Paprikan (パプリカン, Papurikan) is a Makyan. He served under Admiral Bael for many years in Cooler's Empire before defecting in Age 767 and becoming a space pirate. Thereafter, he gained a notorious reputation. He traveled to Earth in Age 776 in an attempt to collect the Dragon Balls to wish for immortality.
Overview[]
Appearance[]
Paprikan is a tall, brown-skinned Makyan with black eyes. He is somewhat overweight for his size, due to his excessive drinking. He has long, pointed ears. His hair is white, asymmetrical, and stuck up in places. His Planet Trade Organization armor is black, white and green and only has a shoulder pauldron on the left side. Additionally, he wears black-and-white fingerless gloves, armored gauntlets, and a dark crimson cape. His scouter is red.
Personality[]
Paprikan is a foul-mouthed drunkard. He is a cruel and prideful warrior, prone to boasting and toying with his prey. He is both merciless and greedy. Due to his alcoholism, he is more reckless in recent years than when he worked for Admiral Bael. Despite his penchant for drinking, there are moments where he regrets the "sick and desperate animal" he has become. He regrets not becoming a judge at The Citadel. When he still worked for the Planet Trade Organization, Paprikan was quiet, dutiful, and subservient to his commanding officer. He never raised his voice, nor did he give out his true opinions on matters. His rage towards Bael festered for years until he finally assassinated the man in Age 767.
History[]
A Quest for Booty[]
In the sixth scene of chapter 1, Jaco thought to himself what a horrible day he'd had. He had lost a card game to the Galactic King, broken his stereo, dropped his sandwich, and now he was being beaten up by Paprikan, a Makyan whom he had stopped for speeding on the patrolman's way to Earth. Paprikan mocked him. When Jaco tried to defend his honor, the Makyan hit him with another punch. He drank from a canteen and dared Jaco to attack him. Jaco, who had only stopped the man for a routine traffic violation, offered to give him a misdemeanor speeding ticket and let him go on his way. Paprikan scoffed, telling him that he would have killed him most days, but today he had places to be, and so there was no time. He shot Jaco with a ki blast, hopped back into his ship, and sped off into the void.
In the third scene of chapter 2, Paprikan arrived at Earth. He landed in an icy tundra in the far north. Noticing that his scouter wasn't working, he swore to himself that he would murder the Planet Trade Organization scientists who had been working on it when he returned to Cooler's territory (after he wished for immortality with the Dragon Balls), especially the one who had not gotten him his Space Chips at Spacey's. The Makyan threw his scouter into the snow and retreated to his pod and searched for a replacement chip for its interface. Once he found it, he returned to the tundra only to see a small animal diving into the snow with his scouter. He cursed mightily before pursuing.
In the sixth scene, Paprikan hunted the scouter thief. Impatiently, after drinking a lot of fire wine, he released an explosive wave that decimated the surrounding area, destroying his space pod in the process. He couldn't believe what he had done. Before long, he was vomiting. Afterwards, he told himself that he would use his first wish from the Dragon Balls to never crave alcohol again. He thought of Bael, his old commanding officer. Paprikan did not know if Bael had died from his assassination attempt, but assumed so. Drunkenly, he mocked his old boss and lamented the fact that he hadn't become a judge at the citadel.
He noticed a being in the distance and flew over to it. It was a big, furry beast. As he approached it, it melted to smoke, washing over him. Feeling strange, Paprikan collapsed. He heard someone whispering in his ears and felt a gnawing feeling in his stomach before blacking out.
In the seventh scene, Jaco and Colonel Srednas visited Idiro VI to have a picnic luncheon. They listened to a soap opera on their radio for a while before Jaco switched the channel. A reporter was talking about how Paprikan, a rogue officer of the Planet Trade Organization, had recently rampaged through Perneki Minor, which was a helium mining planet, and had killed 700 miners. Galactic Patrolmen were arriving on the scene. A survivor was interviewed, stating that Paprikan had transformed into a hideous monster before slaughtering the workers. The reporter stated that Paprikan had boasted that he was going to Earth next. Immediately after, the Galactic King contacted Jaco and informed him that it was his duty to go after Paprikan and warn the people of Earth about the alien. Jaco, annoyed at being picked for the job, nevertheless jumped into his ship and raced off towards Earth.
