After a life of glory as a renowned martial artist, he formed the Wolf Style Dojo with the goal of training the new generation of warriors into greatness, with his most notable successors being Jin Judoka, Sei-Sen, and Hoshi.

Master Renji has long-time rivalries against both Master Iguru and Master Kashi, the leaders of the Crane Style Dojo and the Turtle School, which serve as a central plot point for a majority of the series.

    Biography[]

    Backstory[]

Master Renji (廉侍) was born in a cabin in the bamboo forests of South District on February 27th, Age 918. He grew up in the country and began training from an early age, taking out bears and bandits as practice all the way from the age of four. By his teenage years, he was already one of Earth's most formidable warriors alongside a boy named Iguru and a young man named Kashi, who was a descendant of the legendary martial artist known as Krillin. Kashi eventually surpassed his master and became the leader of the Turtle School, while Iguru did the same with his own master and became the leader of the Crane Style Dojo.

Eventually falling behind in his early twenties due to not leading a dojo of his own, Master Renji realized that his style of fighting was not one that was commonly seen, which was attacking in bursts and relying heavily on counterattacks rather than attacking first head-on. He decided to form his own dojo, the Wolf Style Dojo, focusing on these aspects of battle. The dojo was formed with the goal of allowing each individual student to create their own techniques and find their own path, rather than following a strict standard of what it means to be in the dojo.

Over the years, the Wolf Style Dojo gained popularity and eventually rivaled both the Turtle School and the Crane Style Dojo, led by his former rivals Kashi and Iguru. These three schools were seen as the "big three" of martial arts dojos and by Age 991 at the time of the 97th Tenkaichi Budokai, all of the quarter-finalists were members of these schools.

    97th Tenkaichi Budokai Saga[]

Master Renji trains Sei-Sen and the rest of the Wolf Style Dojo students in the months leading up to the tournament, with the hopes of conquering the Tenkaichi Budokai for the school. He plays a large part in helping Sei-Sen with the development of her own technique, the Taiyokami Wave, which she uses to defeat Kenju Zu in the final of the tournament, resulting in her victory. During the semi-final matchup between Kenju Zu and another young martial artist by the name of Jin Judoka, he notices that the latter has a lot of raw potential, ready to be perfected by strict martial arts teaching. One problem: Jin Judoka is an assassin and the right-hand of a notorious hitman by the name of Tachizo the Broken, with there having been an incident where Master Renji and Sei-Sen encountered the two in the months leading up to the tournament, being defeated but spared by the duo. Despite this, Master Renji was strongly interested in taking the young warrior under his wing, seeing a ton of potential to mold his raw talent into a real formidable fighter.

Sei-Sen is eventually able to convince Jin Judoka to join the Wolf Style Dojo in the weeks after the Tenkaichi Budokai and he begins training with the dojo shortly after, with other new entries such as a young man by the name of Hoshi also entering the fray.

    Character Description[]

    Physical Appearance[]

Master Renji resembles a typical old martial arts sensei, with a grey goatee beard and long white hair in a ponytail. He's a bit shorter than average although this is primarily due to aging. He is almost always seen wearing a red kimono with the kanji for "wolf 狼" on the back, although sometimes wears a simple black undershirt with the same kanji on the front.

    Personality[]

Like a typical martial arts master, Master Renji is a very wise and experienced warrior with tons of insight on the philosophies of battle. He enjoys allowing his students to have their fun, believing a happy life and mind is the key to a fulfilled spirit. He believes heavily in discipline, often putting his students on random journeys and missions in their training to ensure that they never grow complacent. Although not very sentimental, he has tons of admiration of the newer generation and hopes they grow to be better than his own, showing during his speech to Jin Judoka in his own final moments in the Jinryu Saga.

    Goals[]

    MasterRenji

After establishing a legacy for himself and his dojo, Master Renji knows that his time is soon coming to an end due to his advancing age and the increasing number of threats targeting the Z-Fighters. With this in mind, he fully set his goals on training the new generation into continuing the Wolf Style Dojo's story and ensuring the safety of Earth.

    Powers and Techniques[]

    Fighting Style[]

As the Wolf Hermit, Master Renji is the famed inventor of the "Okami Jinsoku-Ryū", the signature fighting style of the Wolf Style Dojo which focuses on the art of reading an opponent and waiting for the right opportunity to strike, favoring quick precise strikes over brute strength. Although not as quick as he once was, his battle intelligence is unrivaled and he can almost always perform the perfect counter to any attack from an opponent.

    Abilities[]

    • Flight
    • Basic Combat
    • Ki Manipulation/Control
    • Ki Sensing
    • Rapid Perception/Analyzation
    • Extreme Endurance
    • Extreme Strength
    • Extreme Speed

    Techniques[]

    • Wolf's Cannon 狼の大砲: A typical ki wave that forms a wolf silhouette behind him. The ki wave cannot be redirected but travels immensely fast and has tons of force behind it.
    • Kenshi Kiai 犬歯闘志: Transfers ki to his limbs. Then, every punch or kick he performs can travel far distances with the power of thousands of tons, producing an echo-like sound with every impact.
    • Hageshī Ken 激しい拳: Produces multiple afterimages that when attacked by a fooled opponent, their own attack will be redirected back to them.
    • Homing Spirit 精神に従う: Surrounds himself with several ki blasts and engages in combat with the opponent as per usual, but the ki blasts gradually randomly fire in the opponent's face until they all run out. This is most commonly used as a distraction technique to gain the upper-hand on a more powerful opponent.
    • Kyūsokuna 急速な: Heavily enhances his own speed to the point where most opponent attacks can be dodged and most of his own attacks are invisible to the eye. Wastes a ton of ki that gradually depletes as the technique is used. Once the technique is deactivated, his heart is strained heavily.

    Trivia[]

    • Renji 廉侍 is a name that means "a pure heart, samurai" in Japanese.
