Master Roshi Versus Master Shen is part of Scorpionic's Battle Series. Roshi, sometime before the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, faces off against his rival Shen in an image training session.
Master Roshi Versus Master Shen[]
Roshi grew bored on his island sometime after Goku defeated Piccolo Junior at the 23rd Tournament. He decided that he would try to stay in shape. After all, Roshi had not trained much since the 22nd tournament. Krillin was around as a training partner, though Roshi also liked to train on his own. He wondered what had become of his rival, Shen, and his brother Tao. Roshi had a perfect idea. He would do image training!
Roshi sat down near the waves on the island and acted as if he was meditating. He was training by visualizing battles in his mind. In his mind, Roshi envisioned his current self meeting Shen during the 22nd Tournament. However, they were not in the tournament arena. Roshi faced Shen in an area that looked to be somewhere on Papaya Island, where the tournament was held. They confronted each other in a tropical cliffy area near a shore.
Roshi wore his Jackie Chun outfit, though he was wearing his trademark sunglasses and no wig. Shen wore his usual crane hat and Crane School outfit, which Roshi thought was ridiculous. They stood a distance across from each other, like a Wild West showdown.
Shen chuckled to himself. “So we meet again, Turtle. You have no idea what I am capable of.”
“It has been too long since we fought like this, my old friend. It saddens me that you decided to use your power for evil. What would our master think?”
“Enough!”
Shen charged at Roshi, launching a flurry of rapid punches at him. But Roshi was fast and easily dodged Shen’s punches.
“Your speed has improved, Shen. But you’re still slow!”
Roshi punched the air with such force that Shen was knocked back by a gust of wind. Shen then jumped behind Roshi. Shen punched Roshi, but the latter quickly countered with a karate chop to Shen’s wrist. Roshi then turned and attempted to kick Shen but he missed. Shen had used the Afterimage Technique to evade Roshi’s attack.
Shen smirked. “Did you really think I was going all out? I am not even serious.”
“And neither am I.”
Shen moved into a fighting stance and appeared to power up, though he produced no aura. He slightly buffed up, just as Roshi had done against Tien in the 22nd Tournament. In what seemed like a split second, Shen dashed in front of Roshi and elbowed him in the face. Roshi was sent sprawling backwards by the fast and powerful attack, which knocked his sunglasses off.
Roshi jumped away to avoid one of Shen’s punches. He landed on top of a cliff and decided that he too would get serious. He clenched his fists and slightly buffed up, just as Shen had done. Roshi then jumped down to kick Shen in the chest but the latter countered by kicking Roshi in the face. The impact of both attacks sent both of them flying back. Roshi landed in a cliff, which caved in. Shen landed in the ocean.
Roshi emerged from fallen rocks as if nothing had happened. Shen slowly got back on his feet.
Shen chuckled. “Ha ha ha! Try this on for size!”
Shen produced a dazzling light with the Solar Flare technique. Roshi was blinded since he did not have his sunglasses. Shen rushed towards the blinded Roshi and punched him. However, just as Shen threw the punch, Roshi was able to use his own momentum against him. Roshi grabbed Shen’s arm and threw him into the air. Shen stopped falling and began floating by using ki to fly.
“Oh. That’s right. You can’t fly.”
Roshi could not fly. But he had superior speed and strength.
“I may not be able to fly. But I have the advantage.”
“Is that so? You’re no match for my Dodon Ray!”
Roshi opened his eyes. He was able to see again, as the effects of the Solar Flare wore off. “You underestimate the Kamehameha.”
Shen charged a Dodon Ray from the air while Roshi charged a Kamehameha below.
“KA...ME...HA...ME..”
“Dodon Ray!”
“HAAAAA!!!”
Shen fired a yellow blast from his right index finger, which countered Roshi’s Kamehameha. The Dodon Ray clashed with the Kamehameha. Shen’s Dodon Ray began pushing back Roshi’s blast. “Did you really think your puny Kamehameha would be enough?”
Roshi struggled. He moved forward as if he was pushing his Kamehameha like a boulder. However, Shen’s Dodon Ray pushed Roshi’s Kamehameha back. Roshi was engulfed in an explosion of golden light. There was a crater on the beach.
