Ren (レン, Ren) is a human girl who was found by Wolfe in the Diablo Desert. She was given to Yunwu by Wolfe as a gift to be the woman's consort. However, Wolfe was using the girl to get close to Yunwu in an attempt to poison the woman; ironically, soon after, Yunwu began using Ren as a double agent inside Wolfe's gang to poison him. She is a major character in Chasing Oblivion.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

For her age, Ren is slightly built and relatively short. She dyes her hair blue, though it is naturally black. When he first met her, Yamcha described her eyes as "azure pools wrapped in smoke". She wears rough bandit clothes while with Wolfe and his Wings. When she is with Yunwu, the deputy mayor forces her to wear dresses, often with purple in them. She also tends to wear flowers in her hair (Yunwu's favorite is a morning glory) when wooing the woman. Ren applies her own make-up, to which Yunwu once remarked she was highly skilled at.

Personality[]

Ren is an introverted individual. She tends not to talk much, although this is not to say she is asocial. Her friendship with Yamcha shows that when she is comfortable, Ren is fully capable of having long conversations about a variety of topics. She is a very dutiful girl, performing the role given to her by Wolfe to a precise degree. She is patient beyond her years; she is not prone to emotional outbursts. Ren is also skilled at writing waka for her age, being capable of including subtle messaging in her poetry that Yunwu did not pick up on. She is extremely good at sneaking about, as not even Yunwu's attendants were able to figure out that she was stashing a large supply of poison in the lady's apartment, nor did anyone see her poison the deputy mayor's tea. She does not seem to be attracted to Yunwu, evidenced by her response to Silver Snead in chapter 5 when he told her that she was going back to South City to see Yunwu again. It is unknown if she is attracted to women at all, or if her disgust is solely pointed towards Yunwu.

History[]

Not much is known about Ren's life before Chasing Oblivion. She stated that Wolfe found her running through the desert, through from what or from whom was never revealed. She never made mention of having a family, so most likely she was an orphan. However, given her knowledge of Wolfe and Mighty Mouse, which dates back to even before she was born, she seemed to be rather close with the leader of the Wings, implying that her story about Wolfe finding her in the desert was at best suspect.

Chasing Oblivion[]

In chapter 1, Ren was sent to Yunwu by Wolfe to relay the information about the Night Snakes' plane being shot down. Realizing this would start a gang war, Yunwu became irate at the young girl and burned the message. Ren then politely revealed that she was a present for Yunwu from Wolfe and would stay with the woman for the foreseeable future. She also revealed that Wolfe had found her running in the desert, although the specifics of her origins were not elaborated upon in any more detail. Afterwards, Yunwu retired to her chambers with the girl. Before going to bed, she forced Ren to perform cunnilingus on her.

In chapter 2, Yunwu and Ren visited Wolfe's hideout to discuss the fallout of the news that the Night Snakes' plane was destroyed. The girl quietly stood and listened to Yunwu and Wolfe discuss how to deal with the impending gang war between Wolfe's Wings and the Night Snakes. She also listened to Yunwu reveal to Wolfe that she needed Wolfe and his bandits to assassinate King Furry's Captain of the Guard. After their discussion was over, Yunwu instructed Ren to remain with Wolfe. Sad as she was to leave the girl, she thought to herself that she had to do that if she was to succeed in her plan of getting rid of both Mazuchiru and Wolfe. Then, Yunwu left.

Later in the chapter, Ren visited Yamcha while he was doing the dishes, and the two discussed baseball after the girl found Yamcha's own baseball. He revealed to her that his father had once been a professional baseball player and had hit that ball out of the park in a home run to win a game several years ago. Ren told him about the time she had caught a foul ball at a game. The two had fun sharing stories until Silver Snead appeared and demanded Yamcha follow him to Wolfe's quarters.

In chapter 3, Yunwu's attendants informed her, after she returned to her apartment, that Ren had not yet returned. Yunwu grew anxious, for Ren did not usually take her time. She thought about how she had sent Ren to pick up some poison from Thoras, one of Wolfe's bandits whom she had introduced to Wolfe many years ago (and thus trusted more than most bandits) and thought to herself that Ren would be returning soon.

Later on, Wolfe used Ren to relay a message to the leaders of the One-eyed Jackalopes. She told them that Wolfe's men had shot down the wrong plane and that it had just been an accident - nothing to start a war over. The men refused to listen to her, however, as they had expected Wolfe himself to meet with them. She then gave them a gift - a black scorpion inside a box that bit one of the leaders as soon as he opened it. Then, Wolfe began sniping the bandits from afar, leading to chaos. Ren tried to run away, but she was shot in the back and collapsed into the dirt without more than a whimper.

After Wolfe and his gang finished off the One-eyed Jackalope leaders, he ordered Rosey to have Mingo stitch the girl up and take her back to the hideout, where Doc was waiting to save her life. He also threatened Rosey's life if Ren died, to which Rosey fearfully replied that he would make sure to save Ren. Wolfe continued to think to himself that Ren was important - that he had groomed her to take out Yunwu - even as the bikes sped off to the One-Eyed Jackalopes' hideout, intending to blow it up with Yunwu's tampered explosives.

In chapter 4, after Wolfe returned from destroying the Warthogs gang, he met with Rosey and Thoras. Rosey told Wolfe that Doc had stabilized Ren, but that she hadn't woken up yet. Wolfe again threatened Rosey's life, stating fiercely that if the girl died so too would he and Doc. Rosey promised the girl would live; Wolfe sent him back to Doc to remind him that Ren must be saved at all costs.

Later on, Yunwu met with Snead in her tower. At first she tried to interrogate him, but when he told her to either set him free or kill him, she agreed to set him free... for a price. The Lady of South City demanded that Ren be returned to her in three days time. She threatened to not only kill Snead, but all of Wolfe's Wings, including Wolfe, if Ren was not returned to her. Snead promised to return the girl, and so he was allowed to leave.

