Masamune/Masamune was a company owned by the brothers Tonji and Jakuto. One half of the business, led by Tonji, was a saké brewing and selling company. His high-quality alcohol was sold in stores called Itteki (一滴) around the world. The other half was a swordsmithing company led by Jakuto. Tonji's side of the business more reliably brought in profits, although Jakuto sold tamahagane katanas to rich buyers every now and then, which easily covered his half of the business' expenses.
History[]
In Age 747, during the events of Chasing Oblivion, one of Tonji's trucks that was transporting expensive saké through the Diablo Desert was ambushed and stolen. This was orchestrated by the man's nephew, Junichi Masamune, who killed the driver and stole all of the saké for his crew (which was comprised of himself, Lychrel, and Yamcha). Soon after, they were found by Wolfe and his Wings. During the confrontation, Junichi was killed by Wolfe's Wolf Fang Fist, and the saké fell into possession of the bandits.
Later on, Tonji Masamune met with Yunwu, the deputy mayor of South City, with the hope that she would be able to find his saké and his missing nephew. She promised to recover the saké in a week's time for the price of 25% of the haul. It was later revealed that she already had the saké, for she was allied with Wolfe, but was going to try to negotiate with the man again in a week to get a better price.
Some days afterwards, Yunwu met with Elijah the samurai. He asked her to find out what Makare was doing in Orange Star City in exchange for a 10% stake in Masamune/Masamune. When Yunwu attempted to negotiate for a 20% stake, the samurai offered her 15%, but no more. She continued to negotiate, which Elijah thought was greatly disrespectful, so he got up to leave. Finally, Yunwu relented, and agreed to the 15% stake. Elijah gave her one week to come up with an answer to his question, or their contract would be void.
Shortly following this, reports came to Yunwu from Daniel Parroda, her contact, that the samurai had been spotted in Orange Star City (which was just north of Cardan, the countryside town where the Iboinoshishi School was located), where they had gotten into a huge fight with members of the Chàoxing Gon. This allowed her to take a 10% stake in Masamune/Masamune until her death a few weeks later, when that portion of the company was returned to Elijah's possession.
Some weeks later, supposedly after the saké had been returned to Tonji, Jakuto, his brother, had stopped by Yunwu's skyscraper to discuss their business dealings. He had also left her usuchu-grade green tea as a gift.
When Yamcha returned to South City near the end of Chasing Oblivion, he noticed that there were posters all around asking for information about Junichi's whereabouts. Feeling guilty, he entered the nearest Itteki, and, without giving the secretary his name, he told her what had happened to Jun. She promised to inform Tonji about his nephew's death.
Near the end of Chasing Oblivion, Yamcha once more stopped a truck hauling saké through the Diablo Desert, but this time he let the man pass without stealing any alcohol from him (which quite pissed off Puar).
As of Age 751, the swordsmithing side of Masamune/Masamune was no longer operating, as Jakuto had grown too old to continue it.
As of Age 752, the Masamune/Masamune estate in Cardan (south of Orange Star City) housed and rehabilitated samurai who had survived the war between Elijah and Makare. Tonji and Elijah assisted Tien and Paik in locating and performing a hit on Hiramogi Higataro.
