Gokushenron Article of the Month Award

This page, Saiyans (KidVegeta & Hyper Zergling), was the Article of the Month for July 2017! Congratulations!

Main article: [[Saiyans]]

This article will serve as a clarification for KidVegeta's and Hyper Zergling's universes. Being that the Saiyan history, transformations, survivors, and even battle multipliers vary and wildly contradict one another within the Dragon Ball universe, we need to firmly establish which side of each inconsistency we are on. Doing this will allow us to maintain respect of the existing Dragon Ball canon and remove problems that exist in the current universe. As such, this article will not list all of the attributes of the Saiyan species, but mainly those which need clarification. We will mainly follow manga canon, when possible. Anime canon will also be followed when possible. The history of the Saiyans established in GT, which contradicts the manga and anime versions of the Saiyan history found in Dragon Ball Z will be almost completely ignored.

History[]

The Saiyans were a species native to Planet Vegeta. They genetically diverged from another species, the Tuffles around 250,000 years before Goku's birth. The two species were closely related (with only around a 0.19% genetic difference), descending from a single, common ancestor. The Saiyans, being the stronger and larger of the two species, hunted primitive Tuffles for food and sport. Within a few thousand years, the two species had dispersed across the planet's continents. The Tuffle population remained relatively small during this period, as the Saiyans out-competed their smaller brethren and drove many of their populations into extinction. As such, the Saiyan numbers grew larger as time went on.

As the Saiyans quickly became apex predators, the only real population-control they had was war. Such actions were common with the primitive Saiyans. Often times, rival tribes would fight and completely wipe each other out. Additionally, every eight years, there was a full moon on the planet, causing all of the Saiyans to become Great Apes. Since none of them could control themselves in the form, there was often widespread destruction and death during each of those full moons.

Within 30,000 years of their emergence, the Saiyans had developed advanced societies, language, and technology. They had settled most of their planet by that point, and their numbers swelled to the billions. The Tuffles were still around, often living on the edge of society and sight in caves and island communities. The Saiyans would still hunt them for sport, but they did not actively seek to exterminate the species. Around 200,000 years before Goku's birth, the Saiyans became space-faring and start venturing out to various planets. The first Legendary Super Saiyan emerged during this time, and he became a violent and brutal warlord, conquering entire planets and peoples whenever he wanted. The first Legendary Super Saiyan started a dynasty of Saiyan kings which ruled the Saiyan intergalactic empire up until the appearance of the second Legendary Super Saiyan. When that Saiyan appeared, he destroyed the previous ruling family and became an even harsher ruler, often opting to destroy planets instead of annexing them.

As the Saiyan empire became more and more vast, enslaved races and planets were relied upon to produce enough food and supplies to maintain the might of the empire. With the second Legendary Super Saiyan destroying many of these planets, the Saiyan economy was crippled, and their populations dropped sharply. Several races rose up against the Saiyans, and with the mighty warrior race living off of so few supplies, they were unable to stop any of the rebellions. Within a few years, the Saiyans had lost most of their expanded galactic empire.

With the coming of the third Legendary Super Saiyan over 1000 years later, the Saiyan empire was quickly restored and expanded upon. At its height, the Saiyans controlled over half of the known universe. There were tens of billions of Saiyans alone, and many of them operated military outposts on slave-planets. Soon, the populations of Saiyans on other planets exceeded those on their homeworld. The Saiyans employed various slave races to design their advanced metropolitan cities and space ships as time wore on.

Over the next 200,000 years, the Saiyan empire survived. Though it often times waned in power and size (usually during a time without a Legendary Super Saiyan), sometimes reducing the Saiyans to nothing more than a few bands of roaming space pirates, the Saiyan empire maintained a presence throughout the years. A Legendary Super Saiyan appeared roughly every 1000 years, though sometimes one would not appear for as long as 5000 to 10,000 years. The reasons for this were numerous: sometimes, the prospective Legendary Super Saiyan would be killed in childhood or adolescence before he or she could be identified; sometimes they never unlocked their potential; and sometimes, they only appeared in remote regions of the empire and, thus, went mostly unnoticed. Most Legendary Super Saiyans were males, though at least 15% of them were females. Additionally 75% of the Legendary Super Saiyans could only attain their Legendary Super Saiyan form in their Great Ape state. Those 25% who could control the transformation in their normal state (such as the first three Legendary Super Saiyans) were much more powerful than normal, and they often appeared at times where the Saiyan galactic empire expanded greatly (though not always, as seen with the second Legendary Super Saiyan).

