— Akemi in "Seven Years Later! Starting Today, Gohan is a High School Student"
Akemi (あけみ Akemī) is a female Saiyan, the daughter of Vocado, granddaughter of King Vegeta, niece of Vegeta and Tarble, and mother of Karasuma. Akemi is close friends with Gohan since childhood. Being the only child of the Saiyan king, she is first in the line of succession to inherit the throne ahead of her uncle.
Appearance[]
Akemi's physical appearance changes throughout Dragon Ball Z, due to the fact that the series starts out with her as a child and ends when she is fully grown and with a child of her own. But Akemi's appearance remains relatively the same. According to Vocado, Akemi's facial features greatly resembles that of her mother. She has pale skin complextion, waist-length black hair and black eyes.
When Akemi is first introduced, she initially wore an RIT-issued Saiyan battle armor with the red Vegeta Royal Family Crest on the left side of her breastplate, white boots and black kneepads.
As a teenager, Akemi has been noted by others to be very beautiful. She is tall for her age with a slender frame yet athletic physique. Her expressions are much more stern, serious, and sometimes cocky.
Personality[]
In her early childhood during the Saiyan and Frieza Sagas, Akemi is portrayed as a bright, curious, and remarkably self-aware child. While conscious of her royal status, she prioritizes her burgeoning friendship with Gohan above all else. She is playful and energetic, often instigating games and lighthearted competitions, but even at this young age, the shadow of her father's strict tutelage is evident. She approaches her early training with a focus that contrasts sharply with Gohan's more sheltered and academically-inclined upbringing. This period establishes her as a crucial bridge between cultures; she understands the warrior's drive inherent in her bloodline but is being actively shaped by the kindness and normalcy of her life on Earth.
During the Cell Saga, Akemi's personality solidifies into a more defined duality. Her years of rigorous training have molded her into a serious, focused, and pragmatic warrior. Her interactions with Gohan evolve into a playful but intense rivalry. Her teasing about his nerdy, academic pursuits is not malicious but rather a sign of their deep, sibling-like bond and her own way of trying to draw out the warrior she knows is inside him. She often expresses a quiet frustration with his reluctance to fight, not because she is bloodthirsty, but because her father has drilled into her the absolute necessity of power for the sake of protection. Her stern expressions and focused gaze during this time reflect the immense weight of her lineage and the expectation to be strong enough to one day lead her people.
As a young adult, Akemi matures into a mature and seasoned warrior. Upon returning to Earth after her military service, she enrolls in Orange Star High School as part of a cultural exchange program, where her initial rivalry with Videl is fierce—a clash of two proud, strong-willed young women. However, their rivalry gradually blossoms into mutual respect and a deep, sister-like friendship. This period highlights her dual nature: she can be a normal high school student one moment and a powerful Saiyan princess the next. During the conflict with Majin Buu, Gohan is left vulnerable to a devastating attack, Akemi acts without a shred of hesitation. The Saiyan instinct for self-preservation is completely overridden by the Earthling value of self-sacrifice: using her full power as a Super Saiyan 2, not to attack, but to form an impenetrable shield, absorbing the full, catastrophic force of the blast to protect Gohan. The act leaves her critically injured and near death, but it cements her identity.
By the end of Dragon Ball Z, after the birth of her son, Karasuma, a new, profound layer is added to her personality. A quiet, maternal warmth softens Akemi's stern gaze, and a fierce, unspoken protectiveness becomes her new driving force. Her expressed hope for Karasuma and Pan to become close friends symbolizes her desire for a future where the next generation can live in peace, a future she fought and nearly died for.