Afterwards, Yunwu called up Thoras to learn about Ren's condition. The man told her that the girl was stable, but that Wolfe had taken her and his most trusted bandits to a different hideout on account of Thoras' poison being stolen. He also revealed that he had given some of his poison to Ren so that the girl could kill Wolfe, but that the rest had been stolen by an unknown force. Thoras was not one of the bandits allowed to go to the new hideout, however. Yunwu was pleased by this nonetheless, thinking that Ren would have an easy opportunity to poison Wolfe at the new hideout. Yunwu thought to herself that she would not let Wolfe escape with his life for getting Ren shot.

Later, when Yunwu was waiting for Doctor Gero, she thought to herself how she had been teaching Ren poetry and read one of the girl's waka poems. The poem produced an emotional reaction in Yunwu.

In chapter 5, after Yamcha returned to Wolfe's secret hideout, Ren came to see him on the balcony of the second floor, which overlooked the desert. Puar introduced himself wildly to Ren, who seemed to like him. When Yamcha asked if she was feeling better, the girl said that she had slept through most of the pain. She then pissed off the balcony. After Yamcha told Ren that he had burnt the ramen he had cooked everyone for lunch, she warned him that if he messed up dinner, Wolfe would be furious. Soon after, a knock came at the door, revealing Snead, who told Ren that she was going to accompany him back to South City after dinner that night. The girl seemed somewhat distraught by this during dinner, keeping her head bowed and eating very little.

After dinner, she departed back for the city with Snead. He returned her to Yunwu that night. After Snead left, Yunwu fretted over Ren's wounds, promising to never let her be put in harm's way again. Then, the woman and the girl engaged in certain private activities together. In the morning, Yunwu carried the sleeping girl to her room. After Yunwu was finished meeting with several clients, she returned to Ren for a mid-afternoon affair.

In chapter 6, after Yunwu conducted some business with one of her attendants, Ren came out of from her bedroom, having just woken up. Yunwu asked her if she wanted tea, but the girl refused. She did, however, agree to have some breakfast, which Yunwu made herself. The lady then asked her to read off her latest waka. Embarrassed, the girl nonetheless did so. The poem made Yunwu cry and kiss her on the lips in front of everyone.

Later, when Yunwu retreated to her room after feeling ill, Ren was seen in there writing poetry. Upon request, she, retrieved the lady's cell phone for her, but Yunwu was too delirious to text Hasky. She had the girl send a message to Hasky to not use the infinite energy device yet and hold tight. At that moment, Yunwu noticed that Ren wasn't sick, despite eating the same breakfast she had. Yunwu panicked, realizing she had been poisoned. She pleaded with the girl to get help, but Ren simply pocketed the cell phone and read another waka from a strip of paper which subtly confirmed to the woman that the girl had poisoned her. Realizing this with horror, Yunwu threw her arm out at Ren, but the girl was too far away to grasp. Yunwu died moments later from the poison.

In chapter 7, Yamcha ran into Ren in South City. She was selling mangoes on the street. The girl told him that Yunwu had died (after having suffered an accident), although Yamcha had not known the deputy mayor. He told her about the fight in the desert between the Night Snakes and Wolfe's Wings, which had been followed by the Chàoxing Gon ambushing the survivors, resulting in hundreds of deaths. He did not know who had ultimately won the battle, as he had fled before it had concluded. He ended up buying a mango from her.

The Shunko Onsen[]

Near the beginning of this story, Jar Tur gave Goku a room in the Shunko Inn. There, he was tended to by the five female employees. He spent most of his time in the dining hall, where they served him a tremendous amount of food, eagerly refilling his plates and cups, hoping for tips (not that Goku knew what a tip was). They wanted to do other activities with him, such as singing karaoke, but Goku was only interested in eating more food.

Later, Goku went to the hot springs. He noticed that the blue-haired server girl was the only other person around. She asked him if he needed any help. He wondered if he could eat his rice bun in the pool. She told him that wasn't allowed, so he scarfed it down before hopping in. The serving girl asked Goku how he'd found the onsen. He said he had just followed the trail. The same had been true for her. Goku told her that he was training for the World Martial Arts Tournament. She warned him that he couldn't leave the onsen until paying for his meal and usage of the hot springs. Goku retorted that Jar Tur had invited him to the place. On top of that, he didn't have any money.

That had also been the case for the girl. She had stayed three nights at the onsen before Jar Tur told her she had to pay. She had been working there ever since to pay back her debts to the man. He wondered why she hadn't just run away, but she reminded him that not everyone was a warrior. She still had Ƶ140,000 to pay off. Goku didn't like what Jar Tur was doing to the girls. Ren said that on days without customers, the master would have his fun with the serving girls. Goku didn't understand what that meant, and she wouldn't elaborate. Soon, Ren returned to cleaning, and Goku, loose and warm, returned to his room.

That evening, as Goku attempted to leave the onsen, Jar Tur confronted him outside the front door. The server girls came running to the door, hearing the commotion, just in time to see their master get to his feet, cradling a broken wrist, as his sword came down upon him, piercing him through the throat. Bleeding and gagging, he fell, dead. The girls, screaming and crying in joy, rushed out to thank Goku, but the boy, not understanding that they were overjoyed at being freed, ran off into the mist, apologizing profusely. The girls officially closed the onsen the next day.

Trivia[]

  • There is only one scene in Chasing Oblivion, in chapter 5 when Ren pisses off the rocky second-floor overlook of Wolfe's hideout, which confirms Ren is actually biologically male.
  • It is hinted at throughout Chasing Oblivion that Ren could possibly be Wolfe's daughter.
