Elijah (イライジャ, Iraija) is a human samurai living in Cardan, a city located three miles south of Orange Star City. He is the daimyō of the Iboinoshishi School, the last samurai school in the world. He was the man who taught Yajirobe. He is a major character in Spindlerun: The Tale of Yajirobe and Down the Well-Worn Road. He is a minor character in Chasing Oblivion and Nineteen Assassins.
Overview[]
Appearance[]
Elijah is a tall man with long, messy black hair and grey eyes. He is relatively skinny for his height, but that's not to say he doesn't have muscles. Due to his training at the Iboinoshishi School, he became one of the strongest humans in the world, and that reflects in his body type. He tends to wear long white robes with black seams and always carries his katana Clearsight on him as well as a wakizashi and a dagger.
Personality[]
Elijah is a calm, deliberate man. He can be awkward when conversing with others, sometimes being harshly direct. He is vastly knowledgeable and sometimes gives long-winded speeches on topics that are important to him or that he is an expert in. Despite being a man who tends to keep his emotions in check, when someone he really respects, such as Jakuto Masamune, insults his pride, he can become quite angry and respond passive-aggressively. He is also a biased man, as seen in Spindlerun: The Tale of Yajirobe when he preferred Brian, a recruit from the countryside like himself over Yajirobe and Harotu, who were recruits from the city. He is harsh in his training. Whenever his recruits complain about how difficult or dangerous a certain exercise is, he simply tells them to leave. He will not engage in arguments with his students. They must either listen to him or leave his school. He has been known to lie in order to deceive people, notably in how he lied to Makare about how Yajirobe and Brian knew the location of Makare's master's grave in order to use Makare as their final test.
History[]
Chasing Oblivion[]
In chapter 5, Yunwu met with Elijah the samurai. He asked her to find out what Makare was doing in Orange Star City in exchange for a 10% stake in Masamune/Masamune. When Yunwu attempted to negotiate for a 20% stake, the samurai offered her 15%, but no more. She continued to negotiate, which Elijah thought was greatly disrespectful, so he got up to leave. Finally, Yunwu relented, and agreed to the 15% stake. Elijah gave her one week to come up with an answer to his question, or their contract would be void.
Spindlerun: The Tale of Yajirobe[]
Elijah attended the first test for the samurai recruits in chapter 1, though he did not make his presence known. He had painted his face and clothes to make himself look like a statue in the room where all the recruits held their pose. He did not move a muscle until they had completed their second test.
Near the end of chapter 1, Kumo returned to the courtyard where the first test had taken place to inform Elijah, who had been maintaining his pose there the entire time, that the boys had retrieved that hat of General Blue, which completed their second test. She told him that it had been Yajirobe who had personally recovered the item. Then, she and Elijah talked about how the previous master of the Iboinoshishi School had let Elijah into the school even though he had been a country boy - the first to be allowed into the school. He ordered her to give him the names and pictures of each of the six recruits so that he could study them. Kumo left immediately to fetch those items.
He then returned to his room, although he did not stay there long. Kumo had left the list of names and pictures in an envelope that she had taped to the Daimyo's door, which he pocketed. Afterwards, he went to the dormitory to look upon the sleeping recruits with his own eyes. They each had a bunk bed, and all of them sans Brian were sleeping on their bottom bunk. Elijah was extremely impressed by them stealing General Blue's hat, as he had not expected them to have been able to accomplish that (thinking they would have either refused the mission or brought back a fake hat), but as he had met General Blue in person before, he knew the hat they had given him was the real one. Because of that, he decided that he would begin personally training them in the morning instead of waiting to do so after allowing Kumo to build up their physical fitness for several weeks.
In chapter 2, Makare told Launch that Elijah, the Daimyo of the Iboinoshishi School, had begun taking in new students. He put out a hit on the students, as well as Elijah, if she could manage it. Launch agreed to try. Later on, after Yajirobe, Brian, Harotu, Anders, Nameless Child 1, and Nameless Child 2 had breakfast, Elijah entered the dining hall of the Iboinoshishi School and everyone went quiet. The daimyo introduced himself and after Brian told him that they were expecting the man to train them, he told them to follow him outside for their first session.
Once outside, Elijah ordered them to show him how skilled they were in the art of sword fighting already. He gave them wooden sticks that had been carved in the likeness of katanas. He told them he could not trust them with real swords yet, which was disappointing to the recruits. After Harotu, Anders, and Nameless Child 1 won their fights, Elijah told them to stop (as Harotu was continuing to pester Brian even after beating him). He called forward the three best duelers in his opinion - Brian, Harotu, and Nameless Child 1. This outraged Anders, for Brian had lost. He challenged the daimyo to a duel to show off how good his sword fighting skills were. Elijah accepted, telling them that he was always obligated to duel when challenged, no matter the competition.
