Charles (チャールズ, Chāruzu) is a Human featured in Nineteen Assassins. He's a retired member of the Red Ribbon Army who moved to the island of Akki to become a lighthouse operator. He's a major POV character in Nineteen Assassins.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

Charles is an older man with grey hair and bright blue eyes. He's a little taller than the average man, well-built for his age. He's quite tan from working on the Akki docks. He primarily wears a blue-and-white uniform and a blue hat denoting him as the lighthouse attendant. He maintains a well-trimmed mustache while shaving the rest of his face.

Personality[]

Charles is an introverted, socially anxious man. He prefers to stay in his lighthouse for the most part. He dislikes interacting with most people. He only enjoys Jared's company, and even then, does not like it when Jared invites him over if there are other people around. Charles is a devout Buddhist, though he struggles with following the religion as he goes through the story because he has trouble detaching himself from emotion and professing eternal compassion for all beings. He struggles with being extremely judgmental of all those around him. He tends to get a lot more reckless when drunk. Charles is fairly manic even when sober. He feels immense guilt for abandoning his daughter Violet after she joined the Red Ribbon Army. It's implied that after he did that, he had a mental breakdown and became a Buddhist. Charles has a hero complex as seen when he fights Alabastian after the latter suggests bombing Akki (and killing all of its citizens) to kill the Makyan king Togarashi.

History[]

Nineteen Assassins[]

In the fifth scene of chapter 1, Charles ate lunch and meditated from his lighthouse on Akki. Amongst manic Buddhist thoughts, he mused about how people had been going missing semi-frequently in Pulang (the only town on Akki), wondering what or who had killed them. Around noon, he collected the paper from the front porch, reading about another man who had gone missing. He assumed it was demons, as someone seemed to go missing every three months or so. He was paranoid about the demonic skinchangers who supposedly resided in the forest outside of town, thinking his friend Jared had told him many stories about them. He meditated again to quell his fear of the skinchangers coming after him.

In the second scene of chapter 2, Charles decided to meet Jared on his yacht. Before going, he went to a shop to buy whiskey and taffy. Charles noted that Jared and his team were waging war against the skinchangers demons who seemingly infested Akki, though he knew little about their mission. Charles met Jared on the beach. They took a jet ski to the yacht. There, they met General Silver, who led them inside. Glase was in there. Charles had never met her before. Alabastian told him that Glase was his partner in their quest to kill the elusive King of Nowhere. The group drank together, discussing the Negative Utilitarianism League, which sought to kill all life to eliminate suffering, a concept not far removed from Charles' Buddhist beliefs. Silver thought they were evil. They discussed Buddhism, with Jared thinking that samsara was conceptually evil, irking Charles.

Silver told Charles he had previously worked in the Red Ribbon Army, which seemed to disturb Charles. Glase told them Eugen was in place, indicating that the plan against the Rebel King of Nowhere was now set in motion. Jared asked if Charles wanted to watch them take the king out, as they had hired assassins (from the school of the White Tigers) to do so. Glase admitted the king was an alien of some sort. She said the aliens had lived in the region for a while, though they had mainly kept to themselves until only a few months ago when they had started killing people every now and then. Jared thought they were eating their prey. Silver believed they were using the victims for blood sacrifices. Jared noted that the Rebel King of Nowhere was fighting his own kind as well, which was pissing everyone off. They were only targeting him because he was attacking everyone, humans and aliens, breaking the supposed neutrality the sides had maintained beforehand. Jared said that previously, many more of these aliens had lived on Earth, but as of now, only the tribe on Akki seemed to remain. In-fighting had reduced their numbers significantly. Charles agreed to accompany them to watch the Rebel King of Nowhere's demise.

In the third scene, the White Tigers met Silver, Glase, Eugen, Alabastian, and Charles on the Red Sea three miles north of Akki. Thereafter, the NRRA officers took them to the southern tip of the island, known as Demon's Point.

In the first scene of chapter 4, Charles met with Tights, inspecting her ship as he had never seen her in Akki before. She wasn't happy he had sequestered her for another inspection after the Akki navy had already checked her boat. She told him she had called yesterday to say she was coming to the island to interview the locals in regards to her next novel. He wasn't pleased with that, confiscating her notepad and pen. She wasn't happy, but after he let her go, she went on her way.

Soon after, Jared called him, asking him to meet him on the yacht. Charles didn't want to go, but Jared told him that it was urgent so he relented. Taking a jet ski to the Chum Dumpster, he met Jared on deck. He didn't have much to say, ushering Charles inside hastily. Silver was inside. He revealed all the assassins they had sent against the Rebel King of Nowhere had been killed (fourteen in total), except for the first group, who had only lost a single member before fleeing. Jared poured them shots of tequila but warned they couldn't get too drunk. Charles didn't heed that advice, drinking his shot immediately.

Jared poured them their second shots (before finishing his first) while Silver advised they couldn't let the alien reach the mainland. They would stop him no matter the cost. Charles asked if King Furry had sanctioned this operation, but the man flippantly said his own father was in charge of the operation, perhaps hinting at the New Red Ribbon Army's treasonous ambitions.

