This article, Grand Kaioken (Imperial Alterverse), is the property of ImperialWrath.

"There is indeed a plateau you can hit in power growth. We hit it as we raced to catch up to you Saiyans and Piccolo. We've had to rely on the Kaioken since we aren't capable of becoming Super Saiyans. We thought that just gravity training by itself would be the key, but the human body has limits too, that can't be surpassed by just physical training. But thanks to the Yardrats, we were able to figure out a better way. It's by training our ki and bodies, that's why our Kaioken surpasses Goku's, and why we're strong enough to rival Super Saiyans!" Yamcha in The Strength of Humanity

Grand Kaioken (Gouki Kaio-ken) - is an advanced variation of the Kaioken technique that is significantly stronger previous versions of the Kaioken (x20), though it generally provides a x50 multiplier. This can give the user enough power to equal that of a Super Saiyan. This can be achieved by a multitude of ways, or a combination of such.

Overview[]

Like previous iterations of the technique, the Grand Kaioken provides an increase to strength, speed, senses, and base power level. However, the technique also causes an equally increased amount of strain to the user's body as well. In order to help mitigate this damage, the user has to specifically train their body in order to handle the strain and contain the spikes of power. There are multiple ways that this technique can be achieved, the first of which is by training the user's body in extreme gravity levels of up to x500. Through the use of gravity training, the wielder's body can be conditioned to withstand the stress caused by the technique, enabling them to use it for lengthy amount of time.

However, training in such extreme gravity is incredibly difficult for most beings to achieve, as x500gs is above the natural limit that beings like Humans, and even Saiyans, can withstand. Though Namekians like Piccolo are able to achieve this technique through this method, due in large part to their regenerative capabilities, as the Namekian warriors Kagyu, Maima, and Tsumuri all push themselves to wield this technique during their training on Namek in Dragon Ball Oblivion. Another method used to achieve this technique, is through advanced ki mastery such as spirit control training. This method is used by Yamcha, Krillin, Tien and Chiaotzu during their year of training on planet Yardrat in the Dragon Ball Redux story line.

While training on the planet, Tien reveals that both he and Chiaotzu were able to complete learning the Kaioken during the last few months that they remained on King Kaio's planet while waiting to be wished back to life, with Tien being able to use it safely to x4 and Chiaotzu only able to use it at x2. This surprises both Krillin and Yamcha, with Yamcha stating that he had only just grasped the basics of the technique prior to being wished back, but had gotten sidetracked in fully learning it due to re-acclimating to his old life. It is the Yardrat who is assigned to train them, that helps both Krillin and Yamcha fully learn the technique, though the group laments that the human body is so limited in withstanding high levels of gravity. The Yardrat also informs them that as the Kaioken is not a transformation, but in fact a technique that is centered on being able to manipulate one's ki, mastering the ability to control their ki would yield the greatest benefits to this technique. Taking these words to heart, the humans focus their attention exclusively on mastering spirit control, learning to not only use it to boost their existing techniques, but also learning new skills as well.

It is Tien who is the first to achieve this technique, with Krillin and Yamcha doing so a day or so afterward. Chiaotzu initially believes he's unable to use it after several failed attempts, but with help from their Yardrat teacher, discovers that he is able to use the technique in conjunction with the gigantification technique. After their return to Earth, the Z-warriors eventually reunite, and the human fighters are able to display the fruits of their training by using the Grand Kaioken.

Appearance[]

The Grand Kaioken displays some similarities to the basic Kaioken in appearance, only with some subtle differences. The primary one being is that the user's aura is generally a bit larger than the normal Kaioken, reflecting the degree of power that the user's body is putting out. Another key difference in appearance is that while the regular Kaioken displays a crimson aura of ki surrounding the user, the Grand Kaioken keeps the appearance of the user's normal translucent aura, except with a crimson outline of ki surrounding the aura.

Usage and Power[]

Dragon Ball Super: The Lone Wolf Saga[]

The power of the Grand Kaioken is equivalent to that of the Super Saiyan transformation, boosting the user's base ki x50. However, like its more basic version, the technique causes a great deal of strain on the user's body, though to a much greater degree than the basic Kaioken, or even its x20 variant. This strain can be countered through extensive training under high levels of gravity, as shown by Goku during his training while traveling to Namek. Though the benefits from this method are limited due to the Human and Saiyan body's natural limitations under gravity. The only beings shown capable of obtaining the technique through this method are the Namekians, due to their regenerative capabilities. In Dragon Ball Oblivion, after learning this technique, the four Namekian warriors, Kagyu, Maima, Tsumuri and Cargot, are able to fight on par with the likes of Bojack and his Galaxy soldiers. This technique can also be augmented by those who have their potential unlocked, or when used by Super Namekians, as shown by Cargot, who is discovered to possess the latent power of a Super Namekian during his training with the Sage of Sion.

Dragon Ball Rebirth: Rise of the Makaioshin[]

In Dragon Ball Rebirth, the human Z-fighters are shown able to accomplish great feats through the use of this technique, particularly after completing their training on planet Yardrat. Both Piccolo and Vegeta note that they've actually managed to surpass Frieza's power on Namek, during their fights against Androids #20, #19, #13, #14, and #15, built by doctors Gero and Kochin. While Tenshinhan, Krillin and Yamcha are shown able to defeat their respective opponents using this technique, they are later shown to not be on par with Super Saiyan Vegeta or Androids #17 & #18, as they are defeated by the latter duo in a much easier fashion than #18 had defeated Vegeta. However, using this technique for a lengthy period of time still takes a toll on the body, even with advanced ki control, which is exposed during the Z-fighters battle against the Cell Jrs. This can only be countered by prolonged training under high levels of gravity, which Krillin, Yamcha, Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu are able to utilize during the seven years of peace after Cell's defeat.
