Tonji Masamune (正宗まさむね• とんじ , Masamune Tonji) is a Human featured in Nineteen Assassins. He's the co-founder of Masamune/Masamune, along with his brother Jakuto, running the saké brewing and selling half of the company. He's featured as a minor character in Chasing Oblivion and Nineteen Assassins.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

Tonji is an older man, slightly hunched-over in stature with a modest gut. He's balding, sports a bushy mustache, and has dark eyes. Tonji wears a white-and-black uniform with his company's logo above his heart. While he looks fairly old, wrinkled and covered in age spots, he's spry for his age.

Personality[]

Tonji is a kindhearted, gentle man. He loves to joke around and is not nearly as reserved as his brother. He's very laid back, though that's not to say he's unprofessional. He displays a quick wit and has high awareness. Tonji is a great negotiator and tailors his personality to those he is talking to at the moment. He has an infectiously cheerful persona making him quite charismatic. He knows how to make a deal.

History[]

Chasing Oblivion[]

In chapter 1, it was revealed that Lord Tonji was a man who owned a renowned saké brewery. A hovervan of his saké was attacked by Junichi, Lychrel, and Yamcha, and its contents were stolen by the three (though the saké was later taken by Wolfe and his Wings). Junichi revealed that he was the nephew of Tonji, which explained how he knew the saké delivery routes. Later in the chapter, Lord Tonji himself appeared before Lady Yunwu, the deputy mayor of South City, asking her to assist him in recovering his stolen saké and asking her if she had heard any news about his missing nephew (Junichi). While she had not heard anything about Jun, she promised to recover the saké in a week's time for the price of 25% of the haul. It was later revealed that she already had the saké, but was going to try to negotiate with the man again in a week to get a better price.

In chapter 6, when Yunwu heard from one of her attendants that Mr. Masamune had stopped by, she mistakenly believed it had been Tonji, not his brother Jakuto.

During chapter 7, Yamcha noticed that there were posters asking for information about Junichi's whereabouts posted throughout South City. Feeling guilty, he visited Itteki, the saké store owned by Tonji Masamune. Without giving the secretary his name, he told her what had happened to Jun. She promised to inform Tonji about his nephew's death.

In chapter 8, while Yamcha and Puar were banditing (by baiting drivers with a 'Free Lemonade' stand), a man hauling saké for Masamune/Masamune stopped for a glass of free lemonade. Yamcha was going to rob him until the man revealed where he worked. Upon hearing that he was one of Tonji Masamune's employees, Yamcha let him go on his way.

Nineteen Assassins[]

In the second scene of chapter 5, Tien and Paik visited the Masamune/Masamune estate in Cardan. At the door, they were greeted by Elijah. When they showed him the katana and said they were going to use it to pay for a hit on Hiramogi Higataro, he brought them inside and went to get Mr. Masamune.

A moment later, a man poked his head out of the door Elijah had disappeared into, ushering them to join him. They joined Elijah in a room where Mr. Masamune poured everyone tea. He introduced himself as Tonji Masamune. He was confused about the bounty on Higataro, as he hadn't ordered. Paik explained that someone else had placed it and had given them the katana as payment. Elijah requested to inspect the katana. Paik gave it to him. He read the name on its hilt: Harotu. The Cranes didn't know what that meant. Elijah offered to pay the Ƶ10,000,000 asking price, but would only do so after proof of Higataro's death was shown to him. The Cranes planned to let him keep the blade in the estate while they performed the hit.

They wanted to know the best way to attack Higataro. Elijah revealed that there had been a war between the samurai and yakuza years back, so he knew what to do. He hoped Higataro's death would destabilize the yakuza in the region, who had been hunting samurai down over the past years. Elijah told them the blade they had given him had belonged to one of his students. Back in those time, a rival samurai faction had attacked Elijah's school. After Elijah had prevailed, he had tried to save as many of the surviving samurai and bring them over to his side, though the yakuza had made that difficult by murdering many of them. In present times, only a few dozen remained.

Tien was resolved to kill the yakuza, which Elijah appreciated, though he noted it would not be easy. Higataro had many bodyguards. Paik promised they were up for the task. Elijah told them they could hide in one of Tonji's shipping trucks. It was scheduled to visit Higataro's house two days from then to deliver a shipment of Junmai Genshu sake. There would be fewer yakuza in Higataro's house than at the Goldfish Casino. Elijah promised to text them the address to meet up with the truck. Tonji gave a toast, praying the Cranes would be successful in their mission. The Cranes got to their feet and left, Tien's body thrumming with anticipation. In the seventh scene, the Cranes returned to Cardan at around two in the morning. They received a bag of money from Lord Tonji and an assistant. Tien thanked them for the money before the group departed.

Trivia[]

  • Tonji's page was created in 2024, seven years after his appearance in Chasing Oblivion, making him the character who had the longest wait for a page in the story. He is also the last character in that story to receive a page.