A little more than 1000 years before the birth of Goku, the last Legendary Super Saiyan of the Saiyan empire appeared. This Super Saiyan was a female, and she emerged right when several coalitions of slave races formed and began to challenge the Saiyan stranglehold on their homeworlds. As this Super Saiyan was able to control herself in her Great Ape form (a rare trait), she was also able to become a Super Saiyan in her standard form. But since she was a female, she was not supported by many of the Saiyans, who saw males as the superior gender. Many Saiyans tried to kill her or sent assassins against her. As such, she had only a small force to help her subdue the various rebellions in the vast Saiyan empire. She deposed of the last Saiyan king and set up herself as the ruler of the empire. Again, since she was a woman, this did little. Most of her people rejected her rule and tried to reinstate the bloodkin of the previous king. The Legendary Super Saiyan opposed this and started waging war against her Saiyan enemies as well as her non-Saiyan enemies. This two-pronged war, however, led to disaster.

Many rebellions were subdued. The Legendary Super Saiyan was strong enough on her own to crush entire armies. However, adding in the numerous Saiyans who wanted to overthrow her, the Legendary Super Saiyan wasn't able to spend all of her time maintaining the empire. A large Saiyan force eventually cornered her on a far-distant outpost of her empire. The entire army could not subdue her, but they did exile her there. They destroyed all of the space ships before she could kill them. After she was completely trapped, with no communication with the outside world, the Legendary Super Saiyan committed suicide by destroying the planet.

Seeing the Legendary Super Saiyan dead and a large portion of the Saiyan army gone with her, the slave races united together, rising up and swiftly crushing the remaining remnants of the Saiyan empire. All of the then-appointed Saiyan kings and leaders were too weak or too uninterested in continuing their empire to stop the collective armies of once-kept slaves from ravaging it.

By around 600 years before Goku's birth, the Saiyan empire was virtually destroyed. Almost all military outposts were wiped out, and most off-planet populations of the Saiyans had been killed. The Saiyans held one victory even in their massive defeat - they concealed their homeworld from all of their slave races. None of them knew where the major body of the Saiyans resided, and indeed, even through their various searches, they were unable to find it.

The Saiyans retreated to their homeworld, where they devolved rather quickly. Without vast resources and wealth coming in from other planets, the Saiyans weren't able to live in rich, opulent lifestyles in metropolitan cities. Their destructive nature soon caused them to destroy their cities. As only a small part of the Saiyan empire had resided on their homeworld (or retreated back to it) when their slave-races rebelled, their populations were quite low. It is estimated less than 2 billion Saiyans were living on the planet at that time. And once they were confined to a single planet again, the Saiyans quickly warred one another to death.

By 500 years before Goku's birth, their populations had been reduced to around 200,000,000. The frequent full moons also contributed to the Saiyan populations swiftly decreasing.

All throughout this time, the Saiyans had neglected the other sentient species on their homeworld - the Tuffles. Indeed, as the Saiyans had been out conquering the stars, the Tuffles had been quietly living in the shadows and in far-off places on Planet Vegeta. They watched as the Saiyans returned to their homeworld, defeated and full of blood-lust. They watched as the Saiyans reduced their own populations and advanced societies from constant in-fighting and wars.

Then, the Tuffles came out in force, around 450 years before Goku's birth. Mentally, they had evolved rather quickly - soon, they mastered technology and society, and all of the large cities on the planet were theirs. They developed advanced weaponry, which allowed them to combat the Saiyans. Soon, they had carved a path through the planet, eliminating all Saiyans who stood in their way and creating many large cities. This caused the Saiyans to flee to the badlands, forcing them to live in harsh, desert environments. There, the once-proud Saiyan warriors were reduced to primitive tribal animals once more.

Off-planet, the remaining Saiyan populations were completely eradicated by the 200 Age. While small groups had survived the uprisings against their empire, they could not hold out forever. The Saiyans were seen as deplorable, violent animals, and as such, none of the previous slave-races could let even one of them survive. The last siege involved over 10,000 aliens and around 200 Saiyans. The Saiyans were completely massacred in that battle. The aliens thought the Saiyans had been rendered extinct after that.

The Tuffles continued their expansion for the next 430 or so years. Infrequent skirmishes between them and the Saiyans continued throughout that time, though none of the battles resulted in significant defeats for either side The Saiyans continued their infighting during this time and, combining this with the Saiyans' poor living conditions, lack of food and water, and inability to fight the once-weak Tuffles, their populations dropped severely. By around the 650 Age, there were only a few million Saiyans left. Notably, it was around that time when the Tuffles put up projection shields to prevent the moons of the planet from ever being seen again. This prevented any future Great Ape transformations, which were the only major threat to the Tuffles at that time.

