waka poems. The poem produced an emotional reaction in Yunwu. Then, Yunwu met with Doctor Gero to purchase one of his prototype infinite energy devices. He flirted with her the entire time, but she kept her composure, even promising to go on a date with him in two weeks to keep him placated. She purchased the device for 10 billion zeni. After he gave it to her, Gero warned Yunwu that it would produce a huge explosion if it was hit by an EMP discharge. Yunwu's guards then brought in the 10 billion zeni, and Gero left much richer and much hornier than when he had arrived.

After Yunwu concluded her meeting with Doctor Gero, her butler informed her that he had finished with the prisoner. Telling him she was tired, Yunwu asked the man to fill her in on the details in the morning. He then told her that reporters were at the ground floor of her tower demanding a press conference about the explosion in the House of the Blue Lotus. She refused to go see them, instead sending her butler to face them, ordering the man to tell the reporters that the explosion had been merely an accident and that there were no suspects at present. Then she walked back to her apartment thinking of Ren as she prepared to sleep.

In chapter 5, Silver Snead brought Yunwu's gift of illegal Central City cigars to Wolfe for his gang's success in assassinating King Furry's Captain of the Guard. Every adult bandit proceeded to smoke one cigar, except for Snead, who smoked five. Later, Snead returned Ren to Yunwu. While meeting with Snead, Yunwu assured him that Mazuchiru and his men would arrive in Diablo Desert to strengthen Wolfe's forces the following day. She noticed that he looked sick, and asked him if he was okay, but the man told her he was fine. Since she had been the one to poison the cigars, however, she knew that he was lying about his health.

After Snead left, Yunwu fretted over Ren's wounds, promising to never let her be put in harm's way again. Then, the woman and the girl engaged in certain private activities together. In the morning, Yunwu carried the sleeping girl to her room. After noticing her banana tree's leaves were turning yellow, she asked her attendants if they had been over-watering it. Everyone assured her they had not. Later on, as the banana tree was not getting better, she told her attendants that if the plant died, she would fire all of them.

While she was preparing to start her afternoon meetings, she wondered to herself when the mayor would be coming back, but knew such a question had no answer. Then Yunwu met with Elijah the samurai. He asked her to find out what Makare was doing in Orange Star City in exchange for a 10% stake in Masamune/Masamune. When Yunwu attempted to negotiate for a 20% stake, the samurai offered her 15%, but no more. She continued to negotiate, which Elijah thought was greatly disrespectful, so he got up to leave. Finally, Yunwu relented, and agreed to the 15% stake. Elijah gave her one week to come up with an answer to his question, or their contract would be void. Yunwu was unsure who was the best person to pay for intel on Makare, for she thought to herself that if her plan was successful, the yakuza, the bandits, and all her enemies would be dead by the end of the week.

After Yunwu was finished meeting with several clients, she returned to Ren for a mid-afternoon affair. Afterwards, Yunwu was scheduled to meet with Mazuchiru. When she went to the meeting room, however, she found only a single yakuza holding a mason jar. He apologized for his boss's absence, insisting that Mazuchiru was already on his way to the Diablo Desert, so he didn't have time to meet with her. When Yunwu grew furious at this, he suggested she call Mazuchiru, which Yunwu simply had to laugh at (since Mazuchiru's lines were tapped). He then gave her the mason jar and left. Even after Yunwu saw the black widow spider inside (which she considered to be a threat against her life), she let the man get away, fearing escalating tensions with the yakuza before she could enact her plan to wipe out all of them along with the bandits. Later, While Yamcha and several other bandits were out banditing and waiting for any travelers to appear, a dingo named Bingo speculated that Yunwu was responsible for the chaos and economic downturn in South City and that the yakuza would soon take over. Later on, as he was falling asleep, Nathaniel thought about how much he missed Violet, Yunwu, Tyrian, and Bobo.

In chapter 6, after returning from a bandit raid, Snead confirmed to Wolfe that the yakuza, on Yunwu's behalf, were on their way to aid the Wings. Wolfe mentioned that while he did not trust Yunwu, he trusted the yakuza. Later, as Wolfe looked at Snead's corpse, he realized that Yunwu had poisoned the man. Wolfe silently vowed to kill her for her betrayal.

Some time later, one of Yunwu's attendants told her that Jakuto Masamune, the brother of Tonji Masamune, had stopped by to discuss their business dealings. Then she and her attendant discussed Mazuchiru's loyalties, the latter noting that Hasky was trailing the yakuza. Yunwu ordered her to tell Hasky that she was to get visual confirmation that Mazuchiru and his men were heading to Wolfe's elite hideout. Yunwu noted that because of Mazuchiru's prior threat to her (the spider in the jar), she had placed armed guards around her apartment. She had also ordered policemen to guard the lower levels of her skyscraper.

Soon after, Ren came out of from her bedroom, having just woken up. Yunwu asked her if she wanted tea, but the girl refused. She did, however, agree to have some breakfast, which Yunwu made herself. Another servant poured her another cup of green tea, which she downed immediately. The lady then asked Ren to read off her latest waka. Embarrassed, the girl nonetheless did so. The poem made Yunwu cry and kiss her on the lips in front of everyone.