In Dragon Ball Super, As a mature adult and mother, Akemi's personality has settled into a graceful balance of royal authority and maternal warmth. She is a respected stateswoman among the Dragon Team, often providing a calm, strategic perspective that mediates her father's cold stoicism and her uncle's hot-headed pride. During the Tournament of Power, her Saiyan heritage comes to the fore. She treats the Universe 6 Saiyan, Caulifla, with a distinct condescension, viewing her as an "insolent kid" who represents raw, undisciplined power—a stage of development Akemi herself has long since surpassed. Her vow to show Kefla "the true power of Universe 7 Saiyans" is a declaration of pride not just for herself, but for the refined strength and disciplined mastery her lineage represents. The most significant and terrifying evolution of her personality occurs during the Super Hero Saga. When she witnesses her son, Karasuma, being critically injured by Cell Max, her years of discipline, her royal composure, and her controlled demeanor do not just crack—they are obliterated. There is a moment of chilling silence as shock gives way to horror, and then to an all-consuming rage. The scream that follows is not just a cry of grief; it is the sound of a fundamental part of her psyche breaking. In her Inverse form, her personality is gone, replaced by a singular, predatory instinct. There are no taunts, no strategy, no words—just pure, silent, and absolute annihilation directed at the creature that harmed her child. This event reveals that beneath the composed princess lies the raw, terrifying, and boundless fury of a Saiyan mother, which is ultimately the true source of her greatest power.

Power[]
As the crown princess of the Saiyans and the daughter of King Vocado, Akemi possesses an immense level of power and a latent potential that rivals the strongest warriors in Universe 7. Her power is defined by a unique combination of her royal Saiyan bloodline, the potential unlocking she received as a child, and a disciplined, tactical approach to combat honed through both her father's harsh training and her Earthling upbringing. Unlike many Saiyans who rely solely on raw power, Akemi has mastered advanced ki manipulation techniques, making her an exceptionally versatile and dangerous fighter. Her power grows continuously, and she has demonstrated the ability to repeatedly break her own limits, culminating in transformations that allow her to challenge even those wielding the power of Gods.
- Manga and Anime
Akemi's journey of power began as a child on Planet Namek when Grand Elder Guru unlocked her latent potential. This ritual did more than just provide a simple boost; it created a unique synergy with her royal Saiyan genetics. As Vegeta later noted, this caused her Saiyan Power to become hyper-efficient, allowing her to gain significantly more strength from recovering from injuries and enduring battles than a typical Saiyan warrior. This foundational enhancement set her on a path of accelerated growth that would define her future as a fighter.
During the lead-up to the Cell Games, Akemi entered the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with her father. There, she achieved the Super Saiyan transformation, but her method was a testament to her disciplined nature. Instead of relying on a burst of rage like Goku or Vegeta, she used a controlled, meditative approach, concentrating her ki between her shoulder blades until the power overflowed and triggered the change. This demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of ki control far beyond her years.
In the seven years that followed, Akemi's power continued to grow exponentially during her service in the Saiyan Army, where she attained the Super Saiyan 2 transformation. Her mastery of this form was put on full display during her exhibition match against Gohan at the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament. The two childhood friends, both in their Super Saiyan 2 states, clashed in a dazzling display of power that shook the arena, fighting as true equals. Later, when Majin Buu was released, her selfless nature was put to the ultimate test. To protect a vulnerable Gohan from a devastating attack, Akemi unleashed all her power in a sacrificial defensive maneuver, absorbing the full force of the blast. The act left her critically injured and on the brink of death, but she survived. In the aftermath of the battle against Buu, recognizing the need for even greater power to protect their world, her father, Vocado, performed a long-forgotten and excruciatingly painful ancient Saiyan ritual to fully unleash her latent abilities. This ritual, involving a body modification technique, granted her the Ultimate form. In this state, her power skyrocketed to a level that vastly surpassed Super Saiyan 3, allowing her to single-handedly fend off Super Buu after he had absorbed Gotenks—a foe that had utterly defeated Super Saiyan 3 Goku. This form also awakened her Precognitive Intuition, a heightened form of ki perception that allowed her to sense and anticipate her opponents' moves.
Through continuous training, Akemi pushed her Ultimate state even further into a level known as Advanced Ultimate. This state elevated her power to a level comparable to a Super Saiyan God, achieved entirely through her own mortal ki. The sheer scale of this power was demonstrated in a sparring match against her father; her energy was so staggering that she pushed the God of Destruction candidate back, forcing him to transform into Super Saiyan Blue to finally overwhelm her. During the Tournament of Power, she was a key warrior for Team Universe 7, handily defeating Caulifla and later battling the fused warrior Kefla to a standstill, showcasing the superior power and technique of a Universe 7 royal Saiyan. Later, as a temporarily deputized member of the Galactic Patrol, her mastery of Spirit Control proved invaluable in the war against the energy-absorbing Moro.