The Saiyans were mostly situated in large tribal regions at this time. These were like small kingdoms, where a tribal lord (like a primitive king) controlled the lands of many smaller tribes. By the 720 Age, on the eve of the Saiyan-Tuffle War, there were seven great tribes, and these are described in the below section. The seven tribes were united by a brilliant, cunning Saiyan named Vegeta. Vegeta soon became a king of his reunited race and then swore to eliminate the Tuffles for forcing the Saiyans to live in such terrible conditions. Along with several other skilled fighters, Vegeta tore a swath through the Tuffles. However, their small numbers prevented them from tackling the larger Tuffle forces. Eventually, Vegeta found that the Tuffles were concealing the moons of Vegeta. He destroyed the projection shields just as a full moon occurred, causing all of the Saiyan soldiers to transform into Great Apes. As Great Apes, the Saiyans swiftly killed off the Tuffles and won the war. Their war had lasted 10 years, but once the Saiyans became Great Apes, they won it in but a single night.

With the Tuffles exterminated, the Saiyans moved into their cities, made Vegeta their king, and named their planet "Vegeta". King Vegeta then took a queen and prepared to produce an offspring. Speculation arose that his son would be the next Legendary Super Saiyan. It was at this time that a race known as the Arcosians came to Planet Vegeta and met with the Saiyans.

The Arcosians asked for the Saiyans' help in conquering a new planet for them to live on. King Vegeta agreed. Once his soldiers had cleared a new planet for the Arcosians, Vegeta was met by a creature named Frieza. Frieza told Vegeta about the Planet Trade Organization. Vegeta was forced to swear allegiance to Frieza and the organization lest he be killed. Soon afterwards, King Vegeta had two sons, Prince Vegeta and Tarble.

Then, the Saiyans began conquering planets for the Planet Trade Organization to be resold on the galactic market. Many Saiyan babies were sent to far-off worlds to conquer them when they grew up. Prince Vegeta in particular impressed Frieza with his strength and abilities to clear planets so quickly. When Frieza approached King Vegeta and told him that he wanted to take the king's son in as a pupil of his own, however, King Vegeta became irate. He quickly organized a rebellion. With his greatest soldiers, the King marched on Frieza's ship. However, the good king and his men were then swiftly killed by Frieza. Frieza, fearing more rebellions (and the Super Saiyan Legend), then destroyed Planet Vegeta and most of the Saiyans. He sent out strike teams to kill most of the other remaining Saiyans, though he missed several of them.

Frieza allowed Prince Vegeta to survive because he saw potential in the boy. Nappa, who was Vegeta's training instructor, was allowed to survive as well. Vegeta's brother, Tarble, also survived because he had been sent off of Planet Vegeta. Zarbon sent teams around the universe to find and kill Tarble, but the young prince was never found. Ironically, a planet Vegeta and another alien were sent to in order to clear was the planet Tarble was sent to. After realizing Tarble was on the planet, Vegeta killed his alien companion to prevent him from telling Zarbon and left. Zarbon never learned the truth. Raditz survived because he had been thought to be dead, but was accidentally found by Prince Vegeta and Nappa shortly after the destruction of their homeworld. Several other Saiyans survived as well. One named Ledas survived by accidentally crash-landing on a planet owned by Frieza's brother, Cooler, who didn't care about killing the Saiyans. Others, like Cuber, Chaiva, Speonitch, and Kailon escaped the destruction of their race by evading Zarbon's personal strike team for many years. Of note is that of the 10 Saiyans who survived the Genocide of the Saiyans, only one was a female. Thus, maintaining a pure-blood breeding population was almost impossible at this point.

Over the next few years, the few remaining full-blooded Saiyans continued to survived, either on their own, or as a part of the Planet Trade Organization. In fact, many of them converged on Earth, where they either joined the Z Fighters or were killed. After the events of Dragon Ball Z, however, only a few of the remaining Saiyans were still alive: Goku, Vegeta, Tarble, Ledas, and Cuber. All of these Saiyans were males, of course, so the Saiyan population was, at that time, effectively extinct. While interbreeding with other races, such as humankind, was possible, by this point, no more full-blooded Saiyans could be born into the world.

Saiyan-human hybrids survived on Earth for at least several hundred years after the end of Dragon Ball Z. It is expected that the Saiyan traits will either become so diluted or those few hybrids will die out within 1000 years of the end of Dragon Ball Z, effectively causing the distinctive aspects of the Saiyans (the monkey tail and abilities to transform into a Great Ape and Super Saiyan) to disappear from the universe. Goku and Ledas had their lifespans unnaturally altered, and both of them should survive hundreds of years longer than possible. Indeed, Goku could survive for thousands of years, as he took the life of a Supreme Kai. Goku surely will be the last full-blooded Saiyan, and he may be the last being to carry Saiyan genes in the universe.

Tribes[]

Before King Vegeta unified his race in order to combat the Tuffles and take over the planet, the Saiyans were a primitive, nomadic people. There were seven large tribes, headed by a single leader each, which populated the planet. Most of the tribes did not get along, instead spending the majority of their time warring with one another. The seven tribes are listed in order of power. For example, Zhukin's tribe had the most Saiyans, resources, and land. Creissa's had the least amount of Saiyans. Considering that Vegeta led a tribe that was in the middle, in terms of soldiers and resources, it is quite extraordinary that he managed to overpower the other 6 tribes and unite his people.