She met with her guards after breakfast, where they assured her that there were no threats at present. Even so, she kept the skyscraper on lockdown. Then, the deputy mayor received a message from Daniel Parroda, who was her contact in Orange Star City. He told her that Mazuchiru's men had gotten in a huge fight with Makare and Naigo, with the latter two killing all of the Chàoxing Gon in that city. Yunwu ordered him to find a way to weaken Makare and Naigo's forces as well, and Daniel promised to do so before ending their communication.

She then had a video call with the mayor of South City, who told her that he was coming home the next day and that by then, she would need to have dealt with the threat, whatever it was, that was keeping their skyscraper on lockdown. She promised to do so. He then asked her if she had purchased a prototype infinite energy device from Doctor Gero. Yunwu denied having done so, but the mayor knew that Gero had returned to the Red Ribbon Army HQ with one infinite energy device fewer than he had left with. He reminded her of what he had told her during her first day as the deputy mayor - that she would be dispensed with when she became inconvenient to him.

Backed into a corner, Yunwu was forced to admit that she spent ten billion zeni to buy an infinite energy device from Gero. He asked her where she had gotten the money from to make such a purchase, and the woman admitted that she had stakes in Masamune/Masamune's swordsmithing and saké brewing business as well as Mazuchiru's Katachi Saru sushi chain. He seemed satisfied with those answers, but then asked her what she was going to do with Gero's device. Yunwu stated that she had invested in the device to help fund research on the development of nanotechnology in Orange Star City (which was another lie). He demanded to see the device when he returned. Yunwu told him it was in the Diablo Desert, being transported to Orange Star City to be handed over to a researcher in the nanotechnology industry (yet another lie). He forced her to give him the coordinates of the device, so that he could intercept it before it got to Orange Star City. He then ended the communication with her, as he had other matters to attend to.

She vomited on the floor, suddenly feeling ill. Blaming it on her breakfast of octopus and rice, she told a servant that no one was to disturb her unless something serious required her attention. Returning to her room, she crawled into bed and felt like she was going to throw up again. She thought to herself, while in bed, that she should send Hasky after Gero to kill him for ratting her out to the mayor (in actuality, it had been Violet who had done so, not Gero) and not detonate the infinite energy device against the yakuza and bandits who were fighting around Wolfe's elite hideout.

Ren, who was in the room with her writing poetry, retrieved the lady's cell phone for her upon request, but Yunwu was too delirious to text Hasky. She had the girl send a message to Hasky to not use the infinite energy device yet and hold tight. At that moment, Yunwu noticed that Ren wasn't sick, despite eating the same breakfast she had. Yunwu panicked, realizing she had been poisoned. She pleaded with the girl to get help, but Ren simply read another waka from a strip of paper which subtly confirmed to the woman that the girl had poisoned her. Realizing this with horror, Yunwu threw her arm out at Ren, but the girl was too far away to grasp. Yunwu died moments later from the poison.

In chapter 7, as she exited her transport ship, entering Diablo Desert for the first time, Colonel Violet thought to herself that Yunwu had orchestrated a plan to wipe out the bandits throughout the desert, and thus she did not expect to come into contact with any. Using the coordinates Yunwu had sent to the mayor, Violet managed to find Hasky sitting in her hovercar in the middle of the desert, reading a magazine. Later, when Violet confronted Hasky, Hasky remained loyal to Yunwu, not handing over the infinite energy device to the colonel without giving her a fight. When Violet argued with Hasky about who owned the infinite energy device, Violet told the thief that she knew Gero had illegally sold the device to Yunwu. Hasky, for all her worth, didn't care. Then, Hasky got a phone call from one of Yunwu's aides, confirming the deputy mayor's death.

Some time later, Yamcha and Puar returned to South City. There, they heard of the rumor of Yunwu having died. Several days after that, Ren confirmed to Yamcha that Yunwu had died (after having suffered an accident), although he had not known the deputy mayor. Afterwards, when the mayor of South City and Violet reunited, the latter told the former that Yunwu had died, which brought about an emotional response from the mayor. When he walked through Bonetown, the mayor thought about how Mazuchiru had rid the desert of bandits on Yunwu's orders, and how cruel fate had been to take the woman from the world before she had gotten to see her plan realized. Some time later, when Mazuchiru met with Violet, the former told the latter of Yunwu's death, though the latter barely feigned sympathy. He asked her who the mayor would replace her with, but Violet refused to give him a definitive answer. He also told her that Yunwu had promised him Diablo Desert, but Violet was not in a position to actually do that.

In chapter 8, after Hasky stole the infinite energy device back from Colonel Violet, she wondered to herself if her new client was planning on detonating the infinite energy device over a large group of people like her previous client had.

Trivia[]

  • It is never revealed in Chasing Oblivion if Yunwu is actually a lesbian, or merely bisexual, due to her relationship with Ren (as Ren was not biologically female).
