Makare (マカレ, Makare) is a human samurai and a former member of the Iboinoshishi School. In Age 738, he became disillusioned with Elijah's leadership of the school and formed Makare's Band, an army of samurai that he planned on using to help him overthrow the daimyo. He is the main antagonist of Spindlerun: The Tale of Yajirobe and a minor character in Chasing Oblivion.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

Makare is a dirty-looking man with long, unwashed black hair and sallow skin. He has brown eyes. He is fairly tall and robustly-built. He tends to slouch. He wears black robes that are somewhat filthy and tattered and wooden sandals. Of course, he keeps his sword Chill of Midnight as well as a wakizashi and dagger with him at all times.

Personality[]

Makare is a duplicitous man of fairly high intellect. He often remarks to Elijah that while Elijah is the better swordsman, he has the better mind. He is ruthless, as seen when he executes his own soldiers for failing to immediately follow a command, but also likes to toy with his opponents, as seen in his first duel with Brian and Yajirobe. While he is a prideful man, he is not above admitting that others are better than him. While this is true for his former classmate Elijah, it's also true of his interactions with Naigo. Makare is a patient man, but he is a man driven by rage. He believes that he should have been given the position of daimyo by his now-deceased master and resents Elijah for being promoted to that role. He thinks very little of how Elijah has run the Iboinoshishi School. With that said, he still loves his master to the point that Elijah is able to exploit him near the end of Spindlerun: The Tale of Yajirobe, by telling him that Yajirobe and Brian knew where their master's grave was located (which was a lie). This was the only reason Makare spared the boys, as he wanted to torture them to find out where that grave was located. He is a highly aware individual, for he figured out that Daniel Parroda ordered the Solipsist Colony monks to be murdered. He dealt with Daniel swiftly and appropriately after he figured it out.

History[]

Chasing Oblivion[]

In chapter 1, Yunwu met with Makare, whom she described as a rapturous and delusional swordsman. The details of their meeting were not revealed in this chapter.

In chapter 3, Yunwu revealed that she had brokered an alliance between the samurai Makare and Naigo. She wanted their army to fight in the upcoming bandit war in the Diablo Desert, but they refused. When she stated she had saved them from the police, they just laughed at her and left, threatening her in the process. She later sent Captain Fortier and a detachment of guards after the two, ordering them to kill the samurai. However, Fortier and his men were cut down by Makare and Naigo.

In chapter 4, Yunwu revealed that she knew Makare was now in Orange Star City. She wanted to nuke the entire city to make sure he was killed. She later thought to herself that while her butler was a capable man, he was nothing compared to Captain Fortier. She cursed Makare for killing him and his men.

In chapter 5, Yunwu met with Elijah the samurai. He asked her to find out what Makare was doing in Orange Star City in exchange for a 10% stake in Masamune/Masamune. She eventually agreed to do this for a 15% stake, though Yunwu was unsure who was the best person to pay for intel on Makare.

In chapter 6, after Yunwu and Ren had breakfast, the deputy mayor received a message from Daniel Parroda, who was her contact in Orange Star City. He told her that Mazuchiru's men had gotten in a huge fight with Makare and Naigo, with the latter two killing all of the Chàoxing Gon in that city. Yunwu ordered him to find a way to weaken Makare and Naigo's forces as well, and Daniel promised to do so before ending their communication.

Spindlerun: The Tale of Yajirobe[]

In chapter 2, Makare met with Naigo on the side of Igaron mountain. Naigo told him that his training in creating ki attacks with the Solipsist Colony was still ongoing, though their constant philosophical debates were draining his patience. Naigo showed him a ki blast, but it wasn't very large. He promised to complete his training with the monks within a few weeks. Then, Launch arrived. Makare told her that Elijah, the Daimyo of the Iboinoshishi School, had begun taking in new students. He put out a hit on the students, as well as Elijah, if she could manage it. Launch agreed to try and then left.

Naigo was annoyed that Makare had not mentioned their alliance with Launch beforehand and also did not believe that she would succeed in her mission. Makare agreed, thinking that she would serve more as a distraction than anything else. Near the end of the chapter, Daniel began to suspect that it had been Makare who had stolen his Dragon Ball, for the man would likely suspect him of sending the Red Ribbon Army to the Solpsist Colony. He would likely retaliate stronger in the coming days, which put Daniel on guard.

At the start of chapter 3, Makare and Naigo sparred on Igaron mountain. Naigo had Makare on the ropes until the samurai led him to a muddy area that hampered his ability to move, allowing Makare to win the duel. Naigo lamented that he had been tricked, but Makare admitted that the man had grown stronger than him and thus that had been a necessary tactical try for Makare to win. Naigo then updated Makare on his ki control training, stating it would only take him one more week to master. He asked Makare about Launch. The other samurai said he had not heard from her yet, but was not worried, for he did not believe that Daniel would have killed her.