1. Zhukin's tribe[]

Population before Saiyan-Tuffle War: 1,970,000.

Zhukin led the largest Saiyan tribe on the face of Planet Vegeta. This stems from his family's history, as Zhukin was a descendant from the last Legendary Super Saiyan, who lived around 1000 years before Zhukin. He was able to convince many people to join him because of this fact, as well as through brute force. Though not as powerful as Nappa, he was still strong, and his intellect was rivaled only by King Vegeta's. While Zhukin didn't become the Legendary Super Saiyan, the baby his daughter produced with another tribal leader named Paragus, was. Of course, none of this was known during Zhukin's life.

Zhukin's people survived on a mixture of farming, hunting, and trade. Nappa's region gave tribute to Zhukin, which provided them with much food and water. Because not as many people needed to produce food, Zhukin's forces were able to create more sophisticated stone cities than the other tribes. Additionally, this was the only tribe with vast examples of Saiyan art. Zhukin detested the Tuffles, and he had planned on waging war against them within his lifetime. However, since his tribe's population was vastly smaller than the collective Tuffle populations, he had still not quite figured out how to defeat them by the time Vegeta became a relevant political figure.

Zhukin was well-aware of Vegeta's rise to power, though he did not intervene during any of it. When Vegeta's combined forces (of all the tribes except Zhukin's) marched on Zhukin's great capitol city, Zhukin initially sent forces to defend himself. But as he didn't have a large garrison at his capitol, these forces were quickly overwhelmed, forcing Zhukin to reveal himself. He then asked to speak with Vegeta and his war council. During the conversation, Zhukin suddenly attacked Vegeta, attempting to assassinate him and break apart the union of the Saiyans. Vegeta was able to fend him off and killed Zhukin in a quick duel. Not only did Zhukin's death leave his tribe leaderless, but it proved he wasn't the Legendary Super Saiyan. Seeing this, Zhukin's former peoples quickly joined Vegeta. Vegeta said that he had not meant to kill Zhukin during their battle, and Zhukin's death would be a heavy blow to their war effort against the Tuffles. As Zhukin was a brilliant strategist, his knowledge of military warfare would have significantly helped the Saiyans stand up to the Tuffles. Despite saying that, Vegeta was eventually able to overcome the Tuffles by using his own smarts.

Several descendants of Zhukin's tribe survived past the Genocide of the Saiyans. Ledas's mother, Cyleria, was originally a member of this tribe as well. Ledas was still alive as of the end of Dragon Ball Z, so a full-blooded descendant was still alive many years after the destruction of Planet Vegeta. In fact, due to several events that occurred in his life (notably, his meeting with a God of the Universe), Ledas' lifespan was partially extended, and he ended up being the most long-lived of all the full-blooded Saiyans, thus tying this tribe with Vegeta's tribe as being the last one to have a Saiyan descendant alive in the universe.

2. Nappa's tribe[]

Population before Saiyan-Tuffle War: 930,000.

Nappa, who was perhaps the strongest Saiyan before Vegeta's rise to power, commanded one of the largest tribes on the Saiyan homeworld. His territory was extremely large, even bigger than Zhukin's, and often times he would claim lands that resided in other tribes' territories. Because his lands were so large, vast portions of them were never inhabited. Other tribal leaders routinely occupied small portions of his lands. Nappa's people were great hunters and farmers, and they had vast stores of food and water because of their productivity. Because of the size of his tribe, he never had to worry about any leader except for Zhukin. Thus, Nappa never went to war with the smaller tribes and paid tribute to Zhukin (in food and water) so as to keep peace. His forces would occasionally uproot other Saiyans from regions on the border of the territory, though by the time Vegeta went to unite the Saiyan race, Nappa's soldiers had largely stopped enforcing that.

Nappa was completely unaware of Vegeta's rise to power. He didn't even know who Vegeta was when the other Saiyan came to challenge him. However, with the forces of five united Saiyan tribes behind him, Vegeta was able to fight off Nappa's patrols and make his way to where Nappa lived. Then, Vegeta challenged Nappa to a duel, betting that if he won, Nappa would have to submit, and if Nappa won, he would submit. Nappa could not refuse this offer and dueled with Vegeta. He lost the fight, and thus had to bend the knee the future king. Nappa was promoted to Vegeta's war council immediately afterwards. He was feared by most members in that council, due to his recklessness and power. Because of his physical and political power, he was one of the most respected members on the council. Indeed, after Vegeta destroyed the Tuffles and created the united Saiyan Army (under the Planet Trade Organization), Nappa was promoted to the General of that entire army. Throughout the Tuffle War, he served a very similar war.