Roshi was standing in a crater. His hands were still motioned as if he had fired a Kamehameha. Smoke was coming from him as if he had been burned. Roshi’s clothing was tattered. He panted and weakly stood up.
Shen flew back to the ground and walked near Roshi.
“Is that the best you can do?”
Roshi tore off his tattered shirt.
“You of all people should know that I have other moves up my sleeve. ELECTRIC SHOCK SURPRISE!”
Roshi zapped lightning from his fingertips at Shen, who had arrogantly let his guard down. Shen struggled and was engulfed in a field of lightning.
“AGHHH….I...I FORGOT ABOUT THIS...TECHNIQUE!”
Roshi continued to zap more lightning into Shen, who was increasingly weakened.
“Give up, Shen.”
“No…..NEVER!”
A capsule fell out of Shen’s pocket. A magazine was released from the capsule.
Roshi glanced at the magazine. “Ho ho! My favorite!”
Roshi, distracted by the magazine, released Shen from the Electric Shock Surprise. Shen fell on the ground with smoke coming from him as if he had been scorched. He slowly got back on his feet and threw off his jacket.
“You haven’t changed, Turtle.”
“Huh?”
Roshi was looking at a magazine. He turned around to see Shen and was punched in the face. Roshi staggered backwards and dropped the magazine.
“Still up to your old tricks, Shen.”
Shen moved his arms rapidly and seemed to create After Images of himself. He rushed towards Roshi and attacked him with a series of rapid punches and kicks. However, Roshi saw through his technique and caught both of his fists. He then slammed his head into Shen’s head, knocking the old hermit’s sunglasses off and giving him a bruise. Shen broke from Roshi’s hold by kicking him in the face and knocking him into the air. Roshi landed in the sand some distance away. He rose to his feet and brushed off sand.
Roshi began moving his arms and uttering “sleepy...sleepy..sleepy.”
“I won’t fall for that trick.”
Shen closed his eyes to avoid Roshi’s hypnosis. He then rushed to the old man and roundhouse kicked him. But Shen had struck an After Image. He opened his eyes. Roshi appeared behind Shen and karate chopped him, though he countered with a karate chop of his own. Shen then backflipped away and flew into the air.
Shen chuckled to himself and motioned his hands as if he were about to fire a Tri-Beam.
“Hehe. You can’t escape this one.”
Roshi was shocked.
“No. You wouldn’t!”
“TRI...BEAM...HAAAAAAA!!!”
Shen fired a Tri-Beam below, which resulted in a deep crater below. The ground shook. Water from the ocean flooded into the crater.
Shen laughed. “It’s over! I win!”
Shen’s feeling of victory was replaced with shock when he turned to see Roshi clinging onto a tree behind him. The tree was near the edge of a cliff. Roshi comically let go of the tree and landed below with a thud.
“How...how did he escape from my Tri-Beam?!”
Roshi weakly rose back to his feet. “I’ll go all out now.” Roshi got into a stance, clenched his fists, and bulked up more. He was now in his Max Power state.
“How do you expect to hit me in that state?”
Roshi readied his hands for a Kamehameha Wave.
“KA...ME….HA…”
Shen continued to levitate in the air. He rushed to prepare a Dodon Ray while watching Roshi below.
“ME…”
“DODON RAY!”
“HAAAAA!!!”
Roshi’s Max Power Kamehameha clashed with Shen’s Dodon Ray. Shen underestimated Roshi. The Dodon Ray was pushed back.
“No...it can’t be...the Dodon Ray is superior!”
“Not to my Max Power Kamehameha!”
Shen attempted to push back the Max Power Kamehameha by firing more ki into his Dodon Ray. But it was no use. The Max Power Kamehameha continued to push back the Dodon Ray. Shen was blasted with the power of the Kamehameha and sent into the upper atmosphere.
Roshi’s image training ended there. He had won. He opened his eyes to find himself sitting on his island. The Crane Hermit’s techniques were not superior to Roshi’s after all.