Anders then charged down Elijah with his bokken, but the daimyo jumped over him and then kicked him in the chest with a single toe. The boy dropped to the ground, not even able to scream, and appeared to have been severely wounded. He did not make another sound, but blood flowed from his mouth. At that moment, Elijah's attendants appeared and, in panic, took the boy away on a stretcher. Nobody at the Iboinoshishi School ever saw Anders again. Elijah then told the remaining five recruits that he would not tolerate arrogance from them. He told them that none of them were exceptional yet, or more skilled than he had expected. His training would make them exceptional, but they should not have any false beliefs about their abilities so early into their training. Then, he walked off, their training for that morning having been completed.
The next night, Elijah took his recruits to the crumbling southern bridge in Orange Star City to train. He ordered six attendants to clear some rubble from it before they began. Once his attendants had done so, he dismissed them. Then, he told the children that their task was simple: reach the other end of the bridge without dying. The bridge, with so many holes in it, the gusting winds, and the roads crumbling, was a treacherous obstacle course to navigate. Brian said that he thought they would fall. Harotu told him that it wasn't as bad as it looked, because Elijah would never let them die. The daimyo gave no reply to that. Brian was incredulous, reminding Harotu of the dangerous mission to get General Blue's hat.
Then, having heard enough of their talk, Elijah began the training by leading them across the bridge. Everyone waited a few seconds before following. Harotu, Nameless Child 1, and Nameless Child 2 were the first to begin the obstacle course. When the explosives that Launch had rigged to the bridge went off, Elijah was able to dodge them, though he had to use his real speed to do so. When he got nearly to the end of the bridge, he stopped and waited for his recruits to catch up. Nameless Child 1 was the first to do so. He ran over to Elijah. That was when the bullet Launch had sent towards the daimyo hit Nameless Child 1 instead, ripping through his throat and killing him. He staggered for a few moments before falling through a hole in the bridge to the waters below. Elijah was also hit by the bullet. After it went through the child's neck, it tore through his left upper leg. He was knocked unconscious by hitting his head on the asphalt when he fell over. Yajirobe carried Elijah off the bridge.
In chapter 3, Yajirobe thought that since he had already proved himself twice to Elijah, he expected to have a real sword by now. Brian thought that the reason they were doing low-level training was because the daimyo was still significantly wounded from being shot in the leg. Not long into their training, Elijah appeared and told Yajirobe that he was going to jump-start their training. All of the recruits huddled around the man, but before he could say anything, they demanded to know who had shot Nameless Child 1 and Elijah. He told them it was Makare. He had not expected Makare to attack his recruits and promised the four of them that he would not allow the man to hurt them in the future.
Then, he told them that they were going to do some new training that day and bade them follow him out of the school. The daimyo and his samurai recruits went to Daniel Parroda's vineyard in Cardan where they met Mark, his younger brother. Elijah asked the boy for 157 barrels, for he planned on rolling them down a hill. Elijah paid for the barrels, handing Mark some zeni, and asked the boy to give that to his brother. Mark demanded to watch their training and Elijah agreed.
Then, the daimyo and the recruits tied the barrels together and pulled them through the forest. While they were going, Brian asked Elijah what they were going to be doing with the barrels. He told them that he was going to roll them down a hill at the recruits, forcing them to dodge the barrels. This shocked Brian, who said that they could die if they weren't fast enough. Elijah did not care, stating once more that they could leave his school at any time if the training got too intense for them. He also revealed that this barrel training was the first test his master had given to him at the school.
It took the five of them more than five hours to move all of the barrels to the chosen hill. Mark accompanied them, but did not help, instead incessantly talking to Elijah the whole time, which irritated the recruits. He boasted that he had filled two hundred barrels with wine that day - including the 157 Elijah had bought. The recruits didn't believe him, but Elijah confirmed it. When they finished moving all of the barrels, the sun was setting. Brian asked Elijah how he had completed this test back in the day, and Elijah showed them the seven-star Dragon Ball, stating that he had found that ball as a kid and the master let him use it during his training. None of them, even the daimyo, knew how it was sturdy enough not to shatter against the barrels.