Nappa survived the Genocide of the Saiyan, as he training King Vegeta's son at the time. He was later killed when he traveled to Earth, and with his death, Nappa's tribe was rendered extinct.

3. Dogom's tribe[]

Population before Saiyan-Tuffle War: 562,000.

Right before the Saiyan-Tuffle War, Dogom led the third largest tribe. Before Vegeta began his uniting campaign, Dogom was more physically powerful than the future saiyan king. Despite being the leader of one of the larger saiyan tribes, Dogom was not one to go out of his way to initiate attacks on other tribes. Regardless, his tribe had seen its share of battles, and were always ready for combat.

Vegeta had claimed Zorn's, Paragus', and Creissa's tribe by the time he was ready to annex Dogom's. Seeing that Dogom would be very difficult to challenge directly, Vegeta decided to strike his capitol at night. Unprepared for the attack and out of desperation, Dogom was forced to surrender and join Vegeta. Cuber, Chaiva, Speonitch, and Kailon are the only saiyans of Dogom's tribe who survived the Saiyan genocide.

4. Vegeta's tribe[]

Population before Saiyan-Tuffle War: 341,000.

This tribe was the fourth largest tribe on the planet, thus making it an overall average-sized one. Most of the members were hunter-gatherers and their small, scattered populations lived near rivers. Most of them lived in rocky buildings near the edge of the water.

Vegeta became the leader of his tribe the day his father died from illness. Immediately afterwards, he gathered up his soldiers and captains and told them about his desire to unite the Saiyan race and destroy the Tuffles. Soon after, he used his forces to conquer Cressia's, Paragus', and Zorn's tribes. As all three of their tribes were smaller than Vegeta's, they were easier for him to go up against, and indeed, were necessary for him to grow the size of his population large enough to attack the larger tribes. Using the combine forces of his four tribes, he then conquered Dogom. After adding Dogom's populations to his own, he was easily able to exert military dominance against Nappa. Once he conquered Nappa, his forces accounted for more than half of the Saiyans living on the planet. These forces allowed him to comfortably enter into Zhukin's territory and then kill that tribal leader.

Vegeta considered all Saiyans to be a part of his tribe by the start of the Saiyan-Tuffle War. Despite this, almost all members of conquered tribes remembered their heritage and identified more with their old tribes than with Vegeta's. During the Saiyan-Tuffle War Vegeta's tribe was used less than the others, so as to preserve the population. And once the Saiyans won the war, most of Vegeta's people were put into the Middle Class or higher. As well, 95% of Vegeta's personal guards were people from his own tribe, as he trusted his own people far more than any others.

Prince Vegeta (King Vegeta's son) and Ledas were the two members of this tribe who survived the Genocide of the Saiyans. In fact, both of them survived through the end of Dragon Ball Z, making this the most-represented tribe of the post-Z Saiyan bloodlines.

5. Zorn's tribe[]

Population before Saiyan-Tuffle War: 217,000.

Zorn commanded a medium-sized tribe that lived on the borders of Vegeta's and Paragus' tribes. Zorn's territory was extremely dry, so his people's food and water sources were relatively small. Almost all food came from hunting, and what water they could use came from small lakes within the territory. Most rock huts were built around these precious water sources. Just before King Vegeta united the Saiyan race, Zorn's tribe had become engaged in war with Paragus' tribe over land and resource disputes, and he was close to wiping out his opponent's forces. Because Zorn had other tribes on all sides of his territory, he didn't care about the Tuffles.

King Vegeta was wary to engage Zorn's forces in the open, as he felt like he would lose too many soldiers to make conquering the other tribal leader practical. So instead, Vegeta and his captains led a night assault, which resulted in the destruction of Zorn's food supplies. Additionally, they poisoned several of the places Zorn's forces could get water from. Without food and water, Zorn was forced to surrender, thus giving Vegeta even more soldiers. Zorn, himself, was allowed to live, and he joined Vegeta's war council. He was still somewhat reserved about Vegeta's plan to conquer the Tuffles, but he rarely spoke against the King, anyway. Zorn and all of the people in his tribe were killed during the Genocide of the Saiyans.

6. Paragus' tribe[]

Population before Saiyan-Tuffle War: 146,000.

Paragus ruled over a relatively small tribe before the Saiyan-Tuffle War. He was a wise and calculating Saiyan lord, and his smarts impressed another tribal leader, Zhukin. Zhukin allowed Paragus to marry one of his daughters, which eventually resulted in the two of them producing their era's Legendary Super Saiyan.

Paragus' people lived along a series of rivers, where they could fish from. Aside from fishing, Paragus' people farmed the arid lands of their planet and lived in small huts. Paragus was in constant war with Zorn before Vegeta united the tribes, and his forces were losing to the more powerful tribe's soldiers. If the future king, Vegeta, had not intervened when he did, it is likely that Zorn would have destroyed Paragus' tribe utterly.

