Dear Samuel,

I am no longer at the Red Ribbon Army compound. Since graduating officer's school, I have been reassigned to Muscle Tower. It's a major outpost of the army, and it's pretty cool, but it's very cold here. It's been snowing ever since I arrived, so we have not been doing much. The televisions have not been working either. Most of the soldiers just sit around playing cards all day. I tried making a snowman, but the wind blew it over. How are you? How was Christmas? Did you get any cool presents? I won't be returning back to the army's headquarters until May, so I won't get your postcards until then. I hope you are doing well. Stay warm little bro!

Love, Lukas

Dear Lukas,

Christmas was great! Mom invited a lot of people over and we had a big party. There was a lot of dancing and music and mom even made dinner herself. I got a lot of presents from everyone. Dad gave me a new bike to ride to school and mom got me some new video games. When you come home next time we can play together if you want. Aunt Gerda got me a lot of lame clothes. I had to wear them as when she was here, but I took them off as soon as she left! Anyway mom is yelling at me to clean up my room so I have to go now. Please stay safe Lukas.

Sincerely, Sammy

Dear Lukas,

How are you today? I'm doing good. Ms. Havisham complimented my drawings today at school. She said I could grow up to be an artist if I wanted to. I don't know if I should. It doesn't seem like a real job. What do you think, Lukas? How is the army? Are you getting to shoot a lot of guns and see a lot of new places? Have you made any new friends? I asked mom if you could come home for my birthday this year but she didn't seem to hear me. I'll ask her again when she's in a better mood. She's been staying late at work a lot and I have been riding my bike home from school. She used to pick me up, but I think she's too tired now. She yells a lot too. I'm not sure what is going on. What do you think? Write me back when you can, big brother.

Sincerely, Sammy

Dear Mother,

Samuel wrote to me a few months ago, and he mentioned that you were no longer picking him up from school. I am concerned, because the middle school was almost six miles from our house, and he would have to ride through a few bad neighborhoods going each way. And he could get hit by a hovercar, too. Is it too much for you to pick up your son from school? I am worried for his safety. Please remember, he's only 11 years old.

Lukas,

I am working two jobs currently to pay for your father's medical expenses. I do not have the time to take Sam to school. Sam has been riding his bike to school for almost half a year now and nothing bad has happened to him. I have endured your shame long enough; I do not need you to now lecture me on how to be a parent. Now that you are a big man in the Red Ribbon Army, you should worry about your own safety. It must be a big burden sitting around playing cards in the snow all day. And if you ever do die out there, don't expect me to pay for your funeral. My funds are stretched enough as it is. Do not write to me again unless you have something important to say.

Dear Samuel,

Hey bro. I hope you're doing well. I've been promoted to First Lieutenant and been given a small group of soldiers to command. We have been practicing training exercises and testing out a lot of weapons recently. I even got to fire a bazooka! It was so intense, I fell over after shooting it! It is pretty wild being in control of these soldiers. I feel so powerful. It's so crazy. Anyway, I am about to set off on a top secret mission. When I come back, General White is going to give me a few weeks off. I think I'll come home for a few days so you can show me all those games you got last Christmas. If you have any of your drawings, I would love to see those too. I always tried to draw when I was your age, but I was never any good. If you want to become a real artist, you should practice everyday. That's what my teacher always told me, but I was too lazy to do it. Anyway, I hope you are doing well and having fun in school. Also Sammy, please tell mother that I will be sending her my paycheck every month to help out with what dad's going through.

Lukas,

I do not need your charity, Lukas. I am managing fine on my own. Please do not send me further checks. It is unseemly and and unnecessary.

Dear Lukas,

I can't wait to see you come home! I have so much to show you. I'm going to Sky World tomorrow. I'm finally old enough to ride the Boomerang. Remember when we went a few years back and you nearly threw up when you came off that ride? I can't wait to ride it. All my friends are coming too. We'll record the whole thing so you can watch it later if you want. I hope you are having as much fun as I am right now. See you later, Lukas!
