Overview[]

Summary[]

Over two hundred years after the havoc wreaked by Majin Buu, Earth has enjoyed a long process of becoming a world of martial artists and masters of ki. In Age 991, the 97th Tenkaichi Budokai is scheduled to be held on May 7th, and all of Earth's most fearsome warriors are soon to gather to compete for the title of "Strongest Under the Heavens". This saga primarily highlights the path to power of a few young warriors including Jodenku, a twelve-year-old prodigy under the influence of an assassin overlord named Tachizo the Brave, Sei-Sen, a top student of the Wolf Style Dojo led by Master Renji, and Kenju Zu, the top ranked combatant of the Crane Style Dojo. The first 8 episodes are dedicated to these characters during their training in the months preceding the tournament, introducing characters such as Brassiere Briefs, the daughter of the president of Capsule Corporation and Sei-Sen's best friend, and many other minor characters and antagonists that they must defeat to reach their goals of strength before the tournament arrives. During these episodes, Sei-Sen travels with Master Renji to train on Dende's Lookout, where she is briefly mentored by an elderly Piccolo.

The Wolf Style Dojo, formed centuries ago by a martial artist by the name of Yamcha, is the least recognized of the three major schools of martial arts; the Turtle, Crane, and Wolf. Sei-Sen's adventures and constant battling against bandits got her a contract offer to take out Tachizo the Broken, a deadly assassin, and his right-hand prodigy, the twelve-year-old martial artist known as Jodenku. Sei-Sen traveled along with Master Renji and a few cops accompanying them along the journey, but they stood no chance and were put down. However, Tachizo the Broken chose to spare them, leaving with Jodenku. This incident is what caused Tachizo the Broken to compete in the upcoming Tenkaichi Budokai along with his student. Another portion of these early episodes follows Kenju Zu and his life as a famous martial artist, participating in other small tournaments and traveling alongside his mentor, Master Kashi, and learning about the other prodigies. The day of the Tenkaichi Budokai finally arrives in episode 9.

Along with martial artists of the Turtle School, the 97th Tenkaichi Budokai is one for the records, being filled with rivalries and narratives as well as battles that shake the Earth. Jodenku and Kenju Zu are immediately engaged in a rivalry after their bout in the preliminaries got violent enough to nearly get both contestants disqualified, and Sei-Sen seemed to sympathize with Jodenku after seeing how his mentor treated him while waiting for the tournament to begin, despite their previous confrontation just a few weeks prior. After a long tournament with many electrifying battles between Earth's greatest, the final is contested between Jodenku and Kenju Zu, with Kenju Zu having a majority of the fan support due to Jodenku's infamy for his reputation as an assassin.

Both fighters were gravely injured, and Kenju Zu managed to narrowly squeeze out a victory, being declared "Strongest Under the Heavens" for the 97th Tenkaichi Budokai. Although losing out on his ultimate goal, Jodenku has been awakened to Tachizo the Broken's horrible influence on his life throughout the events of the tournament, declaring himself independent in front of everyone in the contestant room in the aftermath of the tournament's celebrations. Tachizo the Broken attempted to attack Jodenku, but it was to no avail as his student had surpassed him long ago. With a broken nose and an angry expression on his face, Tachizo left the island with the promise to one day get revenge on Jodenku. Now alone, Jodenku leaves the celebrations early and retreats into the wilderness.

A few days after the tournament, Jodenku encounters Sei-Sen in the wilderness, with the two sharing venison on a stick over a campfire from a deer that Jodenku had hunted a few minutes prior. Sei-Sen told Jodenku that her master, Master Renji of the Wolf Style Dojo, was impressed at Jodenku's performance and said that with proper training and form, he would be unstoppable and wished to see him one day for training. Jodenku refused at first as he had trauma from his previous mentor in Tachizo the Broken, but after a long and heartfelt conversation, Sei-Sen managed to convince Jodenku to enter the Wolf Style Dojo, beginning his new path to power under the guidance of a legendary martial artist and alongside others around his age, including a young boy named Hoshi who enters the dojo a few days after him.