After Vegeta took over Zorn's and Cressia's tribes, his vast armies marched on Paragus' territory. Scouts saw them coming and reported back to their tribal leader. Paragus quickly surrendered to the much larger force and joined Vegeta's ranks. Like Zorn, Paragus became part of Vegeta's war council and aided the king in crafting strategy and tactics for the upcoming battles. It is worth noting that Paragus didn't care much about the Tuffles before being conquered. He had enough to worry about with facing off against Zorn's tribe and with trying to keep his people fed. So, he was originally neutral towards destroying the Tuffles. He soon changed that opinion, after joining Vegeta's forces, and became one of the most anti-Tuffle members on Vegeta's council.

Paragus' people were absorbed into Vegeta's main army and fought with the other Saiyans against the Tuffles. Bardock and his descendants were all originally part of Paragus' tribe, and of course Goku survived through much of the Dragon Ball series. As of the end of Dragon Ball Z, Goku and his descendants were the only members of this tribe left alive.

7. Creissa's tribe[]

Population before Saiyan-Tuffle War: 72,000.

Creissa was the only female Saiyan tribal leader. She also led the smallest tribe, both in population and amount of land. Her people lived amongst the rocks of a mountain range nearby a large Tuffle city. They were mostly farmers, though they did hunt small animals as well. Her people were spread out over several dozen small communities. It is estimated that her peoples' population was around 72,000 right before the Saiyan-Tuffle War. While it is unsubstantiated, Cressia did make several complaints about the Tuffles abducting and enslaving her people, thus lowering her tribe's population even further. Despite this, she was against any war with the Tuffles. Since the Tuffles outnumbered the Saiyans and had superior technology, resources, and leadership, she believed a war would be unwinnable for her kind.

Before the Saiyan-Tuffle War, Vegeta's tribe marched on Creissa's lands, resulting in a brief war between the two groups. Since Vegeta's tribe had significantly larger numbers, they were able to overpower Creissa's defenses and kill her. This was mainly because she would never agree to help Vegeta, no matter what. Because of this, she was one of only two tribal leaders who did not survive the Saiyan-Tuffle War. Immediately after Cressia's death, her remaining people were absorbed into Vegeta's tribe. After the destruction of Planet Vegeta, no member or descendant of Creissa's tribe was amongst the survivors.

Survivors[]

This section will list the Saiyan survivors through significant events the Dragon Ball timeline.

Genocide of the Saiyans[]

This is a list of full-blooded Saiyans, canon and fanon, who survived the Genocide of the Saiyans. As far as KidVegeta and Hyper Zergling canon goes, there are 12 Saiyans who survived the genocide. 7 of those Saiyans are canon, and 5 of them are fanon. Any Saiyans who are not on this list either do not exist or did not survive the genocide.

Goku[]

Goku survived the genocide by being sent to Earth just before his home planet was destroyed by Frieza. It is unknown why Frieza did not send anyone to Earth to exterminate him. Even though he died twice, Goku had also been revived twice, and he was still alive by the end of Dragon Ball Z. - Status: Alive

Vegeta[]

Vegeta survived the genocide by being sent on a mission away from his homeworld just before Frieza went to destroy it. As Vegeta was the only Saiyan that Frieza liked, Vegeta was the only Saiyan supposed to survive the genocide. He later went to Earth and became acquainted with the Z Fighters. All in all, Vegeta died twice before the end of Dragon Ball Z, though he had also been revived twice. As of the end of the series, he was still alive. - Status: Alive

Nappa[]

Nappa survived the genocide with Vegeta, despite him being the general of the entire Saiyan Army. He continued to work along with Vegeta after his planet's destruction until the two went to Earth. There, he was eventually executed by his Prince for failing to kill Goku. - Status: Dead

Raditz[]

Raditz, who is the brother of Goku, survived the genocide by unknown means. He later became part of Vegeta's team under the Planet Trade Organization and was the first of the Saiyans to reach Earth looking for Goku. He was later killed by Piccolo and never revived. - Status: Dead

Tarble[]

Tarble, the brother of Vegeta, survived the genocide by luck, as he was too weak to be put into the Saiyan army, and it seems he wasn't a priority (or perhaps not even known) to the Planet Trade Organization's extermination efforts. While he spent most of his life on a distant planet, on at least one occasion, he visited Earth to get his brother to kill a couple of aliens who were threatening him. - Status: Alive

Ledas[]

Ledas was born into the Elite class of the Saiyan race. As such, he became acquainted with the Prince at a young age. Soon after, the two became training partners and friends. When Frieza prepared to destroy the Saiyan race, he excluded Ledas and Vegeta from the rest and sent them on a mission to prevent their deaths. Ledas was late to leave the planet, however, and he was knocked unconscious by the shock wave of Planet Vegeta's destruction as he went to leave the system. Ledas then drifted in space for a while until he came to Cooler's territory. While there, he was forced to act as a soldier under various military leaders until he reached Super Saiyan and was able to escape. Eventually, he found Earth and was reunited with Vegeta. - Status: Alive

