"Y’know sometimes bad things don’t happen for some magical purpose or to further some cosmic narrative or whatever. Sometimes, bad things just happen, and sometimes people die for no good reason. That’s just the world we live in, Panisa." |
Future Rugula is a major character in The Past and Present, and the future counterpart to Rugula. Panisa's mentor and close friend, Future Rugula left a major impact on her student's life. After losing her new home and many of her friends to the Androids, Rugula grows up to become a hardened warrior. Once she learns she has a terminal illness, however, all of Rugula's deepest regrets and insecurities come to the surface and torment the normally composed warrior. Her friendship with her student Panisa left a profound impact on the girl, and her eventual death left Panisa empty, angry, and desperate for closure.
Appearance[]
Rugula was a tall muscular woman. Like most other Saiyans, she black eyes, and short choppy black hair tied back into a loose ponytail with her signature red bow. She had lightly tanned skin, and had several noticeable scars covering her arms, chest, face, and legs. Her nose was noticeably crooked, due to the Androids badly breaking it years prior. She wore a dirty blue top with ripped sleeves, long red arm bands, large orange pants, a dark blue sash, and black shoes. After becoming bed ridden, she spent the majority of her final days wearing a pale blue hospital gown.
Personality[]
As a child, Rugula was goofy and friendly, though often very lonely and had little confidence in herself. She enjoyed sparring with her friends, but refused to kill others unless absolutely necessary. Though she was immature and often oblivious to the obvious, she was still a kind hearted fearless girl who prioritized protecting her friends over all else. After the deaths of her friends at the hands of the Androids, however, Rugula’s life and personality changed drastically.
Losing her father figure, most of her allies, and her new home in the span of a few months warped the normally loud mouthed Rugula into a hardened and realistic woman. She fully understood that it was impossible to save everyone from the wrath of the Androids, even those closest to her. Though she rarely showed it, Rugula could be violent and aggressive if provoked enough, especially when it came to the Androids.
On the surface, Rugula was often calm, respectful to others, and occasionally playful. She focused much of her life on training and helping others, knowing each day could possibly be her last. Though she took pride in training Panisa, she also encouraged her student to live life to the fullest, and enjoyed spending time with her loved ones. She had a tendency to act sarcastic, but was never too mean to her friends. She was very close to Panisa and Trunks, and treated the two of them as her little siblings. Similarly, she treated Gohan similarly to how she did when they were children.
Underneath this calm exterior, Rugula felt terrible guilt over failing to defeat the Androids. She blamed herself for the destruction of her home and its innocent inhabitants, and fought desperately to try and make things right. Initially Rugula tried to take the news of her terminal illness in stride. The weaker she became, however, the more depressed and angry she felt. Part of her felt her illness was well deserved punishment for failing to protect the planet and letting the Androids kill her friends. This self loathing, paired with her fast approaching death, made Rugula believe she was a hopeless failure. She was deeply afraid of dying a pointless death, believing it would only prove to the world what a failure she thought she was. Her biggest fear, however, was dying before she could teach Panisa everything she needed to know to protect the world.
Despite her fears and insecurities, Rugula was extremely selfless and kind hearted. She took Panisa under her wing and trained her despite her illness, knowing that the world needed a stronger healthier fighter. Above all else, she prioritized protecting humanity, often taking care of survivors whenever she wasn’t training, and helping innocent people escape when the Androids attacked cities. Whenever alone with Gohan, Trunks, or Panisa, Rugula tended to show a more goofy friendly side that was similar to her personality when she was younger. When training together, Rugula was always supportive of Panisa and encouraged her to fight to save her home, rather than her own revenge. She cared deeply for her allies, and made it known everyday to them just how important they were to her.
The closer she came to the end of her life, the more reckless and angry Rugula became, and oftentimes suffered from mood swings. She constantly tried escaping her room to go train, only to be stopped or collapse from the illness. After becoming completely bedridden and realizing how close she was to dying, Rugula reluctantly began to accept her death. While she was still angry over her sickness and regretful over her inability to save her home, Rugula found peace in knowing that the earth would have Gohan and the twins to protect it. During her final days she became much more delirious, frequently apologizing to no one and begging not to be left alone.