Afterwards, they began their test. Elijah cut some barrels loose and rolled them down the hill at the four recruits, gradually increasing the pace over time. The training session finally came to a close with all four recruits succeeding in never getting hit by the barrels. Elijah was impressed. Walking down the hill with Mark, he asked the boy to tell his brother Daniel that he wanted to meet with him soon, as it had been a long time since they had seen each other. Mark agreed to relay the message.
Later on, Makare ordered Naigo to bring all of their samurai to Igaron mountain, for he planned on using them against Elijah (assuming Launch had lied about killing them) in his future assault of the Iboinoshishi School. Naigo was unconvinced that the low-level samurai would be worth using, as Elijah would be able to kill all of them single-handedly. Nevertheless, he agreed to bring their soldiers to that cave when Makare reminded him that Elijah's pupils would surely die to their men.
In chapter 4, Daniel revealed that his previous story about finding the Dragon Ball on the banks of a river was a lie - it had been in Elijah's parents' house when Daniel had purchased the place. Elijah had requested it, but Daniel had refused to give it to him. Later, Kumo tended to Elijah's gunshot wound. She informed him that the recruits had gone to the city the night before. He had confidence in them returning in ten minute's time, when that day's training was to start. Kumo did not agree. He admitted to her that he needed to accelerate their training, as Makare would likely attack them soon. She and one of the attendants carried the daimyo outside so he could begin his daily meditation. Upon doing so, the three of them noticed that the far-off Orange Star City was burning, with smoke rising high in the air, and that worried Elijah greatly.
When Makare introduced himself to Yajirobe, Brian, and Harotu in Orange Star City, he mentioned that he and Elijah had gone to school together at the Iboinoshishi School. He also disparaged Elijah's leadership, stating that the previous master of the school had been brash to make Elijah his successor. Makare noted that only Elijah and Kumo were capable of wielding a sword and that all other recruits had dropped out, retired, or been removed from the school, which Makare thought was far too strict. He also revealed to them that Elijah had opened the Iboinoshishi School up three times prior, but no recruits had survived or passed all of the tests any of those times.
Makare eventually fought Brian and Yajirobe, for he wanted to kill them himself (Harotu refused to fight). He toyed with them for a while before withdrawing and telling them that he would kill them soon, cursing the luck that they were being let off lightly today. The boys did not understand.
Immediately after, Elijah appeared, attacking Makare in a fearsome display of strength and technical prowess. The two samurai lords traded blows, but Elijah clearly dominated his foe. He kicked Makare into a wall, where he crumpled like a ragdoll. The daimyo demanded that the man stay away from his students. Makare mocked them as being taught by an inferior teacher. Elijah revealed that he knew about the solipsist monks teaching Makare (though it had actually been Naigo who they had taught), calling their philosophy delusional and their ki attacks cheap tricks.
At that moment, Makare pushed Elijah's blade out of his face (cutting his chin in the process) and ran off. Elijah ordered the boys not to pursue him. Then he told the boys that they would begin training with real swords the next morning, as Makare's threats were becoming too difficult to ignore. Harotu asked the daimyo what they were supposed to do about their samurai prisoner. The man attempted to run off, but Yajirobe and Brian stopped him. Elijah threw his knife to them and told them to deal with the threat however they wished. Then, he walked off, returning to the Iboinoshishi School.
At the start of chapter 5, Makare and Naigo prepared to assault the Iboinoshishi School. Naigo believed that having roughly two hundred thirty samurai would be enough to swarm the place, but Makare believed they would need at least seven hundred to overwhelm Elijah, Kumo, the students, and the attendants. When Yajirobe returned to the Iboinoshishi School the next morning after being left in Orange Star City to execute the samurai prisoner, he was greeted by Elijah, Brian, and Harotu. The daimyo explained that he was going to start teaching them how to use a katana, as Makare would be attacking soon. He did not know how long it would take Makare to attack, and so did not know how long their training would go on for. He gave them their newly-forged katanas (each had their name inscribed near the hilt) and then began teaching them how to use the blades.
They learned how to parry first and then were taught the Sabaki defense form. They were told to slice, not to poke with their katanas. Additionally, they were taught slowly at first and taught not to use flashy moves, as patience and energy conservation were more important than looking cool. As days passed, they began noticing the school being surrounded by a large army, for fires were being lit all around them on the surrounding mountainside. At that point, Elijah began teaching the trio offensive moves.
