Korin (カリン, Karin) is a cat in Dragon Ball Z: The Forgotten. He is featured in the fourth, fifth, and sixth sagas as well as the special "Forever Alone". He is introduced in the chapter "Blutz Wave".
He is also featured in several other stories, such as Spindlerun: The Tale of Yajirobe, Not So Far, and Cool Cat.
History[]
Cool Cat[]
At the start of this story, Korin's father teleported him from Other World to Earth, instructing him to head to the tower below The Lookout to assume his position. He landed in a prairie close to Korin Tower and proceeded to chase fruit flies and catch a bird. Korin found a man named Jimothy Gaffigan rolling a cinnabun up and down a hill. He did not interact with the man, for just looking at him made Korin feel sleepy, so he fled the scene at once.
Korin ended up in a desert. Soon he had to pee, and once he did, a beanstalk sprouted from where he had urinated. At that moment, Paul McCartney appeared and plucked a bean off the stalk and handed it to Korin. This was the first senzu bean. After Korin declared the senzu bean's name, Paul quipped that its name sounded like something John Lennon would write a song about. This caused Korin to flee as he did not wish to meet John. He continued exploring Earth, even having an encounter with a stripper wherein he ate tuna off of her stomach (and perhaps did other things with her but who knows).
The poor kitty soon encountered Beelzebub, Prince of the Demon Realm. The young demon was sitting under a tree playing on his Nintendo 3DS when Korin came running over to him. Beelzebub splashed him with water from his water bottle, which outraged the cat. Beelzebub offered to sell him sacred water which would make him stronger and wiser for a million zeni. Korin paid for it gladly. When Beelzebub mistook him for a female cat, Korin swiped him in the face, causing the boy to cry. Then, Korin drank the sacred water, but it did not make him feel any stronger. Beelzebub revealed that he had sold Korin tap water before running off gleefully.
Korin chased him down and kicked him good. He asked Beelzebub where Korin Tower was, but the boy did not know as he was not a native. He pointed out a huge tower in the distance, guessing that it could have been that one. After Korin beat him up again for not answering his questions, the boy admitted that the quickest way to the tower was to follow a nearby river flowing west. They walked over to the river together, and most pleased, Korin rewarded Beelzebub with a gift - Sonic ‘06 for the Nintendo Wii. He kicked Beelzebub into the sky when the boy made a face (he was thinking about how his father would only let him play the video game for an hour when he got home).
Soon after, he found a samurai lord named Mitsushige by the river. The man appeared drunk, for he was stumbling around, and he was holding the Power Pole. He was shocked that Korin was a cat. The daimyo begged for Korin not to kill him, swearing that it wasn't his fault. Whatever "it" was, he refused to explain. He fainted when Korin raised a claw, falling face first into the river, which carried him off. He drowned moments later.
Korin picked up the Power Pole, not sure what it was, but he soon learned how to make it extend and retract. He got stuck about three miles in the air for a while because he was scared of heights and could not reliably make the pole shrink due to his shaking hands. Before long, he fell sideways, still clutching onto the pole. He deftly stopped his momentum by sticking the end of the pole into the ground and hopping off it just as it hit the ground, which saved his life.
He immediately realized that he had landed at the base of Korin Tower. Members of the Karinga tribe watched him fall from the sky. A shaman ran up to him and thought that he had been sent to them by their gods to save them from Shallot and the Makyans who had been killing his people, abducting their women, and burning their lands. He had even called in a samurai army to stop them, but the Makyans had slaughtered every last one of them. He told the kitty that the demons were currently lairing at the top of the tower, and Korin agreed to climb up there and deal with them. Just then, a frog on a unicycle appeared and accidentally ran over the shaman, killing him, which made Korin about 1% sad.
Korin climbed the tower in record speed, finding the demons at the top. They were playing poker, smoking cigars, and drinking pineapple vodka. He confronted them, telling them that he was going to kill them all. Angered, their leader, Shallot, got to his feet. He was drunk, so he threw his baby boy Garlic off the tower. He and his Makyan warriors surrounded Korin. Shallot refused to stop killing people, so Korin attacked his men with his Power Pole, killing all but one of them. The final remaining lackey stepped forward to face off against Korin. The kitty swiped him a few times with his claws, and the Makyan sadly died, his body falling off the tower.
Then, Korin and Shallot dueled. It was not an even fight; Korin beat up Shallot without taking a hit, using both his claws and his Power Pole to critically damage the Makyan. Once the Makyan lord was done for, Korin kicked him off the tower, and he was too weak to fly, so he splattered to bloody bits on the ground below.
