The Keeper (ザ キーパー, Za Kīpā) is an Agent of Destruction in Universe 12. Residing on Sovam, he is the eternal guardian of one half of the Heart of the Dragon. He is the protagonist of Lights of Zalama and is a secondary character in Dragon Ball: Heart of the Dragon
Overview[]
Appearance[]
At over six meters in height, the Keeper is one of the tallest warriors in the series. He has tan body armor and pale blue skin. He is hairless, and his ears are extremely long and scythe-shaped. His eyes are dark orange. The outfit he wears is silvery-black. His aura is blood orange.
Personality[]
The Keeper is a confident warrior who takes his job extremely seriously. He is aggressive, resolute, and resourceful. He will do whatever it takes to protect the Heart of the Dragon. His style is more abrasive than Universe 1's Keeper. He will consider the mere presence of any individual on Sovam as in and of itself a challenge for the artifact. He does not have much contact with other beings, so he is somewhat awkward and rude in conversations. He is overly trusting of Dr. Kommon due to their friendship spanning many years. While he was not supposed to use Energy of Destruction during the events of Lights of Zalama, he did and lied about that to Geene, indicating that the Keeper has a slightly different code of ethics than his lord would expect.
History[]
Lights of Zalama[]
In the first scene of this story, the Keeper awoke and looked out over the dunes of Sovam. He thought to himself that there was nothing on this planet save for an artifact crafted by Zalama and the spire he had crafted to contain it. The Keeper had been awakened by the power signatures of the Atatu people in the lower chamber.
He guarded one half of the Heart of the Dragon, while the Keeper in Universe 1 guarded the other half. It was their duty to protect the artifacts from intruders, though if anyone challenged them to a fight to the death for the artifact, the Keepers were obliged to honor the request. If someone gathered both halves of the Heart of the Dragon, they would be able to turn back time. Although time manipulation was a taboo, Zalama ranked over the Angels, so whatever he wanted to do was allowed.
He jumped into the gravity lift and moved to the bottom floor of the spire. There, he met with the Atatu people. There were many of them, and they pushed and shoved him when he reached them. The Keeper warned them that he would take them all on at once if they continued to do that. However, the insects had only been curious about him, and after a few moments, they returned to the space leading up to the gravity lift.
Excess golden energy from the Heart of the Dragon leaked down the lift, and they were feasting on it. They climbed over one another to get a taste, fighting amongst themselves for the best spots. Revulsed, the Keeper unleashed an acidic yellow wave of energy that vaporized a large portion of them. At that moment, he was telepathically contacted by one of the Atatu queens. She asked him to stop killing her people and explained that they meant him no harm. They had been drawn to the planet by the Heart of the Dragon's energy signature. It reminded them of the power signature of their savior, a warrior who had protected their species during the time of the twelfth dynasty. The current dynasty was the three hundred ninety-third.
The Keeper was unmoved. He asked them if they wanted the artifact. While they admitted that it seemed to contain some trace of their savior's energy, they did not wish to fight him for it. At that moment, the golden light vanished. The Atatu gasped. The Keeper realized someone had taken the artifact. He told the Atatu that if they were still there when he returned, he would take that as a sign that they wanted to challenge him for the artifact, and he would battle them to the death. He returned up the gravity lift, sensing eight beings up there, and remembered that he had a duty to Zalama, Geene, and the universe to do his duty.
In the second scene, as he returned to the top of the spire, the Keeper thought to himself that Dr. Kommon had never missed his drop-off dates before. He would send the Keeper eight inmates on death row once per month, but that was not supposed to be for another two days. He sensed eight beings originally, but by the time he reached the room, the Keeper noticed only seven. One lay on the floor with a burnt hand. Three others were surrounding the one who held the Heart of the Dragon. Two more guarded a hole in the wall, which was where the thieves had come from.