Akemi's greatest power, however, was ultimately unleashed through overwhelming emotion. During the battle against the monstrous Cell Max, she witnessed her son, Karasuma, being critically injured and believed him to be dead. The resulting explosion of grief and maternal rage triggered a primal evolution of her Ultimate state, transforming her into Inverse Akemi. This rage-fueled form, comparable in nature to Gohan's Beast form, granted her an absolute level of power. The power surge was immediate and terrifying; she effortlessly withstood a full-power punch from the giant Cell Max without flinching and then casually flicked him away as if he were an insect. The true measure of this form's might was shown when she was able to go toe-to-toe with her father King Vocado's own divine transformations, Ultra Ego and Ultra Instinct, respectively. This proves that when fueled by her deepest protective instincts, Akemi's power can erupt to a level that transcends the boundaries of mortals and allows her to directly challenge the power of the gods themselves.
Abilities[]
- Flight – The ability to fly with the use of ki.
- Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave.
- Ki Sense – The ability that allows the user to sense ki and power levels.
- Saiyan Power – A genetic trait that continually lets a Saiyan increase in performance against adversity, either by recovering from great injuries or enduring great struggle in battle.
- Ki Suppression Mastery – Akemi could further master the art of ki suppression, making it nearly impossible for others to sense her power level.
- Afterimage Technique – This technique is a short burst of high speed movement, moving much faster than the opponent can sense. This has the side effect of leaving a momentary "after image", until the opponent's senses adapt and realize their target has moved.
- Royal Rush – A devastating combination of her martial arts skill and speed. Akemi disappears in a burst of speed using the Afterimage Technique, then reappears right in front of her opponent to deliver a rapid-fire succession of pressure point attacks. The flurry of strikes culminates in a single, powerful Headshot, knocking the opponent away before they can react.
- Pressure Point Attack – Akemi is highly proficient in using Pressure Point Attacks to stun, incapacitate, and in some cases, kill her opponents.
- Energy Blade – Akemi channels her ki to her hand by flattening it out with all fingers next to each other leaving no gaps between them and creates a thin beam of dimensional energy.
- Stand Your Ground! – A highly versatile technique which affords both offensive and defensive capabilities whereby Akemi emits a constant stream of ki from her palms, which are formed into extremely thin, sharp, flexible blades.
- Reflection Shield – By using a variation of her "Stand Your Ground!" technique, Akemi can create a spherical barrier of interlocking energy blades. This shield is not for blocking attacks, but for actively redirecting them. Any energy blast that makes contact with the shield is not absorbed, but rather sent back at the attacker with double the force and speed. The shield can also be expanded outward in a flash to push back multiple attackers.
- Spirit Control – an advanced Ki manipulation technique known primarily to the Yardrat race, taught to her by Vocado. Spirit Control allows its user to achieve a multitude of potent abilities through their ki, including Healing (an advanced ability) and Forced Spirit Fission (an extremely advanced ability). These abilities achieved through Spirit Control are used by shifting, splitting and growing the user's spirit. Achieving good Spirit Control allows the user to sense ki from a much greater distance and utilize their energy to attack much more efficiently, though at first this newfound ability to use their ki properly causes the power to be somewhat uncontrollable; this was demonstrated by Vegeta, who tried to use a simple finger beam but ended up firing off a powerful energy wave.
- Healing – Akemi on few occassions demonstrated healing powers in her Ultimate and Inverse transformations. However, it may simply be that Akemi gave her target some of her energy to heal their injuries or resuscitate them.
- Forced Spirit Fission – An advanced Spirit Control ability taught to her by Vocado allows Akemi to separate and manipulate energy from their target, granting them the ability to do things such as undo Fusion or Absorption techniques and free trapped souls. This technique is also shown to be able to indirectly revive some of the dead. In order for the technique to be effective, the user must inflict damage upon their target. The technique can be used from a distance, or can be used on an opponent by hitting them with physical blows. Since the principle revolves around splitting energy and then manipulating it further, it can be used in the opposite way. She first uses this ability during a sparring match against Gotenks, the fusion of Trunks and Goten, following Kid Buu's defeat.