Afterwards, Korin got rid of the demons' things, and he planted the senzu bean in a small pot of soil. He went looking for some catnip, but only managed to find a Jenna Haze legacy fleshlight which he put to good use later that night.
Spindlerun: The Tale of Yajirobe[]
In Age 753, Yajirobe found the one-star Dragon Ball in the bottom of a pond. This ball was what led him to meeting Goku and getting involved in several quests with the boy, culminating in Yajirobe ending up living on Korin Tower with Korin himself. It was after Yajirobe came to live there that Korin asked him why he wasn't training like Tien, Yamcha, Krillin, and Chiaotzu were. He goaded Yajirobe by saying that the four of them were getting stronger than him by training for the next World Martial Arts Tournament. Korin secretly confided to Yajirobe that he was the strongest of the five (though if he was lying was debatable). He also mentioned the Ƶ500,000 cash prize. Yajirobe agreed to enter the tournament, but first he wanted to take a nap.
In chapter 7, Yajirobe decided to finally start training for the next World Martial Arts Tournament, as Korin's words of encouragement and the promise of a huge zeni payload in the previous chapter had inspired him. He felt uncomfortable training around Tien, Krillin, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu, however, so he decided to leave Korin Tower to train somewhere else. Korin confronted him before he left and thought he should take Yamcha with him in order to have someone to spar with. Yajirobe stated that he would rather fight King Piccolo than train with Yamcha.
Despite Korin's pestering, Yajirobe refused to change his mind. He jumped over the railing and made his way back down to ground level. Korin went over to Yamcha and told him that Yajirobe had agreed to train with him, and commanded Yamcha meet up with him at the bottom of Korin Tower immediately. Yamcha frantically ran to get his gym bag, said goodbye to Krillin, Tien, and Chiaotzu, and then jumped down Korin Tower to find Yajirobe. Later, when Yamcha met up with Yajirobe, he said it had been Korin's idea to have the two of them train together.
Dragon Ball Z: The Forgotten[]
Planet Earth Saga[]
Korin, in The Forgotten, was a major supporting character. He was shown several times, mostly insulting Yajirobe or giving Ledas senzu beans. Notably, he protected Verlate's box from Ledas' curious fingers in this saga.
Reunion Saga[]
Goku and Guva went to Korin Tower to get Senzu Beans at the start of this saga, but they quickly found out that Korin didn't have any to spare. Once again, he protected Korin's box from a curious person's prying fingers; in this case, it was Guva's. In the final chapter, after tasking Yajirobe with giving Goku newly grown Senzu Beans, he threw Verlate's box in Yajirobe's car. Yajirobe did not see him do it, however.
Forever Alone[]
Korin was seen in the last chapter of this special in a flashback to when he was young. He found Verlate's box on Earth in a desert (while looking for his lost ball of yarn) and was sucked into the mind prison. There, he met Verlate and taught her about riddles. He also told her about how she could potentially get out of the mind prison if another being were to enter her box. Then, he was allowed to leave by the former Legate, as she had grown to have great respect for the cat during the short time they knew each other.
Fulfillment Saga[]
When Ledas returned Yajirobe to Korin Tower, Korin greeted the boy. He told Ledas that he had to keep the mind prison from then on, as the good kitty would not be able to sleep with the thought of the imprisoned Benefactor so near to him. He also refused to train Ledas, because he had nothing he could teach the boy. Korin was also seen in the finale montage, when he hit Yajirobe over the head with his walking stick after the two of them had some unknown dispute.
Dragon Ball: Heart of the Dragon[]
West City Saga[]
On June 3rd, Age 774, Ledas flew up to Korin Tower, finding Korin and Yajirobe engaged in a fierce karaoke battle. They were singing "The Bitch Song" by Bowling for Soup when Ledas surprised them with his presence, singing the first line of the chorus (not very well). Ledas gave them each an extra large pizza (Hawaiian for Yajirobe; watermelon and anchovies for Korin). They thanked him and ran to the table, fighting over first dibs.
Ledas asked if there were any senzu beans left. Korin said there should be four, but the boy found only two on the senzu plant. Yajirobe had stolen two a few days ago, which caused Korin to smack him upside the head. Ledas was happy to at least have two. He quickly ate one, restoring his health, and asked Korin when the next batch would be ready. Korin said it'd be a few weeks at least. Ledas promised to be more careful while sparring with Vegeta. He prepared to leave when Korin asked him to judge their singing to determine who would win their latest karaoke competition. Yajirobe turned on "The Great Pretender" and began singing along. Ledas didn't know what to say, as the samurai wasn't exactly hitting the notes.