The next morning, the attendants brought the three boys out to the training grounds where they found Kumo and Elijah fully adorned in their armor. The samurai dueled for the students to show them what a real fight looked like. The fight was relatively short, with Elijah winning easily. Afterwards, Yajirobe correctly guessed that Elijah's strategy had been to allow Kumo to wear herself out before going in for the killing blow. Then, Elijah and Yajirobe dueled while Kumo took on Harotu and Brian at the same time. Yajirobe was honored, as no one had dueled with the daimyo since Anders had foolishly attempted to many months prior. Elijah won, but Yajirobe managed to land a single hit, which made him feel proud of himself.
The group continued their intense training session for four more weeks until on one fateful, rainy day, a servant rang the bell at the front gate. Elijah, Kumo, and the students ran to see what was the matter. They beheld a black horse and a rider, who was one of the servants. He was headless. This signaled Makare's attack. As the samurai began marching towards the school, spilling out from the mountainsides, Elijah taught his students one final technique: the Iaigiri (the act of killing someone by running at them, and at the last second drawing the katana from its scabbard and slicing).
Then, he gave the seven-star Dragon Ball to Brian and instructed him and Yajirobe to run to Daniel's house and give it to him as well as tell the man that Elijah no longer required his services. This pissed off Harotu, for he believed that he would have to defend the school by himself. Elijah and Kumo left.
When Yajirobe and Brian returned to the Iboinoshishi School after embarking upon their journey to Daniel's house, they noticed that the samurai had already attacked. Fires were burning, and bodies were lying about. They ran inside to find Kumo and some attendants fighting off the samurai. She ordered one of them to go find Elijah, for he had disappeared, and the other to take her place as she patched up a wound. Yajirobe agreed to do that, while Brian went looking for the daimyo.
Shortly after, as the battle turned in Makare's favor, Makare screamed for Elijah to show himself so that they could duel, but the daimyo did no such thing, prompting Makare to order Naigo to burn down the entire school. Brian found Elijah in his room, meditating. The man seemed doubtful of his abilities and was particularly scared of having to face off against Naigo. Elijah told Brian that Daniel had not gotten to the solipsist monks quick enough, as Naigo had still been able to learn how to control ki blasts. Brian pleaded with him to help. Elijah relented and returned to the courtyard with Brian.
There, they found Makare, Naigo, and Makare's surviving samurai. He demanded to duel with Makare and Makare alone, but the other samurai refused to keep Naigo at bay. Elijah remarked that it had only been their old master who had prevented Elijah from killing Makare in the past. Once more Elijah demanded to duel with Makare, but the other man admitted that he would not win the duel. At that moment, bloody and battered, Yajirobe appeared from behind, his katana in hand. Naigo kicked him aside. Elijah then declared that only Yajirobe and Brian knew where the old master's grave was (an obvious lie), and if Makare killed them, that secret died with them.
Makare was taken aback, for he had loved his old master. He ordered Naigo to take the children prisoner so they could be interrogated. Brian was outraged, but Elijah allowed it to happen. Naigo ordered soldiers to bind both of the children's hands and legs (they had to carry Yajirobe since he had been knocked unconscious) and take them. Then, Makare hit Elijah with the hilt of his katana, but Elijah smiled back at him, refusing to fight. That made Makare irate with anger. He cut Elijah's neck just a little bit, but the daimyo would not stop smiling. Makare left him there in dirt as he and his army retreated to Igaron mountain to interrogate the boys.
In chapter 6, a flashback revealed what happened to Daniel in the previous chapter. In it, he was called up by Makare to discuss some matter in person. He feared that Makare had figured out that it had been him who had killed the solipsist monks. He took out his TACPAD. He could destroy the cave where Makare's Band was staying if he pressed a button, but he did not know if they were still in there or not. He was waiting on a message from Elijah for when to press the button.
Later in the story, while torturing Brian, Naigo claimed that Elijah had killed Makare's master, though there was no way of knowing if that was true. After the cave in Igaron mountain blew up and Yajirobe escaped, he made his way down the mountain and noticed a katana in a tree. He thought it was his until he reached it and saw Brian's name inscribed upon it. Yajirobe realized that Elijah had thought that Brian would survive the encounter with Makare's Band, not him. There was a message attached in which Elijah congratulated Brian, his greatest samurai recruit, for activating Daniel's minefield and killing all of the samurai. He was ordered to come to the daimyo's chambers at once.
Yajirobe did not return until the next day, for his duel with Makare had used up all of his energy. Inside the daimyo's chambers, he found Mark and Elijah. Elijah was lying in bed while Mark applied bandages to his wounds. He told them that he had killed all of the samurai. Elijah congratulated him, but was sad that Brian had not returned. Yajirobe asked if his samurai classes would continue, but the daimyo said they would not, as his school had been nearly destroyed and all of his servants had been killed. Elijah told Yajirobe to go out into the world and make a name for himself. As for him, he would be visiting the Ox-King, his old friend.