A knock came at the door, startling everyone. Looking out the window, Jared realized who it was and let him in while Charles poured himself another shot. The mysterious man was hooded, though he had burning golden eyes. Jared greeted him, barely hiding his fear. The hooded figure revealed the Rebel King of Nowhere, known as Togarashi, was planning on leaving Akki in three days. If he was allowed to, many would die and the hooded man promised to reveal his organization to the world. Jared wondered how he knew this. The hooded man said Togarashi was waging war not only against humankind, but against his own species as well. He had killed the Dragons of the East and South and had mortally wounded the Dragon of the West (whoever they were). Charles didn't understand what he meant by dragons, having never seen any on the island.

The hooded man explained he was part of an order called the Dragons of the Dawn. Silver didn't want to get into that, shifting the conversation to their plan of destroying Akki with a nuclear bomb as a means to kill Togarashi. He warned the Dragon of the North and any of his remaining allies to relocate to another island immediately. The hooded man said he'd travel to the southern islands in the Crimson Fingers if required. He asked Silver to kill Togarashi for the sake of humanity before leaving.

Charles simmered, thinking about how evil the NRRA was for considering bombing Akki. Drunk as he was, he couldn't allow it to stand. He confronted them about the bomb. Silver said it was necessary while Jared offered him a job in the NRRA after Akki was destroyed. Charles wanted to warn the residents of what was going to happen, but Jared refused. If there was a mass exodus, Togarashi would notice and evade the bomb. Silver refused to let Charles leave, which angered him immensely. Jared wanted him to calm down but he wouldn't.

He threw the tequila bottle at Silver, who dropped like a fish. Jared pinned him against the wall, punching him, but Charles slipped away, begging him not to bomb Akki. Jared said it was the only way, threatening to tie him up if he didn't calm down. Charles refused to listen. Jared attacked him, trying to knock him out with punches. He landed several good blows before Charles pulled a pen out of his pocket and shoved it in Jared's eye.

As Jared fell to the ground screaming, Charles stole his pistol. At that moment, Silver shot at him with his own weapon, causing him to roll behind the couch. He ran to the door, firing blindly. Silver popped up, hitting him in the shoulder. Charles managed to get outside, diving overboard as pain washed over him.

In the fourth scene, Charles fled from Silver, reaching Akki. He ran into Pulang, searching for anyone and finding no one. He eventually found Tights coming out of a shop with an ice cream cone. Seeing him bleeding and shaking, she dropped her cone. Running over to her, Charles pleaded with the woman to tell everyone to leave Akki and that King Furry had ordered the place to be bombed. Just then, Glase reached them. Charles fell over, succumbing to his wounds. She noted she wasn't allowed to kill him even after Alabastian's death. She had been ordered to capture him and reunite him with his daughter. She hit him with the butt of her rifle. Tights ran off as Charles lost consciousness.

In the third scene of chapter 5, Charles had a dream where three bodhisattvas meditated in the shade of a fig tree. There was a demon peeking out from behind it, taking the form of his daughter Violet, which stressed him out. His master Preggu watched him, drinking tea, thinking how immature Charles was. The demon kept asking Charles to come to her, but he refused, thinking it was a trick, a trap, or something evil.

Charles woke up at that moment, seeing Glase, Silver, Eugen, and Cardinal before him. Cardinal was a man he hadn't seen in many years. His anxiety skyrocketed. Charles realized he was strapped to a chair in a windowless room. Glase asked if she could kill him to avenge Jared. Cardinal denied her, saying there were things he needed from Charles. Afterwards, Silver would decide what to do with him.

As his rage built, Charles struggled to maintain eternal compassion for all beings, a core tenet of Buddhism. Cardinal told him that he had captured Violet. She was in another room. He then began to interrogate Charles to see if he'd told King Furry or anyone else about him. Cardinal called him General Indigo, revealing Charles had once been a member of the Red Ribbon Army. Charles was incredulous. Cardinal threatened to kill Violet if he wasn't honest. Charles categorically denied that he'd ever told anyone anything about the Red Ribbon Army. He was furious that Cardinal had even thought he was capable of that.

Cardinal informed him that the Red Ribbon Army had fallen and he was planning on creating a New Red Ribbon Army to take its place. Thus, he was collecting all of the surviving officers to return them to their cause. Glase said they were going to once again attempt to collect the Dragon Balls and take over the world. Charles said he had retired before Commander Red had begun his quest for the Dragon Balls and that he remained retired. He declined to join the NRRA.

Cardinal whistled. The others joined him in leaving the room. Cardinal turned the light off before going, asking Charles to think things over before making his final decision. Charles wondered what had happened to Akki. Cardinal confirmed that someone had killed Togarashi. This didn't stop Charles from labeling the other man a monster. Cardinal promised to take him to see his daughter in the morning before closing the door. In the darkness, the bodhisattvas returned to him and morphed into demons, the one resembling Violet chief amongst them. His anxiety spiked, and he thought to himself that he was not ready to see her again.