On July 3rd, Ryori, Ledas, Yajirobe, and Korin played hot pepper poker (whoever loses a hand or fold pre-flop has to eat a hot pepper (either serranos, tabascos, or habaneros)) on Korin Tower. Korin put in a bet pre-flop, causing Yajirobe and Ledas to fold and eat serranos. The fat samurai was in agony from the spice. Ledas laughed and laughed, though he too ate a pepper.
Slick[]
In this story, Korin decided to go to Central City to buy a new cat bed. His old one had been accidentally destroyed by Yajirobe's katana at some point before the start of this story. Korin went to a shop called Just Kitten where he bought the most expensive cat bed. At first, he haggled with the store owner, whom he named Bobo in his head, offering the man three senzu beans for a bed worth 60,000 zeni. The man was unwilling to make this trade until Korin showed him how the beans could heal any injury. Then, the man made the trade with Korin and Korin left the shop. Additionally, Bobo had been running an illegal catnip operation in the back of his shop, and Korin swiped a vial of the stuff off of Bobo's body sometime during their bargaining. Bobo only realized this after Korin left the shop. Korin then walked to the outskirts of the city and waited there until Yajirobe came to pick him up in a hovercar and take him home.
Bean Daddy[]
In this story, Yajirobe went to Bulma's birthday party in Age 775 without telling Korin.
Not So Far[]
In Age 775, Korin, Yajirobe, and Ledas got together on Korin Tower to play poker. During the poker game, Korin told them a story about how several hundred years ago, he had lived in the court of a certain Emperor Chaoko, where he had met a beautiful prized cat called Lady Myobu, who was the Fifth Rank in the entire kingdom. He then recounted the slick ideas he had had to make her his girlfriend: taking a bath, buying himself a fancy purple collar, and trimming his claws. However, he had scared her when he had gone up to her to introduce himself (as the fine lady had slept with her eyes open, and he had woken her rudely). Thus, the emperor had banished Korin to Dog Island. Ledas was quite entertained by this story, though Yajirobe cared not for it, and grew increasingly impatient, as he had heard the tale several times before.
Korin continued his story nonetheless, telling them about how eventually Lady Myobu had been married to some tomcat who had been promoted to the Eighth Rank in the kingdom. While Korin lamented the cruelty of his fate, he revealed that the tomcat had been named Nir, a name which Ledas thought was way past cool. He then told them about how he had crashed Nir and Myobu's wedding, ruining it horribly by blowing up their cake with some firecrackers he had stolen from a mutt on Dog Island. Nir had run out of the building screaming, disgracing himself and ruining any chance of him marrying Lady Myobu (and losing his Eighth Rank). However, before Korin had been able to present himself to her, Emperor Chaoko had wheeled out a big fat black-and-white kitty named Ishmael and married her to him mere minutes later. It was a horribly sad tale.
Then, the wise kitty demanded Ledas tell them a story, or he would have to make them dinner. As the boy was not so brilliant a cook, he agreed. At first, Korin pressed him to tell them a love story as he had, but Ledas refused. Instead, he told them a story about his father taking him to the royal city zoo back on Planet Vegeta just after he had turned four years old. His father had found a girl his age to bring along for a playdate of sorts (Ledas swore he didn't remember her name). There, they had borne witness to a Sanu (an animal not unlike a saber-tooth cat) ripping off a trainer's arm as he had tried to feed it meat on a stick. Thus concluded Ledas' legendary story. Korin and Yajirobe were barely impressed.
However, it was then Yajirobe's turn to tell a story, and as he had gone all-in on that particular hand, he was at risk of busting before getting to tell his tale. The other two made him tell it before dealing the cards. Yajirobe told them a story about how, shortly after leaving the Iboinoshishi Samurai School, he had hunted a rather ill-tempered wild boar, cutting its head off and slow-roasting it over a fire. Then, Ledas busted Yajirobe with a pair of kings. While it was not shown if Korin or Ledas won the poker match, it would be safer to assume the former got the better of the latter.
Later, the three of them had a nice dinner of roasted wild boar to celebrate. After dinner, and after Ledas had flown off back to West City, Yajirobe caught Korin on the counter, eating the last bits of boar meat. Using a broomstick, the samurai shooed the senbyō away, though there was no longer any meat left, which saddened Yajirobe somewhat.
Techniques[]
Trivia[]
- Korin purposefully threw Verlate's mind prison into the back of Yajirobe's hover car after commanding the samurai to go deliver senzu beans to Goku and the Z Fighters. He surely did this as he would have known that it would open and suck in The Benefactor when Yajirobe arrived at his destination.
- Korin's theme is The Kitty Cat Dance.