He once again congratulated Yajirobe for killing the two most powerful samurai in the world (even though Brian had killed Naigo). Yajirobe did not believe that Makare was stronger than Elijah, but the daimyo was in no state to spar with him, regardless. Then, Yajirobe took his leave. He returned the seven-star Dragon Ball to Elijah. The man thanked him and asked Mark for more water, for if he were going to travel to see the Ox-King, he would need lots of water.
In chapter 7, Yajirobe thought about how his master Elijah had not contacted him in almost four years, which allowed the samurai to officially considered himself a ronin. When Yajirobe returned to the Iboinoshishi School, he noted that Elijah was no longer living there. He wondered if the man was living with the Ox-King. Yajirobe was disappointed that Elijah was gone, as he had hoped to train with his daimyo for the tournament.
Down the Well-Worn Road[]
In this story, Elijah went to see Jakuto Masamune, the man who forged his katana, Clearsight. They reminisced briefly about how Jakuto had forged the sword for Elijah many years ago. Jakuto had been slightly annoyed, after completing it, that his brother Tonji had not cared about that beautiful blade at all. He told Elijah that his katana had been based on a katana that had once been owned by the samurai general Ahakine. The old man also told him that the samurai lords of old were legendary warriors whom Elijah himself would have had no chance against. That annoyed the daimyo.
He revealed to Jakuto that only one of his samurai students had graduated from the Iboinoshishi samurai school, even though the man had forged three blades. He did not want to talk about what had happened, and the swordsmith did not press him on the matter. He instead asked the man if he knew where Makare's katana had gone, reminding him that one of his pupils had killed Makare in a duel in the past, but his sword had disappeared by the time Elijah had gone to see the body. They mused over the fact that Makare had named his blade Chill of Midnight and had stripped it of its ornamentation, which offended them both.
Then, the old man brought up Minamogi, a samurai recruit who had been expelled from the Iboinoshishi School when Makare and Elijah had been recruits there. Afterwards, Minamogi had stolen a katana and captured one of Jakuto's swordsmiths, torturing him for information on how to forge a tamahagane steel katana. Jakuto revealed that Minamogi had still not given up his desire to become a samurai and had been boasting in recent months that he had Makare's blade. As to if that was true or not, Jakuto did not know. The false samurai was holed up in a cave at the base of a mountain due east of the Masamune forge. Jakuto cautioned Elijah not to go there during the day, and instead steal the blade from him at night, because Minamogi had several guards, some of whom used guns.
Nevertheless, Elijah set out for the cave at once, thinking to himself that he would never see Jakuto again. He arrived at the mountain as the sun was setting. Inside, he found two Children of Chaos soldiers, and mistakenly believing they were part of Minamogi's gang, the daimyo snuck up behind them and slit their throats with his katana. Deeper inside, he found Minamogi conversing with Colonel Violet. They were negotiating a price for cocaine, with the false samurai arguing that he should only have to pay Ƶ30,000,000. Violet wanted Ƶ50,000,000. When Minamogi refused to pay more than he had last time, he drew the stolen katana, Chill of Midnight, and pointed it at her.
However, at that moment, Elijah revealed himself to the group. Thinking the man was one of Minamogi's underlings, Violet bolted, fleeing from the cave. Minamogi did not pursue her, as he knew Elijah was a much bigger threat. The daimyo berated the false samurai for stealing Makare's blade and stated that he was surprised to have not seen him in Makare's army when Makare had attacked the Iboinoshishi School two years prior.
Soon, Minamogi and his men surrounded Elijah and attacked. Elijah easily handled Minamogi's lackeys, leaving only Minamogi. Their duel was one-sided; Elijah toyed with the false samurai, cutting his chest multiple times, but not landing a killing blow, only to humiliate and anger the man. Elijah grew weary of their fight, for the way Minamogi used Chill of Midnight was disrespectful to his memories of sparring with Makare in the past. He pressed Minamogi up against the stone wall, kicked his legs out from under him, and made the man drop his katana. Then, Elijah cut the man's hands and stabbed him deep in the chest. Minamogi was not finished, however. He jumped up, grabbed Chill of Midnight with his bleeding hands, and rushed at Elijah once more. The daimyo ducked out of the way and snapped his sword back, cutting off the bandit's head from behind. He picked up Makare's katana and sheathed it, slinging it over his back.