In the second scene of chapter 3, Bulma had just repaired the Dragon Radar Ledas and Ryori had been using when Jaco's space ship landed on her lawn. The alien told her that he was tracking a wanted space criminal who had come to Earth. At the mention of a space pirate, Ledas shot over to them (he must have been nearby) and demanded to fight the rogue warrior. Jaco seemed not to believe that the boy could handle a space pirate. Ledas sensed for the pirate and after a few moments of concentrating, pinpointed his location in the far north of the world. He asked Jaco what the guy did to make him chase him all the way to Earth. Jaco refused to answer that question. Ledas told him that he was far stronger than the power level he sensed in the north, so Jaco allowed the boy to become his sidekick in his mission to hunt down Paprikan.
In the fourth scene, Paprikan awoke inside a cave. He was hanging from chains against a wall. There were many oil lamps around, giving the place some light. He reflected on some old memories and how he hadn't had any friends or comrades since he killed Bael all those years ago. He broke free from his bindings and ventured down the tunnel. He eventually came to a larger room where he found the four-star Dragon Ball lying on a table. He heard whispering and felt as if someone was watching him, but nobody appeared for a while.
Then, two beings entered from the far side of the chamber, talking to one another. One, a boy, mentioned that he could sense that someone was in that room. Paprikan hid behind a rock pillar. He noticed that one of the two was Jaco and correctly surmised that the Galactic Patrolman had come for him. With him was a boy with a monkey tail. Jaco found the Dragon Ball and gave it to the boy (Ledas). Ledas was extremely surprised to find a Dragon Ball in that place. That pissed Paprikan off. The Dragon Ball was his - he was going to collect all seven and wish for immortality. Ledas started calling for Paprikan to show himself. The Makyan did not fear the boy, so he prepared to fight.
Just then, smoke seeped into the room. Paprikan noticed it and began to feel woozy. Suddenly, about sixty apes materialized from the smoke and attacked Ledas for taking their Dragon Ball. Jaco jumped up on the table and remarked that the beasts looked like his uncle Bessupo. The Saiyan, having taken to the air, easily dodged the apes' attempts at grabbing him. Seeing how nonchalantly Ledas was dodging the apes, Paprikan realized he would not be able to beat the kid in a fight. Ledas threw the Dragon Ball back to Jaco, remarking that since he was a Super Elite, it would be best for him to hold onto it.
The apes turned their attention to Jaco. Paprikan thought to himself that ever since Jaco had arrested thirty-seven members of his old crew for smuggling contraband space tacos into a space movie theater, he had never forgiven the bugger. Jaco, for all his worth, fought off the yetis valiantly, killing them by the dozens with his laser gun. During the skirmish, Paprikan fled. Once Jaco killed off all of the yetis, he asked Ledas where the space pirate was. The boy couldn't sense him nearby, so he figured the Makyan had fled. Jaco vowed to track him down no matter what, as he desperately needed six months of vacation time (which was the prize for taking care of Paprikan).
In the sixth scene, Beelzebub, Abo, and Kado met up with Ledas and Jaco in the far north of the world. Jaco was frightened by Abo and Kado, but they reassured him that they were good guys now. Jaco thought that Beelzebub was a bounty hunter hired by Abo and Kado, but the demon prince corrected him on the matter (though he did like the idea of becoming a bounty hunter), stating that he was only collecting the Dragon Balls to bring his father back to life. Jaco was confused, for he thought Ledas was going to use the Dragon Balls himself. The Saiyan informed him that Shenron granted three wishes and he only needed to use one. Jaco asked if he could use the third wish, but Kado asserted that he and his brother owned the third wish.
