Ms. Mahobi (マホビ 先生, Mahobi Sensei) is a human native to West City. She was the language arts and social studies teacher in Ryori and Ledas' make-up summer school program to complete seventh grade in Age 774. She is a secondary character in the West City Saga of Dragon Ball: Heart of the Dragon.
Overview[]
Appearance[]
Ms. Mahobi is a short woman with medium-length bushy black hair and brown eyes. Her skin is fairly light. She tends to wear dark formal pantsuits during her time in the story.
Personality[]
Ms. Mahobi is the youngest and least experienced of the teachers. She uses a lot of movies and documentaries to supplement her history classes, showing that she was somewhat overwhelmed when it came to lesson planning. While she is the easiest grader of the three teachers, she is also the only one to not grade on a curve, making her classes somewhat more of a challenge than the others'. Mahobi admits to Anraku in chapter 11 that she doesn't like the seventh-graders, thinking of them as truants who wouldn't amount to anything when they got older. She particularly dislikes Ledas for his disruptions in her lecture on the Saiyan invasion of Earth. She parties in bars a lot, even on school nights, to cool off from the stress of her job. She can drink a significant amount of alcohol, indicating that she is either an alcoholic or near enough as makes no matter. Mahobi is stubborn and headstrong, as seen during her parent-teacher conference with Jia in chapter 11 where she refused to rescind Ledas' detentions and considered suspending him for his disobedience. Mahobi becomes more withdrawn and hostile towards the students after learning they had recorded her singing and flashing her boobs the Guac while singing karaoke.

West City Saga[]
On May 30, Age 774, Ledas and Ryori attended their first day of classes, meeting Mr. Takkuro, Ms. Kairyupin, and Ms. Mahobi for the first time, along with their fellow students, Chiwan, Hachi, Azashi, Chiaki, Tabashi, and Ippi. Ms. Mahobi began the first lesson (grammar and spelling) by telling the class she would do her best to get them through the seventh grade in the month she had been allotted. She reminded them that the schoolwork would be intensive and advised the kids to get to know one another and study together to improve their chances of passing the class.
Ms. Mahobi watched the kids babble on from her office while finishing her lunch.
On June 1st, Mr. Takkuro taught the seventh-graders math. Ledas was able to complete the assignment without cheating, though he was clearly injured from sparring with Vegeta. His condition deteriorated during Ms. Mahobi's lecture.
On June 3rd, in Ms. Mahobi's class, Ledas winced from discomfort in his ribs while pretending to take notes.
In class on June 5th, Ms. Mahobi led a history lesson. A video played on a projector. Mahobi told them they would be studying the four species-ending disasters that week. The kids would have to write an essay on one of the disasters to be submitted the following Monday. She asked the class what the first disaster was. Chiwan instantly answered that it was King Piccolo's attempted usurpation of King Furry. Mahobi praised Chiwan for her knowledge, telling them about King Piccolo's near annihilation of humankind. Ryori watched the clock, impatient for class to end. They watched various videos of King Furry, King Piccolo, and kid Goku. When Goku's tail was shown, Chiaki looked at Ledas, Ryori noticing.
In Ms. Mahobi's history class on June 6th, the seventh-graders learned about the Saiyan invasion of Earth. Mahobi recounted that a group of eight warriors had gathered to fight the Saiyans and their little green men, most of whom were previous World Martial Arts Tournament participants. She noted that while the name of the little boy (Gohan) wasn't known, these same fighters appeared at the Cell Games some years later. Chiwan recognized Yamcha from the Taitans. Ledas couldn't hold in his laughter when he saw Nappa and Vegeta. He was in disbelief that Nappa had gone bald. Hachi didn't understand how Ledas knew the aliens' names. Mahobi threatened to give him detention if he didn't settle down. She next showed them an interview with Yajirobe in a restaurant. Ledas once again laughed. Yajirobe told the reporters that the aliens were called Saiyans, promising Goku and the other warriors would deal with them.