- Spirit Binding – A unique application of her Spirit Control ability. Akemi can use her ki to directly influence and bind her opponent's own energy. By disrupting their ki flow, she can temporarily paralyze them, suppress their power, or even cause intense pain. Unlike Forced Spirit Fission, which separates energy, this technique is more about control and disruption, making it a valuable tool for non-lethal subdual.
- Inverse Flash – An extremely powerful technique that leverages her mastery of Spirit Control and her healing capabilities. Akemi can implant a small, imperceptible piece of her ki into a target. When she later activates the Inverse Flash, the tagged ki is supercharged and detonates, reversing the target's physical regeneration and causing old wounds to reopen.
- Kiai – An invisible wave of ki that Akemi emits from her palm.
- Headshot – A physical technique where Akemi knocks her opponent away with a simple finger flick to the forehead.
- Ghost Fist – A close-range, martial arts technique that builds on her use of pressure points. Akemi delivers a rapid-fire sequence of blows with suppressed ki. Instead of immediately causing damage, the energy from these strikes builds up inside the opponent's body. With a final, decisive Kiai, she unleashes all the stored energy at once, causing massive internal damage. The name comes from the fact that the opponent feels the initial taps but not the full impact until it's too late.
- Royal Rebuke (Ōjōno Sekkai) – This name highlights Akemi's position as a princess of the Saiyan royal family. A "rebuke" is a sharp expression of disapproval or criticism. When paired with "royal," it suggests a powerful, dismissive strike delivered to an inferior. Akemi would deliver this open-handed slap with a dismissive, almost lazy motion, but imbued with a powerful, focused burst of ki. It would feel incredibly demeaning to the target, as if they are not even worthy of a proper punch. While seemingly casual, the attack would carry immense force, knocking opponents off their feet with a jarring, humiliating impact. This technique showcases Akemi's condescending side and her ability to assert dominance without expending great effort. It perfectly fits her character, who is serious and intuitive yet also prone to arrogant behavior, especially towards those she considers weaker. The Royal Rebuke would be used not just for damage, but to assert her superiority and belittle her opponent, echoing the prideful Saiyan tendencies of her uncle, Vegeta.
- Full Power Energy Wave – A powerful energy wave fired from her right hand.
- Final Shine Attack – Vocado's signature technique, which Akemi learned by practicing in secret after having watched her father utilize it twice.
- Final Shine Barrage – A fusion of her learned Final Shine Attack and her agile fighting style. Akemi can fire a series of smaller, but very fast and highly maneuverable Final Shine bursts. This allows her to create a wide-area assault or overwhelm a single opponent with a torrent of powerful blasts, making it much more versatile than the single, full-power Final Shine.
- Heart-Shatter Palm (Shinzōha) – This ki-enhanced melee technique is a deadly evolution of Akemi's pressure point attacks. Using her precise ki and bodily control, she can deliver a focused palm strike that, when applied with enough force, can potentially stop an opponent's heart by disrupting its rhythm. The attack's lethal effect lies in its subtlety; a seemingly ordinary strike becomes a lethal blow designed to target and overload the heart with a burst of concentrated ki. The Heart-Shatter Palm exemplifies Akemi's transition from raw power to refined martial art mastery. While her Saiyan strength provides the force, her control, honed through Spirit Control and her disciplined upbringing, provides the lethal precision. This technique is not for casually powerful opponents but rather for targets with high durability, where brute strength would be ineffective. Its subtle, internal devastation reflects her strategic and often cold approach to combat, highlighting her ability to end a fight efficiently and lethally when necessary.
- Primal Power Boost – Akemi, fueled by rage and maternal instinct in her Inverse form, grants a massive power increase, placing her on a level comparable to Gohan's Beast form. This is a unique path to power that is distinct from the more controlled, trained ascensions.
- Instinctual Combat – In this state, Akemi's senses and perception are heightened to a primal, instinctual level, allowing her to predict and counter her opponent's moves with greater accuracy. This is similar to the Saiyan Power trait but is amplified by her Inverse form's primal nature.
- Precognitive Intuition – An advanced form of ki perception, Akemi's Precognitive Intuition awakens with her Ultimate form during the Buu Saga, providing a heightened awareness of impending danger. This ability functions as a mental radar, allowing her to sense an opponent's intent and potentially perceive fleeting glimpses of future events. By anticipating moves before they are made, Akemi becomes a much more formidable and strategic fighter, demonstrating a refined application of her power.