Ranks[]

Saiyan ranks are determined both by bloodline and power level. After King Vegeta set up the Saiyan kingdom post-war, he also relegated certain families to various classes. Those who were close associates to him during the war (such as Nappa) were given higher status. Currently, there is no way to rise in rank, even if one's power level becomes very high. This can be observed with conversations between Goku and Vegeta. Vegeta has always considered Goku to be Low Class, because he was born into that class, despite Goku becoming stronger than him through the course of Dragon Ball Z. Additionally, children are born into the same class as their parents. So the hybrid Trunks would be in the Super Elite, Goten, Gohan, and Pan would be in the Low Class. The given power levels for each class are averages; some members in each class may have power levels above or below the averages. Of course, the numbers only are accurate up until the destruction of Planet Vegeta.

Low Class[]

Average Power Level: 1 - 1500.
Percentage of Population: 40%.

Many Saiyans are in this class. Most of these Saiyans are extremely weak and very poor. A large portion of Zorn's, Paragus', and Cressia's people were put into this class. Bardock's family, which was part of Paragus' group, was put into this class, even though Bardock eventually became one of the most powerful Saiyans. These Saiyans have their children sent off at birth to distant planets. No Low Class Saiyan is allowed into Vegeta's Capitol, and they are not permitted to approach or speak any member of the Royal Family. The Known Low Class Saiyans are:

  • Bardock
  • Gine
  • Goku
  • Raditz
  • Tora
  • Fasha
  • Shugesh
  • Borgos

Middle Class[]

Average Power Level: 1501 - 2500.
Percentage of Population: 55%.

The bulk of the Saiyan Middle Class is made up of the peoples from Zhukin's, Dogom's, Nappa's, and Vegeta's tribes. These Saiyans are significantly more respected than those in the Low Class. They are allowed to visit the Royal Palace and speak with King Vegeta. Despite this, Middle Class Saiyans are also required to send off their children to distant planets at birth. As this is by far the largest class, they comprise most of the members of the Saiyan Army. There are no known named members of this class, however.

Elite Class[]

Average Power Level: 2501 - 3500.
Percentage of Population: 4%.

The Elite Class is comprised of individuals who distinguished themselves during the Saiyan-Tuffle War and had unusually high power levels. The majority of King Vegeta's personal guards are Elites; but, there are also Elite teams which function in the Saiyan Army and clear planets for Frieza. It is considered a great honor to be an Elite, and they often live in mansions or large houses, which are far more opulent than those owned by Saiyans in lower classes. Should one disgrace their family in a serious enough way, the entire bloodline may be banished to a lower class. Such actions can only be done by the King and are rare. Because of their high strength and prestige, Elites are able to access the Royal Palace and speak with the King as they wish. Paragus and Lascon are two examples of members of this class. Even though Elites are highly respected and capable warriors, they are not above the Saiyan mandate to send their newborn children to distant planets in order to conquer them for Frieza's empire. The known Elites are:

  • Paragus
  • Lascon
  • Artachoc
  • Ocra
  • Chaiva
  • Cyleria
  • Aubere
  • Sheliv
  • Tinpern
  • Kolhrai
  • Araegon
  • Nazumi
  • Rutabach

Super Elite Class[]

Average Power Level: 3501 and up.
Percentage of Population: 1%.

Super Elites are by far the rarest class of Saiyans. Not only are they the strongest members of the species, but they are usually related to or are good friends with the King. For example, Layeeck is King Vegeta's Captain of the Guard and friend, and he is considered to be a Super Elite. Many of the Saiyan tribal leaders are also Super Elites. Dogom and Nappa are highly ranked soldiers in the Super Elite. Indeed, Nappa is the general of the entire Saiyan Army. Now, the entire Royal Family is considered to be Super Elite by default. So even though Tarble is a relatively weak Saiyan (probably no stronger than a Low Class Saiyan), his blood makes him a Super Elite. Super Elites are the only Saiyans not required to send their children off to distant planets for Frieza. Because of this, their children are often groomed into their class by skilled trainers as well as their powerful parents - and this results in many Super Elite children being amongst the strongest soldiers on the entire planet. The known Super Elites are:

  • King Vegeta
  • Kusa
  • Prince Vegeta
  • Prince Tarble
  • Layeeck
  • Ledas
  • Nappa
  • Priyep
  • Dogom
  • Cuber
  • Kailon
  • Zorn

Transformations[]

These are the transformations which are possible for a Saiyan. Note: The Semi-Super Saiyan form that Ledas has in The Forgotten is not a true transformation, instead simply being an immature form of Super Saiyan 1. Additionally, the ability to transform into any level of Super Saiyan while in Great Ape is possible.

