"You represent the deceptiveness of the serpent well, Kyonshi. Your motives have not changed from when we were young. In your arrogance, you think to understand the teachings and warnings of the wise men before us better than themselves, and dishonor them. Your altruism is merely an illusion. You seek power from all this- power to change things to how you think they should be. Power to uproot even the gods." Tale 06 - The Four Masters

Maccha - is a supporting character in the fanga, fan manga, Dragon Ball Z Elsewhere. He is the father of Yunomi, the adopted guardian of Yamcha and Barracks, master of the Wolf Sacred School of martial arts, and former guardian of the Okami village. As such, he is the one responsible for teaching the Wolf Fang Fist technique to Yamcha, though it is later revealed that the technique Yamcha uses is not the full variation.

Appearance[]

Despite his elderly appearance, Maccha possesses a well-built figure, visibly different from those of the Crane and Turtle masters, although he is not as visibly muscled as Muten Roshi's buff transformation. He has gray hair befitting his age, a large mustache, prominent beard, and bares a passing resemblance to Yamcha in terms of how it is styled. He wears the traditional martial arts uniform of the Wolf school, from which Yamcha, and later Barracks' and Yunomi's outfits all derive. His outfit consists of an orange vest over a green shirt, with wristbands matching the color of his shirt, pants matching the color of his vest, and dark boots. Similar to the other sacred schools, this outfit displays the Wolf symbol on the front.

Personality[]

Maccha is shown to be a very serious individual, to the point of near stoicism, and is cool even in the face of danger. He possesses a very strategic mind, able to form plans designed to disrupt the enemy's movement and prevent any more damage, seemingly at a moment's notice. He is very militaristic in his thinking, seeming to view even a one on one duel between two fighters as akin to war.

Maccha is also very much a traditionalist, as he chooses to raise his only daughter to be a lady, not a warrior instead of allowing her to become the heir to the Wolf school. It is because of this mindset that he adopts two orphans, Yamcha and Barracks, into his home to become his successor and future guardian of the village. Maccha has also been described as a man of peerless honor, even by his enemies, as Kyonshi described him when he realized that Maccha had refused to hate his wife, even after realizing her betrayal.

However, he is not above displaying outrage, such as when he realized that Yamcha had long held the ability to project his ki, yet had not recognized combining that ability with the Wolf Fang Fist technique. He is also capable of expressing great pride, such as when he asked Yamcha to display the full extent of his power. Maccha also showed profound regret with regards to his daughter, as when they reunited after he was brought back to Earth for one day, he did not judge her for eventually becoming a fighter (even though she had spent years doing her best to be the ladylike person he wanted her to be), and instead held her with similar pride while showering her with love.

Biography[]

Although not much is known of Maccha's younger years, it is revealed by the Serpent style master, Kyonshi, that the two men have known each other ever since they were chosen to succeed their respective masters. Based on his appearance, it is safe to assume that he is likely around the same age as the Crane master Shen, though he is likely not as old as Master Roshi, who is around 300 years old. What is known is that sometime after he was able to succeed his master, Maccha married a young woman, named Lace, with whom he had a daughter, Yunomi. However, his wife eventually went missing at some point afterward, and presuming her dead, Maccha found and adopted two young orphan boys, intending for one of them to become his successor.

This all came to a climax, however, on a night 19 years before Yamcha's return to the village, when the Wolf village was attacked by the monstrous forces of the Serpent master, Kyonshi. Maccha quickly formulated plans to counter the invasion, strategically having Yamcha act as an attacker on the ground, with Barracks providing cover fire with a bow and arrow from a nearby rooftop. He also has Pu'ar's father and grandfather, Sencha and Tuocha, use their transformation abilities to transform into both himself and Kyonshi, in order to mislead and confuse the enemy forces. When his daughter, Yunomi, begs him to allow her to fight, Maccha refuses, instead demanding that she stay put, and to follow either Yamcha or Barracks' instructions if he does not return.

Later on, as he's surveying the battlefield, Maccha overhears a female voice cry out for help. Rushing to the location of the voice, he discovers a monster attacking a young woman at the site of the Legendary Seal, and kills the creature in order to rescue her. The woman turns out to be Lace, his missing wife, who informs him that she had been held prisoner at Kyonshi's castle for the past few years, and had used his invasion of the village as her means to escape. Before the two can move to a safer area, they're interrupted by the arrival of Kyonshi, who is accompanied by the Crane master, Shen, and Muten Roshi's pupil, Gyu Mao. The two exchange terse words, as Kyonshi tries to recruit Maccha to his cause by pointing out that the four sacred martial arts were derived from one original style, and that their division only serves to dillute the original art.

Maccha calmly rebuffs his rival, arguing that Kyonshi's intentions are not as honorable as he proclaims, and that he only seeks the power of the seal for his own selfish purpose. He declares to Kyonshi that he will not take part in such schemes, leading Kyonshi to give the order for his murder. Standing in front of his wife, Maccha is unable to react as he is stabbed multiple times by Lace. With tears in his eyes, he barely manages to ask her why, before he collapses and dies. It is revealed soon afterward that Maccha's death at the hands of his wife was a part of Kyonshi's plan to break the Legendary Seal, but that his plan had been thwarted by Maccha, as even in death the Wolf master did not surrender his honor. In order to break the seal, it required members from each school to be of one mind.