Unlock Potential
- Main article: Unlock Potential
This power-up is a foundational and long-lasting enhancement for Akemi. Unlike a temporary form, it permanently taps into her hidden reserves of power. The Namekian Grand Elder Guru's ritual, mirroring the power-up received by Gohan and Krillin, sets her on a path of accelerated growth during the Namek Saga. Her abilities were enhanced along with the strength of her hidden power, and as a side effect, continuously grew with each battle, as stated by her uncle Vegeta. The first time that she receives this power-up roughly multiplies her power tenfold, allowing her to access a power in around the mid-10,000s range, though with the subsequent battles against Recoome and Frieza, she grows many times stronger. This could mean her "Zenkai Boosts" (Saiyan Power) were enhanced by Guru's intervention, making her growth rate even faster than a typical Saiyan warrior. This initial boost and continuous growth make her a formidable force even before she attains the Super Saiyan transformation.
Super Saiyan
- Main article: Super Saiyan
Akemi first attained this transformation while training with her father Vocado in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber during the Cell Saga. Her attainment of Super Saiyan is unique because it's achieved through a focused, controlled, and disciplined method, almost meditative approach to unlocking the transformation rather than a pure emotional trigger. Concentrating her energy between her shoulder blades suggests a deeper understanding of ki control than was shown by other initial Super Saiyan transformations.
Super Saiyan 2
- Main article: Super Saiyan 2
Attaining Super Saiyan 2 during her military service after Cell's defeat indicates Akemi's continued commitment to training and her growth as a warrior. In this form, her hair completely spikes up, standing above her shoulders much like Gohan's in his Super Saiyan 2 form as a child against Cell, and three bangs appear, similar to Goku's Super Saiyan 2 form. She also gains electricity in the aura surrounding her body in this form.
Seven years later, Akemi is first seen in this form when she fights against Gohan during the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, only to have Shin paralyze them so that Gohan's power may be drained (and subsequently returned, by Kibito) as to lure out Spopovich and Yamu, and lead them towards Babidi's spaceship. She also fights Majin Buu in this form alongside Gohan, but loses and is nearly killed.
Ultimate
- Main article: Ultimate and Old Kai's Unlock Ability
This power-up is a significant milestone, representing a complete unleashing of Akemi's latent abilities. The fact that her father, Vocado, performed a long-forgotten but excruciatingly painful ancient Saiyan ritual to access this power, involving a body modification technique, a unique and possibly darker method compared to the Old Kai's ritual for Gohan. The subtle changes to her appearance (sterner eyes, larger white aura) indicate a deeper, more profound transformation of her being. She is also known as the Warrior Maiden in this state. The description of her Ultimate form being more powerful than Super Saiyan 3 and matching Ultimate Gohan highlights her continued evolution alongside her best friend. Her ability to fend off Super Buu (Gotenks absorbed) and her enhanced instincts and perception show the form's immense power and versatility. The minimal ki depletion further showcases her advanced mastery of ki control.
Initially, Akemi is much stronger than the likes of Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks and Super Buu (Piccolo absorbed) and was able to put up an even fight against Super Buu (Gotenks absorbed) alongside Gohan. Eventually Akemi attained full mastery of this form five years later and grew stronger through intense training. However, by the time Frieza resurfaced, she proved to be hypothetically on par with the intergalactic tyrant in his Final Form. In anticipation of the Tournament of Power, Vocado tests her by fighting as a Super Saiyan 2 and even further as a Super Saiyan God but was actually pushed back and only defeated Akemi once he further amplified his power by becoming a Super Saiyan Blue.
When Akemi used her Ultimate form against Vocado, her father questioned why she did not utilize Super Saiyan on top of it, to which Akemi responded by stating that she was aiming for an ultimate form on her own terms.
Advanced Ultimate
- Main article: Advanced Ultimate
This form represents Akemi's continued pursuit of strength beyond even the standard Ultimate state. By powering up further within her Ultimate state, she is able to match the power of a Super Saiyan God. The fact that her father, a formidable warrior, is pushed back by her power and has to use Super Saiyan Blue to defeat her shows the staggering level of strength she has achieved through hard work and training.