Beliefs[]

Primitive Saiyans had various religious beliefs. Over the course of Saiyan history, these varied widely. Some Saiyan societies were polytheistic, some were monotheistic; some were extremely religious, some were barely so. But by the time of the Saiyan-Tuffle War, almost all religious aspects of Saiyan culture had died out. Saiyans believe only that the strongest amongst them should rule - and they split up their tribal hierarchy according to that idea. Other non-religious beliefs include the necessity to die in battle to preserve one's honor, the adherence to ethnocentrism, and the idea that the Saiyans are the strongest race in the galaxy.

There is, however, only one constant in the Saiyan Belief system - the Legend of the Super Saiyan.

Super Saiyan[]

It is a widely held belief in Saiyan culture that a Super Saiyan will emerge every 1000 or so years. While a Super Saiyan does not have to appear every 1000 years (Vegeta mentioned that the last Super Saiyan appeared 1000 years ago, not that one has to appear every 1000 years), this is generally the case. The last Super Saiyan, the one who appeared before Goku 1000 years in the past, could only maintain his Super Saiyan transformation while in Great Ape. This is true for most of the previous Super Saiyans, though perhaps not all of them. There have been dozens of Super Saiyans in the past, and never has there been more than one at the same time, before Dragon Ball Z. It was generally believed that the only requirement for becoming a Super Saiyan was great strength - so this explains why both King and Prince Vegeta were expected to become Super Saiyans in their time. The idea that an emotional release was needed to unlock the form, curiously, was not passed down from generation to generation along with the other aspects of the Legend. As such, a key aspect of Super Saiyan knowledge was not retained by the Saiyan people. This also explains why Vegeta had such a hard time transforming for the first time, even though he had very high strength.

Now, there is a difference between the Legendary Super Saiyan (a title and transformation) and a Super Saiyan (a transformation). Each of the previous Super Saiyans before Goku is a Legendary Super Saiyan. The great strength of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, and Goten all allowed them to unlock forms of Super Saiyan, though none of them was a Legendary Super Saiyan.

Great Ape[]

The belief that Saiyans could go Great Ape was passed down through the generations after the last Super Saiyan (the one who existed 1000 years before Dragon Ball) killed himself. Soon after that time, the Tuffles used their technological prowess to block the two moons of Planet Vegeta from sight, so that no Saiyan could transform into a Great Ape. As no Saiyan was able to transform for the next 1000 or so years, this ability came to be regarded as myth. Like with the Super Saiyan transformation, many Saiyans did not think Great Ape was possible. Once King Vegeta infiltrated the Tuffle Capitol and destroyed the device, which was blocking the moons and their blutz waves, the Saiyans were able to transform into this form again.

Biology[]

This section will list only biological aspects of the Saiyans not covered on their canon page:

  • Saiyans, as well as hybrid Saiyans, develop into fetuses at 4x the rate of humans, though their gestation period is still roughly 9 months.

Battle Multipliers[]

These are the multipliers that will be used. While Ultra Super Saiyan is more physically powerful than Super Saiyan 2, the drawbacks in speed and durability make the form borderline unusable. Similarly, Full Power Super Saiyan has the same multiplier as regular Super Saiyan, though the user who has mastered it will have much more endurance and access to ki reserves than those who can only use regular Super Saiyan. Additionally, if one is a Great Ape and goes Super Saiyan 1, the multipliers for each transformation will multiply with one another (10 x 50); this means that a Saiyan who transforms into Super Saiyan while already in Great Ape will be 500x stronger than their base power level. This multiplier only gets larger as higher transformations are used while in Great Ape. Proper Zenkais will always yield a 33% increase to the Saiyan's maximum base power level, but this will only occur should that Saiyan be wounded to the point of being nearly killed. Any less significant injuries will not result in a 33% increase in power, but instead yield lesser increases that are dependent upon the level of damage the Saiyan suffers.

  • Great Ape - 10x user's base power.
  • Super Saiyan - 50x user's base power.
  • Ascended Super Saiyan - 75x user's base power.
  • Ultra Super Saiyan - 125x user's base power.
  • Full Power Super Saiyan - 50x user's base power.
  • Super Saiyan 2 - 100x user's base power.
  • Super Saiyan 3 - 400x user's base power.
  • Legendary Super Saiyan - no set level (grows with each use)
  • Zenkai - 33% increase to user's maximum base power level.

Super Saiyans[]

This is a timeline that shows when any Saiyan has reached a Super Saiyan level. Canon Saiyans and fanon Saiyans that are part of KidVegeta's and Hyper Zergling's universe are present. Half-breeds are also shown. Fanon character transformations are in bold. It's worth mentioning that Goku is the first Saiyan to go Super Saiyan in the Dragon Ball universe since the last Saiyan did 1000 or so years before him.