In the first scene of chapter 6, Violet and Carmichael ate breakfast inside their prison cells. Just then, the big metal doors opened. Cardinal, Silver, Glase, and Eugen entered. With them were two people bound by their wrists: Charles and Kyofune (whom Violet didn't recognize). She was overcome by negative emotion seeing her father, trying to ignore him as best she could. Eugen and Glase put Kyofune in a cell while Silver brought Charles to the center of the room. Cardinal wasted no time in asking Violet to join the New Red Ribbon Army. When she refused, Silver punched her father in the gut. She didn't expect to feel for him, but it was a visceral reaction. She begged them to stop hurting him. Silver pistol-whipped Charles, asking for Violet to bring an end to things, as he didn't want to do this. She didn't believe him yet refused to change her mind. He continued pummeling Charles. Charles looked to Violet, his watery blue eyes moving her deeply.

She broke, falling in line, telling Cardinal she'd join Silver in his search for Copper. Cardinal informed her that she'd be accompanying Glase and Silver to Seikishi City (a medium-sized town south of West City) to meet with the Morizakura-gumi yakuza group. Since the Chàoxing Gon was leaderless, they could no longer be relied upon to protect Cardinal's shipping routes through Diablo Desert. He needed a new gang to provide muscle. If she behaved, he would allow her to join Silver's search for General Copper afterward. Violet shouted that Eugen had killed Sugoro while she had killed a man in a coma. What he had done was worse. And Violet was justified in what she'd done, as Mazuchiru had killed her boyfriend Nathaniel.

Glase let her out of her cell, warning her not to try anything. Cardinal ordered Eugen to bring Carmichael out of his cell too. He did so, pushing him out with a pistol against the man's back. Cardinal asked Violet to choose one of the other prisoners to live, as he was only willing to house one of them in a cell. In disbelief, Violet cried out, asking him to reconsider by putting them in the same cell. She seethed, thinking to herself how badly she wanted to murder Cardinal. The man would do no such thing. She had to make a choice then and there.

Carmichael fell against Charles for some reason, though Eugen quickly pulled him away. Cardinal warned her that if she didn't make a decision, he'd kill both prisoners. Cardinal prepared to shoot Charles when Violet begged him to kill one of the other prisoners instead. Cardinal had use for them still. He had no use for Charles and Carmichael going forward. Realizing she had to make a decision, Violet reluctantly nodded to Carmichael, whose face had grown pale with fear. He was hurt by Violet choosing him. In the next moment, Cardinal shot him in the face.

Cardinal asked her to supply Eugen with the location of the remaining Children of Chaos. If she didn't, he'd kill Charles too. Unwillingly, she did so. She and her father had a brief moment of recognition, though she couldn't talk to him before she was ushered out of the room, thinking to herself how it had been his fault that she had joined the Red Ribbon Army. He'd abandoned her soon afterward, and for that, she had never forgiven him. Glase pushed her to the door. It was time to visit the Morizakura-gumi. Violet swore to herself that she'd kill them all.

In the second scene, Eugen shoved Charles back in his cell. He had a short exchange with Cardinal before the man left, neither masking their hate for the other. Cardinal told him he had to trust in Violet not to screw up or else he'd die as a consequence. Cardinal left, Charles thinking to himself that he wanted nothing more than to kill him regardless of how that thought aligned with Buddhism.

Buddhism was a failure of a religion, in his mind, if it thought it wrong for evil people such as Cardinal to be punished. Eugen cleaned up Carmichael's body and blood. Charles fingered the capsule in his hand that Carmichael had given him in the previous scene when he had fallen against him. He didn't know what was inside, checking it. There was bubble gum in there. Charles realized it was an explosive, as Violet had used this stuff as long as she'd been in the Red Ribbon Army.

Charles drifted off to sleep, dreaming of his daughter. He was awoken sometime later as Eugen brought him lunch. Charles popped the gum in his mouth, blowing a bubble in front of Eugen. Eugen was incensed, as outside contraband was strictly forbidden. He opened the cell, telling Charles not to try anything or he'd shoot him. As soon as he entered the cell, Charles spit the gum onto his head. Recoiling in disgust, Eugen pulled it off, but it exploded before he realized, killing him instantly.

Charles took his pistol and keys, vomiting from the gore. He ran over to Kyofune's cell, offering to escape with him. The boy was eager to join him. They introduced themselves before running out of the room through a fire escape, making their way outside seconds later.

In the third scene, Tien took on Charles' bounty. As he flew down the roads of Orange Star City, he noticed Kyofune with a bowl of ramen in his hands. Charles was walking behind him. Tien landed before them. At first, Kyofune greeted him, but realizing what was happening, he dropped his ramen bowl and pleaded with the man to spare Charles' life. Tien slapped him aside, preparing to hit Charles with a Dodon Ray. The man ran off and was immediately stopped by Chiaotzu using paralysis on him. Tien released the beam, taking Charles in the throat, killing him. Pedestrians ran away shrieking. Chiaotzu descended from the sky holding up a peace sign. Tien felt the slightest sign of regret as he watched Kyofune flee, tears in his eyes.

Trivia[]

  • The pen Charles kills Alabastian with is the one he confiscated from Tights earlier in chapter 4.