Paprikan, who was lurking nearby, had heard what they had said. He was surprised to see Abo and Kado and briefly thought they were chasing him, but then remembered that they had been after Tarble the last he'd heard. He assumed that Ledas was Tarble and that he had gotten Jaco to help him fight Abo and Kado, while the brothers had hired Beelzebub to help them. Beelzebub took out Towa's scroll and noticed that the seventh Dragon Ball was headed to their location. He sensed that Kibito Kai was one of two people with the ball (the other being far stronger than the Kai). The demon prince ordered Abo and Kado to fight off the purple man and his assistant and also asked for Ledas' help.
The Saiyan refused to help unless Abo and Kado were defeated. He wanted to watch the fight, however. Beelzebub thought that was too risky. Ledas reminded him that he was the strongest fighter around. The demon complained that he wasn't going to stop Kibito Kai's champion, but Ledas promised to do so if Abo and Kado failed. Jaco wanted to stay where they were, but since Ledas and Beelzebub didn't trust Abo and Kado, the other two overruled him. Jaco was allowed to stay if he wanted, but Ledas mentioned there could be more of those smoke-monster yetis, which spooked Jaco badly, so he went with them. Paprikan followed them out, noticing his scouter in the mouth of a snow fox nearby.
In the first scene of chapter 4, Paprikan snuck up on Ledas, Jaco, and Beelzebub as they watched Buu and Aka fight. He concealed his power until the last second. Then, he headbutted Ledas, knocking him out. Jaco fled in terror. Beelzebub didn't move an inch. Paprikan told the demon that the Dragon Balls were his.
Beelzebub was unconcerned and prepared to fight him to the death for the balls. They attacked each other. Paprikan was able to withstand Beelzebub's first assault, which gave him confidence. Then, Beelzebub cut his cheek open with a finger beam, and the Makyan became enraged. He hit the demon with an energy beam that not even Admiral Bael had been able to dodge during one of their sparring sessions. Beelzebub flew off the island, falling into the ocean. Paprikan pursued him, getting a reading of only 100,000 from his scouter. He knew he would be able to kill the kid if that was his full strength.
In the third scene, Beelzebub regained his balance, righting himself just as a pirate ship came floating by. He landed on its deck. There were many pirates on board. Maron, a woman, was with them, but at the first sign of trouble, she ran to the captain's chambers. The captain ordered his men to attack Beelzebub. The demon kicked all of them into the water. Then, Paprikan landed on deck. He attacked Beelzebub with an energy hook. The two traded blows, damaging the ship in the process. Out came Captain Patchjaw, a giant worm-like monster pirate, Maron on his arm. The remaining crew accompanied them. He spit out a sword and attacked the pair. Paprikan effortlessly sliced his sword in two and Beelzebub kicked him far out into the ocean where he no doubt died of hypothermia minutes later. One of the pirates tried to distract the fighters with Maron, but Paprikan just threw everybody overboard. Whether or not they died was not shown.
Paprikan once more turned his attention to the boy. He refused to believe that the demon was stronger than him, so he hit the kid with a flurry of attacks, including his Pepper Shaker, but they did little damage to Beelzebub (although the ship was torn to pieces). Afterwards, Beelzebub hit him in the face with a ki blast, destroying his scouter and leaving a terrible wound on his forehead. Paprikan whined about Beelzebub getting in his way, for he just wanted space beer. The prince couldn't believe that that was going to be Paprikan's wish. He retorted that wishing his father back to life was much more important. Having heard enough, Paprikan transformed into his Giant Form, and the two fell into battle stances.
In the fifth scene, Beelzebub and Paprikan continued their fight. Paprikan dominated Beelzebub in his giant form. The boy was battered by energy blasts, but did not give up. He used his telekinetic communication to surprise Paprikan before attacking him. The man caught him and put him in a bear hug. He squeezed the boy while declaring himself triumphant. Just then, Beelzebub shot eye beams into the Makyan's forehead wound. The beams went right through his skull, killing the man instantly.
In the seventh scene, Ledas and Beelzebub returned to the island where Jaco was. The prince told the Galactic Patrolman that he had killed Paprikan. Jaco was impressed and told him that he should become a bounty hunter.