The man holding the Heart of the Dragon, Tarvesh, wasn't sure if he should eat the thing. The eighth convict appeared behind the Keeper. He was trying to sneak up on him. The Keeper elbowed him to the floor, then stomped his back until his spine shattered, killing him. The Keeper asked the other convicts if the doctor had sent them. A woman named Helian admitted as much, though Guwanu, her companion, became furious with her for saying that. She told the Keeper that Kommon had ordered them to steal the Heart of the Dragon. She said that with the hopes of the Keeper sparing her. The agent of destruction told them that once a month, Dr. Kommon brought him eight criminals on death row from the Galactic Prison whose execution dates were scheduled for that very day. He told them that they were two days early (he'd have to talk to Kommon about that).
They weren't supposed to have touched the Heart of the Dragon. That they had meant he could not spare them under any circumstances. They were confused and didn't want to fight him, but he said that a fight would be inevitable, so they'd have a better chance of surviving if they defended themselves. He stomped on the man on the ground who had burnt his hand, noting that there were now six of them. He promised to take all of them on at once. The convicts murmured amongst each other.
The Keeper fell into a fighting stance, then released cyclone energy upon the two guards at the hole in the wall. His energy cut them to pieces, leaving behind piles of gore. Guwanu pleaded with Tarvesh to swallow the Heart of the Dragon. Since Kommon had already lied to the convicts about the spire being their ticket to freedom, Tarvesh no longer trusted the doctor telling him to swallow the artifact to use it. Guwanu slapped Tarvesh, knocking the artifact out of his grasp. Helian and the last convict charged the Keeper and coated him in a boiling cloud of plasma. However, those attacks did not hurt him in the slightest. He released a pulse of Energy of Destruction, which vaporized both of them.
Next, he rushed Guwanu, who held the artifact. He slammed her head into the floor while cooking her with his ki-covered hand. She screamed for Tarvesh to do something. At once the Keeper felt something poke him in the heel, and then his body locked up and he fell over. Tarvesh began to laugh. He told the Keeper that he had used Syaneaus venom from the Atatu tribe to paralyze him. He also noted that the Keeper had killed Guwanu before collapsing, which Tarvesh liked as well.
He took the Heart of the Dragon from her remains and wiped the blood off it. He told the Keeper that he knew he wouldn't be able to outrun him, as the venom would lose its potency in ten minutes. He would kill the Keeper with the artifact. Tarvesh noted that Kommon had lied to him, so he would pay the doctor a visit afterwards. He condemned the Keeper to death, then swallowed the Heart of the Dragon. The venom's potency had begun to drop, so the Keeper was able to crawl over to him, though he was in immense pain. Tarvesh was happy to see this, as now he'd be able to hear the Keeper's screams of pain.
The Keeper asked him if he had already been divine before swallowing the artifact. Tarvesh had not been. He told the Keeper that one only becomes divine after acquiring the artifacts, not before. He raised a fist, with swirling energy forming before it, and marched at his foe. Just then, his head exploded. Because Tarvesh had not possessed god ki before swallowing the Heart of the Dragon, he had been unable to use it.
The Keeper used telekinesis to rip the artifact from his chest cavity. He purified it in energy, then returned it to its rightful place near the center of the room. He collapsed in pain and wondered what to do about the Atatu. Knowing that they had been used unfairly by the convicts, he decided to spare them. He was unsure what to do with Kommon, though. He decided to think that over after the pain subsided. Around nightfall, the Keeper noticed that most of the pain from the venom was gone.
In the third scene, the Custodian began rebuilding the spire. Some time later, Geene and Martinu arrived on Sovam. The God of Destruction said that Agu, the Supreme Kai of Universe 12, had sensed high power levels on Sovam. Geene was relieved that the Keeper had done his duty to protect the artifact.
The Keeper told him about the Atatu tribe, and how they had only been drawn in by Zalama's energy. Geene was surprised to learn that the Keeper hadn't killed them. The Keeper admitted that he would let them return once a year. He said that since the bottom level of the spire was so spacious, it could be wise to encourage tourism for the monetary benefits. Geene said he would consider it when next he came to Sovam (roughly seven months later) to train the Keeper in controlling Energy of Destruction.
He asked the warrior if he had used any of that energy yet. The Keeper lied, saying he hadn't. Geene ordered him not to use it on anyone until they trained with the technique. The Keeper promised he would not. Geene and Martinu left him, and he returned to his meditation pad and awaited the next warrior to challenge him in combat for the Heart of the Dragon.