History[]
Future Rugula lived the same life as her current day self until the year Age 766, where Goku died from a heart illness, leaving the Z-Warriors without their leader and strongest fighter. Crushed by Goku’s passing, Rugula and many of the other Z-Warriors gradually stop training, with Gohan and Rugula both falling into a deep depression. Several months later, in May 767, Androids 17 and 18 are unleashed on the world, killing almost all the Z-Warriors excluding Rugula and Gohan in a single day. With Piccolo gone, the DB turned to stone and became useless, leaving Gohan and Rugula as the only two capable of stopping the Androids. Under prepared and alone, the two trained night and day to protect what little of humanity there was.
Relationships[]
Future Gohan[]
"You and I both know it won’t be us who save the world, it’ll be those two. Take good care of them for me, ok? And don’t forget, Panisa likes her food spicy, not Trunks." |
Future Gohan was Rugula’s closest friend. After losing their friends and old lives to the Androids, the two trained together almost endlessly. Due to their shared pain and past friendship, the two were extremely close and often confided in each other. Despite the difficult the world they live in, Rugula and Gohan still found time to joke around and be happy together. She also made it clear to Panisa that while she and Gohan were extremely close, their relationship was never a romantic one.
After learning about Rugula’s terminal illness, Gohan acted as emotional support, always encouraging her to take care of herself and never push herself too hard. Unfortunately, due to Rugula’s deep self loathing, his well meaning support became misconstrued as a reminder of her own weaknesses. The two often argued during this time over Rugula overworking herself, though they acted more civil when around Trunks and Panisa. Despite their occasional fights, Gohan and Rugula still deeply cared for each other, and promised to look after the other’s student should one of them die.
After finally becoming bed bound, Rugula finally revealed to Gohan how deeply depressed she felt over her illness, and the two finally reconciled after months of arguing. When not training, Gohan spent almost all of his time with his dying friend. The two often reminisced about the lives they spent together, with both agreeing that in the end, it’ll be the twins who save the Earth and not them.
Future Panisa[]
Rugula looked after Panisa and Trunks when the two were little, and loved them like they were her younger siblings. She often spent time with them when she wasn’t training, and hoped the two would at least have a stable childhood. As they grew older, Rugula felt guilty over not being able to destroy the Androids sooner as it meant Trunks and Panisa would have to fight the murderous duo as well.
Rugula always supported Panisa's decision to work as a doctor in survivor camps instead of becoming a warrior. When Panisa decided to begin training, Rugula took the girl under her wing and taught her everything she could. The student and mentor duo quickly became a powerful team held together by deep mutual respect and trust. Though she tended to tease her outside of training, Rugula never underestimated Panisa’s skill and fully believed she would one day become strong enough to kill the Androids. When not training, the two liked to imagine what they would do with their lives after the Androids were taken care of.
After learning about her illness, Rugula became extremely depressed but continued training with Panisa anyway, knowing the world needed a healthier stronger fighter. Over the next few months, however, Rugula became weaker and weaker. After finally becoming bedridden, she spent the rest of her days being taken care of by her surviving friends, Panisa in particular keeping an almost 24/7 watch on her. During these last weeks, Rugula encouraged Panisa to keep training to defeat the Androids, while also helping her prepare for the inevitable grief that would come with her passing. Though their plans for the future had been dashed, Rugula tried to make the most of the little time she and her student had left together. Before Rugula finally died, Panisa lied that the Androids were no more and that Bulma found a cure for her illness, allowing Rugula a moment of happiness before her death.
Rugula's painful drawn out death left a deep impact on Panisa. Watching her beloved teacher slowly turn into a literal corpse left Panisa deeply angry and desperate for revenge against the monsters who killed Rugula. Despite all the good times they shared, Panisa found it extremely difficult to think about her teacher without becoming furious or upset, muddling all the happy memories they had together causing Panisa to forget why she began training in the first place. It wasn't until meeting her teacher's younger self that Panisa could look back on her time with her teacher in a much more positive light.
