Koicharu Mazuchiru (マズチル•コイチャル, Mazuchiru Koicharu) is a human who operates a large yakuza gang from South City to Orange Star City. Using his gang's superior weaponry, technology, and numbers, he has tried to gain a foothold in the Diablo Desert's drug trade to boost his profits, power, and influence over the region. He is a major character in Chasing Oblivion.
Overview[]
Appearance[]
Mazuchiru is a man of medium build and height. He is clean-shaven, has pale skin, and his arms and chest are covered in tattoos of various mythical creatures (particularly dragons). His eyes are brown, and his hair is black and spiky enough to have been described as looking like a crown of daggers. He tends to wear a black suit, a crimson tie, white gloves, and dark sunglasses at all times. Yamcha also described his perfume as overwhelming.
Personality[]
Mazuchiru is a man of few words. He acts very deliberately, rarely betraying emotion or desire in front of others. He is one of the few people who is a match for Yunwu at the negotiation table. When he threatens someone, he never bluffs. While others see him as impatient, he would probably describe himself as decisive. When Rheems refuses to kill Wolfe, for example, Mazuchiru quickly and calmly slits his throat without a second thought. He is quite passive-aggressive, as seen in his conversation with Colonel Violet in chapter 7 of Chasing Oblivion, in which he makes some snide comments about the mayor of South City not answering his calls. His greed is not to be underestimated, though he rarely talks about his pursuit of wealth and power, instead acting towards those ends with the help of his gang. He does not forgive easily, as seen when he attacks Wolfe and his Wings in chapter 6 of Chasing Oblivion because they stole money from him in chapter 2. He is swift and brutal with his dispensing of justice, and does not take slights in front of his soldiers. When the mayor calls him a little cuck bitch in chapter 8, he immediately shoots the man, despite knowing that he and his yakuza are surrounded by a much larger force of Children of Chaos and are likely not to get out of that firefight with their lives.
History[]
Chasing Oblivion[]
In chapter 1, Mazuchiru met with Yunwu, the deputy mayor of South City. He demanded she assassinate a certain very important person who was not named in this chapter. When she expressed uncertainty in agreeing to that request, he threatened to reveal her secrets to the mayor, to which she retorted that if he did, she would reveal details of his Yakuza operations to the public. Nevertheless, she eventually agreed to hire a team to assassinate the unnamed individual, so Mazuchiru left. Later on, when Colonel Violet met with the mayor of South City, she told him "Mazuchiru sends his regards", implying that he was the one who had sent them the package of cocaine.
In chapter 2, Yunwu told Wolfe that she would need him to lead an assassination mission on King Furry's Captain of the Guard in the House of the Blue Lotus in South City in three days time. When Wolfe questioned her about this, Yunwu stated that she could not go against Mazuchiru yet, as he could reveal her corruption to the mayor.
In chapter 3, Yunwu attempted to hire Mercenary Tao to assassinate Mazuchiru. She later met with the man inside her tower. Mazuchiru asked Yunwu if King Furry's Captain of the Guard had been killed yet. She told him he had not, but that he would be dying later that day. Then, Yunwu requested the services of 500 of his yakuza soldiers for the upcoming bandit war. He agreed, though he showed some surprise that she had soured on Wolfe. She gave him thirty million zeni (taken from Wolfe's stores) to pay for them. Mazuchiru promised his yakuza would help her take over the Diablo Desert in the near future.
In chapter 4, the yakuza in the limo took Yamcha and Rheems to Koicharu Mazuchiru in an abandoned parking lot where he questioned the bandits for a short while about Wolfe's recent financial boon. When the two denied any knowledge about where the bandit leader had gotten all the new money from (he had taken it in a battle against the yakuza, of course), Mazuchiru relented. He then took Yamcha, Rheems, his personal chef Jiro, and his guards to see a Noh play. Afterwards, he asked the bandits what they thought of the play, but neither one of them had understood it (though of course they would never say that to Mazuchiru's face).
Many yakuza later attended a sushi dinner with Mazuchiru, Yamcha, and Rheems. They were served fresh sushi by Jiro. During the dinner, Mazuchiru asked Rheems and Yamcha to kill Wolfe. When Rheems refused, Mazuchiru came up behind him and cut his throat with a large knife, killing the fox man. His yakuza guards did not react to Rheems' death. Yamcha, making sure not to let his sushi spoil at Jiro's behest, eventually agreed to kill Wolfe if it meant he would be spared.
In chapter 5, Yamcha used a recipe he had gotten from Jiro to make the finest steaks Wolfe and his Wings had ever tasted. Afterwards, Yamcha thought to himself that Jiro would have been proud to serve his food to Mazuchiru even. Later, when Snead met with Yunwu, she assured him that Mazuchiru and his men would arrive in Diablo Desert to strengthen Wolfe's forces the following day. Later, when Yunwu met with Mazuchiru's representative, she was told that Mazuchiru was already on his way to Diablo Desert, so he had been unable to make the meeting. This incensed Yunwu, as this had been the last time she thought she would see him before murdering him.
