Dear Samuel,

By now, Mother must have told you that I have left home to join the Red Ribbon Army. I'm sorry I never got to say goodbye to you. Hopefully, I will be able to come to your school graduation later this year. That should happen, as long as my drill instructor gives me a few days off. I'm pretty sure he will. Anyway, I hope you are doing well, little brother, and remember to keep trying hard in school so you can grow up to be successful one day.

Love, Lukas

Dear Lukas,

Mom told me you left home but she didn't seem very happy about it… But why did you want to join the Army? It's pretty cool, but you could get hurt. Are there lots of tanks and shiny guns? Mom said I shouldn't join any army. My teacher wants me to be a doctor when I grow up because I am the best student in the class. I don't know about that. It seems kinda boring. I would be very happy if you came to my graduation but please don't laugh at the robes I have to wear. They are so lame… but Mom bought them so I have to wear them.

Sincerely, Sammy

Dear Mother,

I have been accepted into the Red Ribbon Army's boot camp! I am very excited! The camp lasts for 8 weeks. Afterwards, I think I want to enter the army's officer course, which would be for another 12 weeks. After that, I will be an officer. Then I can come home and visit whenever I want. I hope you and father are doing well. I still have not spoken to my drill instructor about getting some time off to attend Samuel's graduation. If you could write back and give me the date of that, I would be very grateful. Anyways, I have to go scrub the latrines now, so I will be waiting for your postcard.

Dear Lukas,

I have not yet told your father or younger brother about why you left us, and I think it should stay that way. For your brother's sake, it would be better if you did not come to his graduation. I don't want him to pick up any habits or god knows what else from you and those boys you have been with. Please just continue your training in that boot camp and stop contacting us, Lukas. I'm trying to raise a normal family here, and I don't need you spoiling that. You have embarrassed me enough already.

Dear Samuel,

Hey bro. Unfortunately, I have some bad news. My commanding officer won't let me have a few days off to come and visit you graduate from fifth grade. I really tried to get leave for your ceremony, but nothing I said changed his mind. Anyways, I hope you are doing well little bro and I expect to be home to see you, mother, and father, when my 8 week course is over. Remember to do your homework and eat your vegetables so you can grow big and strong like me!

Dear Samuel,

Hi Sammy. Academy's been pretty intense. They have been showing us how to shoot rifles today. We got to see the big man - General White. He looked like a polar bear! I was so scared when he was around. I didn't want to mess up or miss my targets. But all went well and I have a few hours until my next training. I hope you are doing well, and congratulations on completing the fifth grade! My little bro's a middleschooler now! I can't believe it. I'm so proud of you.

Dear Samuel,

Sorry for not writing you in a while. Life has been wild! I finished boot camp and now I'm an official Red Ribbon Army soldier! I'll be coming home this weekend, and you can see my new army suit and my rifle! I've been waiting so long to show you all my stuff. It'll be so nice to take a break from running training exercises to come home and see what you have been up to since I left. Anyways, I have got to pack up for my trip home, so I hope you are doing well and stay safe, little bro.

Love, Lukas

Dear Samuel,

Hello Samuel. It's been a while since I've sent you one of these, so I figured I would let you know how things are going here. I'm doing well. Officer academy is going well. I like it much better than boot camp. No mud and getting dirty! I made a new friend. His name's Dark. It's kind of a weird name, I think. Everyone around here just calls me Blue. No first names. It's strange, but I've been getting used to it. Anyway, in one week, I'll graduate the Red Ribbon Officer's Academy and become a second Lieutenant. It's gonna be sweet! I hope you are doing well, Sammy. How's middle school? Have you made lots of new friends? Write me back when you get the chance.

Love, Lukas

Dear Lukas,

I only got your letter the other day. Mom was hiding it from me. I don't know why. School's been okay. I have a few friends, but most of them are the same from last year. The seventh graders have been kind of mean to us, and they are so tall! I can't believe they are in the same school as us. I asked mom if you could come home for Christmastime but she just yelled at me like she yelled at you when you came home in August. I think she doesn't want you to come, but it's okay. I'm sure you can come home next year. Please keep sending letters, Lukas. I miss you a lot.

Sincerely, Sammy
