Dragon Ball GT Kai (ドラゴンボールＧＴ(ジーティー) 改(カイ) , Doragon Bōru Jī Tī Kai, lit. Dragon Ball Grand Tour Revised and abbreviated as DBGTKai) is a remake of Dragon Ball GT in form of fan fiction created by FagnerLSantos. It's first chapter debuted in Nyah! Fanfiction and Spirit Fanfiction on March 31, 2018 and in FanFiction.Net on July 29, 2018. It's last chapter was published on May 21, 2022, finishing the story with a total of 149 chapters. Starting from October 11, 2023, the fanfic was re-released on a 149 day marathon in Wattpad, Inkspired, Fanfics Brasil and Archive of Our Own, finishing on March 06, 2024.

Overview[]

The idea behind Dragon Ball GT Kai was to be a perfect headcanon as a remake of Dragon Ball GT in the canon timeline, being faithful to Akira Toriyama's original style and also fixing the consistency problems of the storyline that the original anime had. Dragon Ball Super events and it's story elements also took part in the timeline of the fan fiction, as the original idea of the author was meant to follow all the series canon, adapting the story to it during and after it's publication if necessary.^[1] This idea was scraped after Akio Iyoku's interview about the timeline placement of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero at the time, rendering the story with some sort of custom timeline due to being already considered the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga on it's timeline during the ongoing publication of the fan fiction.^[2]^[3] Then Dragon Ball GT Kai became a remake of Dragon Ball GT that considered as part of it's timeline Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, the original anime of Dragon Ball Super (Episodes 1 to 131), Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Galatic Patrol Prisoner Saga, with other subsequent arcs being optional for the reader.^[4]

Plot[]

The story take place nine years after the Tournament of Power and five years after the end of Dragon Ball Z. As the veteran characters still have their screen time, it focus mostly on the new generation of warriors, with Uub, the reincarnation of the evil Majin Buu, as protagonist, taking the mantle as the new protector of Earth. Goku, now a true master, still is in the main cast, acting as a mentor to his disciple and his friends in their own journey to become stronger.

Grand Tour Saga[]

It's the adaptation of Black Star Dragon Ball Saga to the fan fiction.
It centers around the discovery of a new set of Dragon Balls and in an adventure on the entire Universe 7 to recover them before the Earth explodes. The group sent for the mission is composed by Uub, Goten, Trunks and Marron, everyone of them with their personal goals and Giru joins they during the travel, where they will find enemies that also want the Black Star Dragon Balls for their own purposes. Various events of this arc turned out to be different and more enjoyable than in the original Dragon Ball GT.

Baby Saga[]

It's the adaptation of Baby Saga to the fan fiction.
It's a direct sequel from the last saga that centers around Baby, a parasite Machine Mutant creature created by the tuffles and his revenge against the saiyans. Both Goku and Pan join the main cast during this arc that was heavily affected by the events of Dragon Ball Super, with a funny subplot involving Zeno and different events involving the havoc caused by Baby on Earth. Vegeta also plays an important role later in this saga, a very different role from the original anime.

It's covered between Chapter 23 to 44.

30th Martial Arts Tournament Saga[]

A much more longer adaptation of the Episode 41 of Dragon Ball GT to the fan fiction.
It's centered in the fights of a special World Martial Arts Tournament with some veteran contestants and first timers. Some characters from previous arcs are present in the tournament and also the saiyans from Universe 6 participate as well. One of the main events of this arc is the construction of the rivalry between Uub and Cabba, much as the likes of the rivalry between their masters.

It's covered between Chapter 45 to 69.

Hell Reborn Saga[]

It's the adaptation of Super 17 Saga to the fan fiction.
It's centered around Dr. Myuu following what happened to him in Grand Tour Saga, he end up in New Namek where he uses the Namekian Dragon Balls to revive the enemies from the past. Among the reborned enemies he found Dr. Gero, a scientist like him that shares the same desire for revenge, they become allies and unite their intelects to create an army of Androids, Machine Mutants and Mutant Androids, starting a well planned invasion on Earth and a total war against the Z Fighters. A lot of battles happen in this arc, with a lot of screen time for veteran characters and at least one individual battle for most of each one of them.

Shadow Dragon Saga[]

It's the adaptation of Shadow Dragon Saga to the fan fiction.
It's centered in the birth of Shadow Dragons from the Earth Dragon Balls due to the accumulated negative energy of so much wishes over the years. The events of Dragon Ball Super changed the concept a little bit as it now envolves the origin of all sets of Dragon Balls and the influence of the Dragon God Zalama, the creator of the Super Dragon Balls. It's an arc with focus in the main cast fighting totally for themselves without the help of the veterans due to the events of the previous saga, it's the arc where they develop their true potential, act as the conclusion of the story and of Dragon Ball overall. This arc also include a subplot in Demon Realm and a crossover with another Toriyama's series.

Reception[]

Up until May, 2024, the story have growing numbers that were over 80.000 views and over 200 comments on Nyah! Fanfiction, over 23.000 views and 400 comments on Spirit Fanfiction and over 29.000 views and 200 comments on FanFiction.Net since it's release.

It was recommended by Papo de Fic's channel in September 14, 2020.^[5]

Trivia[]

The first chapter was published exactly one week after the exhibition of the last episode of Dragon Ball Super original anime (Episode 131) in Japan.
- The story was published weekly every weekend, similar to how the anime originally exhibited it's episodes.
  - During Hell Reborn Saga, the story took some breaks and turned to be published biweekly instead because the intention of the author to stay aligned with Galactic Patrol Prison Saga from Dragon Ball Super manga that was being published at the time.
- The chapter sizes were meant to be around twenty minutes of reading, similar to the lenght of an actual anime episode.
A good part of the story was written in a Nokia Asha 200 cellphone.^[6]
Some events happen at different times than the original Dragon Ball GT.
- The merging of Uub and Buu as a single being happens in Hell Reborn Saga instead of Baby Saga.
- The adaptation of Super Saiyan 4 with a remade concept akin to the canon, called Super Saiyan Simian, first appears in Shadow Dragon Saga instead of Baby Saga.
The story originally was meant to have a full arc in Demon Realm between Hell Reborn Saga and Shadow Dragon Saga, but the author cut it and transformed it into a more short segment for Shadow Dragon Saga due to his burnout while working in the story over the years, his intention was finish it as soon as he could.^[7]
Even with Granola the Survivor Saga and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero didn't affecting the story directly, some concepts of these arcs were actually used in the story, since originally was the intention of the author keep totally aligned with the events of these arcs in a more explicit form.
Due to limitations of the website, Dragon Ball GT Kai was released in two parts on Inkspired. The first encompasses the three first arcs while the second encompasses de last two arcs.
EricYagami's Dragon Universe Series can be considered a sister series to this story, since both authors started to publish their fan fictions at the same period and both had supported each other during the publication of their works.