Chiaki recalled Goku was the kid who defeated King Piccolo. Mahobi praised him for remembering that, noting Goku and Yajirobe joined the battle later for unknown reasons. She gave a brief overview of the Saiyans' destruction of East City before showing news footage of the Z Fighters fighting the Saibamen. The seventh-graders had a visceral reaction, realizing those beasts were of the same species as Ledas' pets. Mahobi told them Yamcha was killed by a Saibaman, but the rest of the fighters made short work of the Saibamen. After another close-up of Nappa, Ledas guffawed. Mahobi gave him one final warning not to disrupt the class again. Chiwan brought up that Nappa had also destroyed a second city, Cumin City, although there was no footage of it. Tabashi added that a navy detachment had been lost too. His father had died in the battle. Mahobi agreed, although King Furry had refused to share any footage of the incident. She showed additional footage of the battlefield after Nappa killed Tien and Piccolo. She said that by this point, the fighting had shifted elsewhere, with Goku and Yajirobe joining the battle. Ledas asked what had happened to Nappa. Mahobi told him he had died in the fighting, which Ledas found odd, as he didn't believe any of the fighters could match his power level of 7300. The other kids thought he had chūnibyō because he was measuring power as if they lived in a video game.
Having had enough, Mahobi gave Ledas detention. The boy was most displeased but said nothing. Mahobi stated there was almost no footage of the second stage of the battle, but the Z Fighters won without taking further casualties. The only bit of footage was a shaky helicopter camera shot of Vegeta falling from the sky unconscious (after getting hit by the Spirit Bomb). Yajirobe and Goku were visible on the battlefield. Vegeta got up, releasing an explosive wave that glitched out the camera. The last footage they were shown was of Nappa's space pod blowing up in a government facility. Tabashi watched Ledas, anger coloring his cheeks as he grit his teeth.
After skipping his detention, Ledas flew back to school to make sure he was actually in class when Mahobi released him. She was in the classroom, shopping online. Ledas' afterimage was in his chair, pretending to take notes from a book. Ledas flew through the window, returning to his seat, and breaking the afterimage. Mahobi's timer went off; she hoped Ledas had learned a valuable lesson and wouldn't disrupt class again. Without saying anything, he gathered his books, slung his book bag around his neck, and ran out of there.
The next day, during a vocab test led by Ms. Mahobi, Ryori helped Ledas cheat by writing answers for him to copy before erasing them and writing down his own.
On June 13th, the seventh-graders watched a movie with Ms. Mahobi in class. The three spice contestants had rolls of paper towels on their desks that they used to dab at their eyes, noses, and mouths. Ms. Mahobi was none too pleased with them, though she said nothing.
After class, Ryori, Tabashi, Ledas, and Chiaki walked home together, the latter three holding detention slips. Chiaki ranted about how detention as a concept was morally repulsive, stating that in his opinion, teachers shouldn't have the right to keep students in a room after class. Ledas agreed. Chiaki declared they'd have to get Ms. Mahobi really good now.
During class on June 16th, the seventh-graders took an English exam. Ryori helped Ledas cheat by writing answers for him to copy before erasing them and writing his own answers. Ms. Mahobi was glued to a talk show on her computer. After class, everyone left except Ledas and Ryori. Jia was waiting for them in the hallway. Mahobi, Ledas, and Jia entered the teacher's office while Ryori played on his phone outside.
Mahobi informed Jia Ledas had two detentions (on Friday and Saturday) and had been disruptive in class multiple times. He was at risk of not passing the seventh grade if he continued acting out. Jia said the detentions she'd given him were illegitimate, and after targetting Ledas for his natural hair color, she couldn't trust Mahobi's judgment. Mahobi apologized but noted she had only been following official policy. Ledas called her a terrible person for going along with an immoral policy. Mahobi found that rude and asked Jia to put a stop to Ledas' behavior. She backed up the boy, agreeing that the teachers had been harassing him. She threatened to take Mahobi and perhaps the school at large to court if they did not back down, noting that as a SAARO employee, she'd have access to the king's treasury to pay for the finest lawyers.