Just at that moment, Violet reappeared and seeing what had happened shot him three times - once in the shoulder, once in the belly, and once in the neck (though that one merely grazed him). She ran off, leaving him to die. As Elijah lay bleeding from bullet wounds, he thought about how Kumo, Makare, Naigo, most of his fellow recruits, and most of his students were dead, and he thought he would be joining them soon. He also thought that Yajirobe was his legacy and likely to be the last samurai in the world. The daimyo almost gave up then, but then his will to live overwhelmed all thoughts and feelings. He stood up, grabbed his and Makare's swords, and stumbled out of the cave.
Nineteen Assassins[]
In the second scene of chapter 5, Tien and Paik visited the Masamune/Masamune estate in Cardan. At the door, they were greeted by Elijah. When they showed him the katana and said they were going to use it to pay for a hit on Hiramogi Higataro, he brought them inside and went to get Mr. Masamune.
A moment later, a man poked his head out of the door Elijah had disappeared into, ushering them to join him. They joined Elijah in a room where Mr. Masamune poured everyone tea. He introduced himself as Tonji Masamune. He was confused about the bounty on Higataro, as he hadn't ordered. Paik explained that someone else had placed it and had given them the katana as payment. Elijah requested to inspect the katana. Paik gave it to him. He read the name on its hilt: Harotu. The Cranes didn't know what that meant. Elijah offered to pay the Ƶ10,000,000 asking price, but would only do so after proof of Higataro's death was shown to him. The Cranes planned to let him keep the blade in the estate while they performed the hit.
They wanted to know the best way to attack Higataro. Elijah revealed that there had been a war between the samurai and yakuza years back, so he knew what to do. He hoped Higataro's death would destabilize the yakuza in the region, who had been hunting samurai down over the past years. Elijah told them the blade they had given him had belonged to one of his students. Back in those time, a rival samurai faction had attacked Elijah's school. After Elijah had prevailed, he had tried to save as many of the surviving samurai and bring them over to his side, though the yakuza had made that difficult by murdering many of them. In present times, only a few dozen remained.
Tien was resolved to kill the yakuza, which Elijah appreciated, though he noted it would not be easy. Higataro had many bodyguards. Paik promised they were up for the task. Elijah told them they could hide in one of Tonji's shipping trucks. It was scheduled to visit Higataro's house two days from then to deliver a shipment of Junmai Genshu sake. There would be fewer yakuza in Higataro's house than at the Goldfish Casino. Elijah promised to text them the address to meet up with the truck. Tonji gave a toast, praying the Cranes would be successful in their mission. The Cranes got to their feet and left, Tien's body thrumming with anticipation.
In the sixth scene of chapter 6, Zhajiang attempted to collect Elijah's bounty. After waking up at the Khaffi train station, he ran to Cardan and found Elijah outside of the Masamune/Masamune estate admiring the blade of his katana in the moonlight. He attacked suddenly with a Denkoken. Elijah dodged it effortlessly, asking if Zhajiang was the one who had been killing all the samurai in the region. Instead of answering, Zhajiang cursed him. Elijah wanted to know who had sent him but Zhajiang refused to answer. He attacked with a Flying Sky Kick. Elijah spun around him, slicing him across the back with his blade. He tried more Denkokens, missing every one.
He conjured up a longer Denkoken, wrapping it around his hand, using that to parry Elijah's katana. It didn't work; Elijah's blade severed his arm. Furiously, Zhajiang jumped at Elijah, pushing him to the ground, punching him relentlessly. He prepared to unleash a Gisakkou attack when the samurai pulled out a second katana (which had belonged to Harotu) and stabbed Zhajiang through the lung. He pinned Zhajiang to the ground, preparing to end him. With his left hand, Zhajiang took the Dragon Ball out of his pocket and hit Elijah across the face with it. The samurai responded by cutting off his arm. Succumbing to his wounds, Zhajiang cried out, trying to get away. Elijah pinned him again, asking once more who had sent him. Zhajiang told him he'd get what was coming to him soon enough. The samurai didn't care. Elijah stabbed him once more through the chest, killing Zhajiang.
Trivia[]
- Elijah is the only character to be featured in every book in the trilogy of loosely-connected novels: Chasing Oblivion, Spindlerun: The Tale of Yajirobe, and Nineteen Assassins.
- Elijah was the person who found and returned the seven-star Dragon Ball to the Ox-King's castle after Ox-King lost it many years prior.