In chapter 6, Yunwu and one of her attendants discussed Mazuchiru's loyalties, the latter noting that Hasky was trailing the yakuza. Yunwu ordered her to tell Hasky that she was to get visual confirmation that Mazuchiru and his men were heading to Wolfe's elite hideout. Later, Yunwu told the mayor that she had a stake in Mazuchiru's Katachi Saru sushi chain, which was how she had been able to pay for Gero's ten billion zeni infinite energy device.
Later, after the battle between Wolfe's Wings and the Night Snakes, Mazuchiru and his remaining Chàoxing Gon members, their numbers having been reduced from the fight against Makare and Naigo, appeared before Yamcha, Wolfe, and the rest of the survivors. After telling the Wings that he knew they were the ones who had killed his men several weeks ago and stolen billions of zeni they had hidden in the desert, he shot one bandit, his men attacking the remainder of them soon after. A huge battle then ensued, though most of it was not seen, as Yamcha fled before he could be butchered like the rest of the Wings. Wolfe managed to shoot Mazuchiru three times, but his bulletproof vest saved him.
In chapter 7, Wolfe remembered how his eagle had saved him from Mazuchiru after the latter's gang had ambushed him. The raptor had torn out Mazuchiru's eye, giving Wolfe and his Wings some time to flee. Some time later, when he walked through Bonetown, the mayor thought about how Mazuchiru had rid the desert of bandits on Yunwu's orders, and how cruel fate had been to take the woman from the world before she had gotten to see her plan realized. That night, Mazuchiru met with Colonel Violet in Bonetown. He informed her of Yunwu's death, though she barely feigned sympathy. He asked her who the mayor would replace her with, but Violet refused to give him a definitive answer. He also told her that Yunwu had promised him Diablo Desert, but Violet was not in a position to actually do that. She told him that he would be rewarded handsomely, but could not specify how. Mazuchiru once again told her that he wanted Diablo Desert, as he thought he had earned it through eradicating the entire region of bandits. Then, he departed.
In chapter 8, after Violet found the mayor hitting baseballs behind the Bonetown hotel, she alerted him that Mazuchiru was on his way to discuss becoming the new deputy mayor. The mayor grew irate at that, stating he would never allow Mazuchiru to become deputy mayor. Later on, the mayor asked her when Mazuchiru was arriving, and she told him within an hour or two, and that he would be bringing several associates with him with the hope of setting up base in Bonetown. During their conversation, she pressed him about what to do with Mazuchiru. The mayor demanded that she gather up the Children of Chaos and ready them to meet with Mazuchiru in the main street, with the whole town as their witness.
Later, when Mazuchiru and his forces arrived, Violet and her men met them on the outskirts of Bonetown, where she demanded that if the yakuza wanted to enter they leave their weapons in their hovercars. This outraged Mazuchiru, although Violet allowed his yakuza to unload his supplies and slaves while they waited for the mayor to appear. She ordered Cassian and the rest of her soldiers to inspect Mazuchiru's men, making sure none of them were carrying weapons, but they were unable to complete this check before the mayor showed up.
Contradicting Violet, Nathaniel told the groups that they would discuss the terms of their partnership right there in the open, not inside the hotel. Then, he insulted Mazuchiru, causing the yakuza boss to open fire, hitting him. The Children of Chaos retaliated, and so did Mazuchiru's men, causing a huge firefight to erupt between the groups. The Chàoxing Gon were significantly outnumbered, and thus the battle soon turned against them. Mazuchiru himself was forced to flee, though Violet shot him three times - twice in the arm, and once in the side, below the kidney. His men swarmed around him to protect him, eventually loading him into a hovercar to flee. Indeed, only Mazuchiru and his driver of the Chàoxing Gon were able to flee that day, with the rest of his entourage being butchered by the Children of Chaos.
Nineteen Assassins[]
In the first scene of chapter 3, Violet, Carmichael, and Takebashi snuck into the Goldfish Casino where Mazuchiru supposedly was staying. Takebashi led them through the whores' tunnel to Mazuchiru's room. Carmichael found a man guarding Mazuchiru's door, knifing him before he could raise an alarm. Noticing Mazuchiru unconscious in a bed inside, Violet ordered everyone back into the tunnel. After Takebashi confirmed Higataro and Sugoro were running the gang right now, she decided to spare him, as she'd need his help to kill them. After they left, Violet could hardly contain her tears. She looked upon Mazuchiru, who lay on a bed gaunt and pale, hooked up IV machines and other contraptions. He was in a coma. Violet knew it had been from the gunfight in Bonetown. After ranting to the sleeping man how she had relived that gunfight in Bonetown in her mind countless times since they'd last seen each other, she plunged a knife into his heart, killing him.
Trivia[]
- Despite Nineteen Assassins taking place almost 5 years after the shootout in Bonetown in chapter 8 of Chasing Oblivion, no word of Mazuchiru having fallen into a permanent coma following the wounds he took in that battle were ever released to the public until Violet found him in chapter 3 of the story.