To do so, the Serpent master recruited Shen and Gyu Mao, with the explicit requirement that they hate Lace. Kyonshi was counting on Maccha to hate Lace as well, once he realized the extent of her betrayal. However, Maccha refused to let go of his love for his wife, even in death, thus inadvertently disrupting Kyonshi's plot. After his death, Maccha was given the option of keeping his body and moving onto the Otherworld. However, upon turning it down, he was instead allowed to forfeit his physical body in order to reside on the planet of female warriors, joining the other masters of the sacred schools.

Catharsis Arc[]

Maccha is later seen in Otherworld, after Yamcha is invited there under the pretense of receiving personal training from the Grand Kai. Although he is turned down by the Grand Kai, Yamcha is given permission to remain in Otherworld for as long as is necessary, in order to expedite the release of Anshin's spirit within him. While training with Goku, Yamcha mentions that his Wolf Fang Fist training was never completed due to his master's death, and the Saiyan proposes that he simply look for his master while he's in Otherworld, so that he can complete his training. King Kai reveals the location of Earth's martial arts masters, and the group soon travel there.

Shortly after arriving, Yamcha manages to track down Maccha, and he tearfully (and comically) greets his former master. Though happy to see his young protege, Maccha inquires as to what he's doing in Otherworld, immediately recognizing that not only does Yamcha possess a living body, but that he is wearing the uniform of the Turtle school. Yamcha quickly informs him of the recent events, both Heiwa's release after the breaking of the seal, and his possession by the spirit of Anshin. Yamcha asks if Maccha knows the location of the other sacred school masters. Maccha informs the group that he does, and asks them to remain where they are while he goes to retrieve them, as the women on the planet have not seen a young male with a body in nearly a century. His plan is quickly dashed, however, as just at that moment, one of the fighters appears nearby and quickly catches sight of Goku and Yamcha, dashing off to inform the other warrior women.

Maccha soon returns with the other masters, among them the unnamed former Crane master, Master Mutaito, Goku's grandfather Son Gohan, and the founder of the four sacred schools, Lord Coffee. Before they can move to a more secluded area, the group is confronted by a mob of female fighters from the nearby town, led by a former acquaintance of Olibu, named Gorga. King Kai angrily informs them that the men are there on official business, and not to interfere with them. After King Kai is able to pacify the group of fighters, Yamcha and the other masters relocate to a nearby area, where Yamcha inquires the masters for any knowledge of the seal and Anshin. Coffee provides him the secret of communing with the spirit, and upon receiving the answer, Yamcha decides that his first step should be reconciliation, both with his master and his fellow pupils. He requests that Maccha complete his training, so that he may master the Wolf Fang Fist and pass it on to the others back on Earth. Maccha accepts, and soon begins retraining Yamcha in the more advanced aspects of the Wolf style, drilling his younger pupil in perfecting the stance, before moving on to refining his technique.

After hours of training, Maccha deems his young protege adequate, and having passed on the secrets of the style, officially proclaims Yamcha as the heir to the Wolf school and its newest master. After seeing Yamcha's true power, Maccha tearfully responds that he is happy to see that his student has surpassed him to such a degree. Maccha then looks on as his protege engages in a one-on-one battle with the Turtle school's strongest student, amazed at the level that Yamcha and Goku fight at. Maccha both chastises and praises his student's performance throughout the fight, and at the climax of their duel, is confused at the outcome. King Kai explains the details of both fighters' history as rivals, and after the two young fighters are taken to a nearby medical facility, Maccha learns of Fortuneteller Baba's ability to return someone to Earth for a single day. He uses this to reunite with his daughter, Yunomi, and pupil Barracks, on Kami's lookout.

Father and daughter tearfully embrace one another, and rather than rebuke her for defying his wishes, Maccha instead shows his acceptance of her decision, by personally passing on the true Wolf Fang Fist to her, as well as Barracks and Yamcha's student, Pigero. At the end of his time there, he returns to the Otherworld, bidding one final farewell to his daughter and pupil.

Power[]

Maccha is a shrewd and cunning fighter, who values the Wolf school's concept of utilizing teamwork in order to defeat a stronger adversary. He was seemingly content to fulfill his duties as guardian of his village, as he did not use his martial arts to seek fame or to test himself against other fighters, unlike that of his contemporaries, the Crane master Shen and the Turtle master, Muten Roshi. He also valued mastery of his technique, rather than relying solely on building up his ki, as such his Wolf Fang Fist technique, while lacking in power compared to that of his student, utilizes far more precise attacks. Maccha is also capable of projecting his ki through the use of his techniques, able to use it to make his Wolf Fang Fist attacks much more lethal. He demonstrated this by being able to cleave a boulder cleanly into four pieces, even though he lacked a physical body after dying. Arguably his most notable combat ability is his strategic mindset, which can be seen in his militaristic approach to combat.

Techniques[]

Ki Sense - being a martial arts master, Maccha is able to sense the ki of his opponents. He was able to use this to sense the movements of the enemy forces invading his village, as well as being able to determine the depths of Yamcha's strength during the latter's training to master the Wolf Fang Fist.

True Wolf Fang Fist - being a master of the Wolf school of martial arts, Maccha has perfected every aspect of the Wolf Fang Fist technique. The user projects their ki into their strikes, turning their physical attacks into sharp strikes capable of cutting their opponent. It is physically unblockable and will cause damage to even an opponent with incredible defense. Though an opponent with a forceful enough ki can rebound the attack(s) back at its user.