Mahobi didn't believe she had done anything wrong by giving Ledas detention for disrupting her lecture on the Saiyan invasion. Ledas was fine with her reprimanding him, but he had a big problem with detention, thinking no teacher should have the power to hold a student after class. He said she wasn't his mother and it wasn't her place to try to parent him. Mahobi wanted to suspend him for saying that. Jia told her to stop getting caught up in emotional bullshit and focus on her teaching. Mahobi realized there was no getting through to the woman, thinking it now made sense why Ledas was the way he was. Ledas questioned the morals of anyone who thought detention was a legitimate teaching tool. Mahobi said it was her right by the law, so he'd have to suck it up. It didn't matter if Ledas thought it was wrong of her to give him detention. It was her call. She refused to rescind either detention. Jia ordered Ledas to remain respectful of Mahobi in the classroom and threatened her with legal action if she tried to suspend him. She and Ledas left swiftly afterward, not saying another word to Mahobi. Ryori regrouped with them and everyone left.
That night, during Anraku's shift at the Guac, Ms. Mahobi entered. He switched positions with another bartender so that he could serve her. They exchanged words, Anraku smooth-talking her from the get-go, even giving her several free drinks and shots. As Mahobi grew drunker, she opened up, mentioning the truant seventh-grade class she was teaching. She was nearly at her wits' end with a boy she'd given several detentions to. Next year, Mahobi wanted to teach older kids, as she couldn't stand petty tween drama. Anraku advised her to stop worrying about the kids, shifting the conversation to her clothing by complimenting her jacket. She scoffed when he called her an upscale patron, noting her salary was meager at best. She wondered what was the point of teaching kids she deemed no good to begin with, for whether they succeeded or failed the class meant nothing to her. Anraku said the kids weren't worth the headache of thinking about while she was off work, which she appreciated.
Anraku lost contact with her while serving other patrons. Mahobi moved to a booth with a man. By now, she was significantly intoxicated. Around three in the morning, the patrons were engaged in a karaoke party. For Ms. Mahobi's turn, she sang the awful song, "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!", flashing the crowd while she belted out the lyrics. Anraku recorded the performance, trying not to laugh (that'd be unprofessional of an employee of his stature).
The next day, after Ms. Kairyupin's lesson ended, she received a text from someone (which seemed to massively irritate her). She informed the class Ms. Mahobi wasn't feeling well, so she'd be filling in for her during the history lesson that day. After starting the video, Kairyupin texted a response to Mahobi, and judging by her facial expressions, she was pissed.
On June 18th, Ledas, Chiaki, and Tabashi served their detention at the middle school. Ms. Mahobi shopped for purses online while Chiaki played sudoku, Tabashi played on his phone behind a book, and Ledas slept, using an afterimage as cover. When it was over, Mahobi dismissed them, telling them she hoped they had learned something. As Chiaki left the room, he played the video of Ms. Mahobi singing karaoke at the Guac loud enough for Mahobi to hear.
After they left, Ms. Mahobi received a text from her sister informing her someone had recorded her singing karaoke last night and the video was blowing up all over social media. Mahobi was extremely embarrassed and ashamed of what she had done.
On June 24th, Ryori, Ledas, and Tabashi were the last three in the classroom with Ms. Mahobi, finishing their in-class English essay. Ryori was writing and erasing a lot so that Ledas could copy his answers. Finally, Ledas finished his test, turned it in, and left the room. Ryori breathed a sigh of relief, thinking to himself that Ledas would owe him big-time for that. He got to work on his answers.
Later, everyone returned to the room, including the other teachers, as the class celebrated the end of their last day by eating cake and watching a low-budget movie Mr. Takkuro had a small role in as a cop. Afterward, they were released from class.
Trivia[]