Later, when the Iboinoshishi recruits met with Elijah, they demanded to know who had shot him and Nameless Child 1. He told them it was Makare. He had not expected Makare to attack his recruits and promised the four of them that he would not allow the man to hurt them in the future.

That night, Launch called up Makare, but he didn't answer, so she left him a message stating that she had killed Elijah and his five students. She demanded that Makare pay her. The next day, after learning of the deaths of the forty-nine solipsist monks, Naigo called up Makare to tell him what had happened, but first Makare told him that Launch had called him earlier with surprising news. Naigo didn't care and told him that all of the solipsist monks were dead and blamed Daniel for it. Makare asked him if the monks had kept manuscripts for their training sessions, and Naigo said that they did. This was a relief for both of them, as it meant that Naigo would be able to teach himself how to master ki control, although it would take much longer for him to do so without having a teacher guiding him.

Then, Makare ordered all of their samurai to take up residence in the cave in Igaron mountain, as he planned on using them against Elijah (assuming Launch had lied about killing them) in his future assault of the Iboinoshishi School. Naigo was unconvinced that the low-level samurai would be worth using, as Elijah would be able to kill all of them single-handedly. Nevertheless, he agreed to bring their soldiers to that cave when Makare reminded him that Elijah's pupils would surely die to their men. Makare ordered Naigo to dispose of the monks' bodies and then hung up.

In chapter 4, Daniel visited the Solipsist Colony's cave dwelling in Igaron mountain, where Makare, Naigo, and their samurai had taken up residence. He rigged the place with explosives, noting that Makare and Naigo would kill him if they found him. He thought about the fact that he was being forced to pay Makare, and thus fund part of his operation, so that Makare would not kill his brother Mark and destroy their winery.

After one of Makare's men captured Harotu in Orange Star City, Makare appeared. He beheaded the samurai who was holding Harotu after he refused to let him go. Makare introduced himself to the three boys, stating that he was an old friend of Elijah's and that he wanted to replace the man as the daimyo of the Iboinoshishi School, focusing its training on the art of ki control as well as swordsmanship. He also disparaged Elijah's leadership, stating that the previous master of the school had been brash to make Elijah his successor. Makare noted that only Elijah and Kumo were capable of wielding a sword and that all other recruits had dropped out, retired, or been removed from the school, which Makare thought was far too strict. He also revealed to them that Elijah had opened the Iboinoshishi School up three times prior, but no recruits had survived or passed all of the tests any of those times. He told them that he would be taking over the Iboinoshishi School and would be using his army to do so.

Then he revealed his katana to the boys and told them that he was relishing the opportunity to kill them himself. Brian begged to join Makare's army instead. Makare refused. Yajirobe and Brian, using the imprisoned samurai's weapons, attacked Makare while Harotu rolled around on the ground crying. Makare easily disarmed Brian, cutting his arm. He toyed with them for a while before withdrawing and telling them that he would kill them soon, cursing the luck that they were being let off lightly today. The boys did not understand.

Immediately after, Elijah appeared, attacking Makare in a fearsome display of strength and technical prowess. The two samurai lords traded blows, but Elijah clearly dominated his foe. He kicked Makare into a wall, where he crumpled like a ragdoll. The daimyo demanded that the man stay away from his students. Makare mocked them as being taught by an inferior teacher. Elijah revealed that he knew about the solipsist monks teaching Makare (though it had actually been Naigo who they had taught), calling their philosophy delusional and their ki attacks cheap tricks. At that moment, Makare pushed Elijah's blade out of his face (cutting his chin in the process) and ran off. Elijah ordered the boys not to pursue him.

At the start of chapter 5, Makare and Naigo prepared to assault the Iboinoshishi School. Naigo believed that having roughly two hundred thirty samurai would be enough to swarm the place, but Makare believed they would need at least seven hundred to overwhelm Elijah, Kumo, the students, and the attendants. Naigo doubted that there were that many samurai left in the entire world. Makare told him that none of the 143 samurai who had graduated from the Iboinoshishi School in the past were following him now, and those who were still alive were either mercenaries or petty thieves anyways. He was unwilling to hire them to bolster his forces. He promised to get more money from Daniel in order to hire more samurai before assaulting the Iboinoshishi School, leaving Naigo in charge of the group while he was gone.

Later, Elijah explained to his students that he was going to start teaching them how to use a katana, as Makare would be attacking soon. He did not know how long it would take Makare to attack, and so did not know how long their training would go on for. Later on, upon arriving at Daniel's winery, Brian and Yajirobe found it in ruins and on fire. Daniel's body, cut to pieces, was hanging out of a window. There was no sign of Mark. Then, Makare jumped down from the roof, gleeful at the boys' appearance. He drew his sword, ready to duel. The boys were utterly frightened by the man and sprinted back to the school. They were able to outpace Makare.

