Jakuto Masamune (正宗•じゃくと, Masamune Jakuto) is a human. He is the brother of Tonji Masamune. Renowned for his swordsmithing, he has forged some of the legendary swords in the history of the world, such as Elijah's katana, Makare's katana, Naigo's wakizashi, Kumo's katana , Yajirobe's katana, Brian's katana, and Harotu's katana. He ran one half of the Masamune/Masamune business (his brother Tonji ran the other half, which was a saké brewing and selling business), though by Age 751, he had retired while his brother continued to operate his half of the business for years to come.
Overview[]
Appearance[]
Jakuto is an older man as of Down the Well-Worn Road. He has white hair and blue eyes, though his eyes are described as glossing over, indicating he may be losing his sight. He had fat, stubby fingers and a wispy white beard. Jakuto is a large man, being both tall and portly. He wears simple robes and sandals most of the time.
Personality[]
Jakuto is a perfectionist in terms of his craft, but a rather messy individual in his home. His house is piled high with scrolls, unwashed dishes, and unread mail. He is usually a warm-hearted person, though he is prone to outbursts if he gets annoyed or feels like he is being disrespected. Additionally, he greatly romanticizes the past, as seen when he tells Elijah that the daimyo would have stood no chance against any of the legendary samurai lords of the past, thinking that they were far more advanced warriors than anyone in recent times (whether or not this was true is unknown, but he was assuming it to be). He can somewhat disrespectful and blunt of people younger than him, and is dismissive of younger people in general, not trusting them to be on his level. He trained several swordsmiths but never allowed any to replace him in the Masamune/Masamune business once he retired. He is the less jovial of the Masamune brothers.
History[]
Chasing Oblivion[]
In chapter 6, one of Yunwu's attendants told her that Jakuto Masamune, the brother of Tonji Masamune, had stopped by to discuss their business dealings. He had left her usuchu-grade green tea as a gift.
Down the Well-Worn Road[]
In this story, Elijah went to see Jakuto Masamune, the man who forged his katana, Clearsight. They reminisced briefly about how Jakuto had forged the sword for Elijah many years ago. He mentioned that twelve smiths had assisted him in the creation of the blade (mostly crafting the hilt and scabbard). Jakuto had been slightly annoyed, after completing it, that his brother Tonji had not cared about that beautiful blade at all. He told Elijah that his katana had been based on a katana that had once been owned by the samurai general Ahakine.
The old man also told him that the samurai lords of old were legendary warriors whom Elijah himself would have had no chance against. The daimyo revealed to Jakuto that only one of his samurai students had graduated from the Iboinoshishi samurai school, even though the man had forged three blades. He did not want to talk about what had happened, and the swordsmith did not press him on the matter. The daimyo instead asked the man if he knew where Makare's katana had gone, reminding him that one of his pupils had killed Makare in a duel in the past, but his sword had disappeared by the time Elijah had gone to see the body. They mused over the fact that Makare had named his blade Chill of Midnight and had stripped it of its ornamentation, which offended them both.
Then, the old man brought up Minamogi, a samurai recruit who had been expelled from the Iboinoshishi School when Makare and Elijah had been recruits there. Afterwards, Minamogi had stolen a katana and captured one of Jakuto's swordsmiths, torturing him for information on how to forge a tamahagane steel katana. Jakuto revealed that Minamogi had still not given up his desire to become a samurai and had been boasting in recent months that he had Makare's blade. As to if that was true or not, Jakuto did not know. The false samurai was holed up in a cave at the base of a mountain due east of the Masamune forge.
Jakuto cautioned Elijah not to go there during the day because Minamogi had several guards, some of whom used guns. As Elijah prepared to leave, he thought sadly that it was unlikely he would ever see Jakuto again, as the man was quite old.
Trivia[]
- Jakuto was based on Gorō Nyūdō Masamune, the greatest swordsmith in Japan's history.