He nevertheless tracked them back to the school and entered the same porter-gate they had. While Kumo was getting treatment for her wound, Makare appeared and killed her guards. He called her his favorite bitch at the academy, which prompted her to lunge at him. Just then, Naigo fired an energy blast at Kumo, which blew her away, killing her. Pleased, Makare granted him all of northern Cardan for his efforts, though he still demanded that he kill Elijah's students.

Afterwards, Makare screamed for Elijah to show himself so that they could duel, but the daimyo did no such thing, prompting Makare to order Naigo to burn down the entire school. Elijah eventually came out to confront Makare's Band. He demanded to duel with Makare and Makare alone, but the other samurai refused to keep Naigo at bay. Elijah remarked that it had only been their old master who had prevented Elijah from killing Makare in the past. Once more Elijah demanded to duel with Makare, but the other man admitted that he would not win the duel.

At that moment, bloody and battered, Yajirobe appeared from behind, his katana in hand. Naigo kicked him aside. Elijah then declared that only Yajirobe and Brian knew where the old master's grave was (an obvious lie), and if Makare killed them, that secret died with them. Makare was taken aback, for he had loved his old master. He ordered Naigo to take the children prisoner so they could be interrogated. Brian was outraged, but Elijah allowed it to happen. Naigo ordered soldiers to bind both of the children's hands and legs (they had to carry Yajirobe since he had been knocked unconscious) and take them. Then, Makare hit Elijah with the hilt of his katana, but Elijah smiled back at him, refusing to fight. That made Makare irate with anger. He cut Elijah's neck just a little bit, but the daimyo would not stop smiling. Makare left him there in dirt as he and his army retreated to Igaron mountain to interrogate the boys.

In chapter 6, a flashback revealed what happened to Daniel in the previous chapter. In it, he was called up by Makare to discuss some matter in person. He feared that Makare had figured out that it had been him who had killed the solipsist monks. He eventually showed up at Daniel's house in Cardan. When Daniel didn't answer the door (as he was trying to get his little brother out of the house before confronting the samurai), Makare kicked down the door. He accused Daniel of paying the Red Ribbon Army to kill the solipsist monks, as Daniel was the only one rich enough to do so who knew about those monks.

Then, he attacked Daniel, telling the man that he was no longer needed, as Makare now had enough samurai to storm Elijah's school. Daniel dodged the katana until Makare tripped on a power cord, ripping it to pieces, which cut out the lights and started a fire inside the house. Makare sliced open Daniel's chest, but the boxer was able to close the distance and land several good punches. Dropping the katana Makare fell to the floor. Daniel pinned him and raised the katana, prepared to kill Makare. But then the pain in his chest overwhelmed him and he hesitated. That was long enough for Makare to pull his knife out and stick it in Daniel's throat, killing him.

Later, when Yajirobe woke up inside a prison in Igaron mountain, he did not understand why Naigo and Makare had not killed him. Brian told Yajirobe that they had been brought there to be questioned by Makare and Naigo about the location of the grave of Elijah and Makare's master. Naigo later took Brian to the center of the cave, where Makare and several other soldiers were. He was caught in the blast when Daniel's explosives went off, though he was the only samurai to survive it.

As Yajirobe fled the mountain, he ran into Makare at the bottom of it. Half of Makare's face was burnt to a grotesque degree, and his katana was already out. Makare accused him of destroying the cave, but Yajirobe did not know what had happened. Yajirobe tried to walk past him, but Makare attacked him. He knew he would have to deal with the man before returning to the daimyo.

Then, they fought. The duel was fairly even until Yajirobe tried an Iaigiri attack. Makare flipped over him and parried it while in mid-air, which surprised Yajirobe and made him drop his katana. He lost it in the ash and darkness. Then, he was put on the defensive, and Makare landed a deep chest slice, cutting him up good. Makare forced Yajirobe to kneel and give up, congratulating himself for killing all of Elijah's recruits. It was just then that the boy caught a glimpse of his glimmering sword not more than a foot away to his right. Yajirobe asked the man what had caused the explosion. Makare, who also did not know what had happened, grew distraught again, buying Yajirobe precious seconds. He grabbed the blade and was able to parry Makare's execution swing, which greatly surprised the man.

Yajirobe went on the offensive. He had more stamina than Makare, wounded as the samurai lord was, and thus was able to slowly gain an advantage over him. He even nicked him badly in the chin and bruised both of the man's shins. Makare made a wild swing, which Yajirobe parried hard. This caused his katana to go flying. Mercilessly, Yajirobe came down on the man's hand, severing it. Makare screamed and then fled in utter terror. Yajirobe chased him and jumped in the air, coming down on the samurai lord's neck a moment later. Makare's severed head fell to the ground, followed by his body. Later, Yajirobe returned to Elijah and reported on the deaths of Makare, Naigo, and all of Makare's Band.

Trivia[]

  • Makare's katana was stolen from his corpse by Minamogi in Down the Well-Worn Road. Elijah eventually tracked down the man, killed him, and recovered the sword.
